If they dont raise the water level thats going to kill a lot of fish...

I am not a canal guy, never fished it, never been on it. I have often wonder, where do the fish go when they lower it. I know some must stay in the water that remains but it looks like not a lot of water in some areas....
Now if fishing season was open and the boat in the water, I could go out and think about....h2l

I just came home from fishing the half full section near my home. Got 6 really nice perch, could have kept another half bucket of gills (but didn't). Caught 5 bullhead a few white perch and a small pike. In 3 hours.

I'm always amazed at the abundance of fish and species in the canal. Especially since a couple weeks ago it was a mere trickle of water.

I'm sure they'll open it when they can. There's a lot of tourism dollars generated by the canal system.

In the BN today -

Erie Canal will not open on May 15, Canal Corp. confirms

The Erie Canal and the other waterways in the New York State Canal System will not open as scheduled May 15, and a state announcement hinted that the canal might open only in sections this year.
The state Canal Corp. posted a notice on its website last week confirming the expectations of canal users that the canal wouldn't open on time. Offseason repairs and maintenance were halted in mid-March at eight locations, including Lockport, because of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's Covid-19 PAUSE initiative.
"However, to support the Canal's continued use as a prime recreational waterway, the Canal Corporation is currently evaluating operational options to ensure New Yorkers will have access to the Canal system, if even potentially on a regional basis, this season," the notice said.
"We recognize that this is an extraordinarily difficult time and are sensitive to potential hardships Canal stakeholders, as well as many other New Yorkers, may experience. The situation with Covid-19 is ever-evolving and we are trying to adapt our plans accordingly," the state notice continued.

I read that yestrday. My section still at the same level. Hoping it fills. My home  waters.

Fished it today from shore. Bullhead, white perch, some really nice perch, a few good sized largemouth, bluegills and a sucker.

It's the potpourri of fishing.

Never know what you will catch in the canal.  Its got more fish spices than any single lake in NY..  Yes there's big walleye in there my biggest was 8 LBS on a bass crankbait..  Big tiger muskys and huge catfish..Along with almost everything else
that swims in nys waters..

Up another foot or so last night. Still fishable from shore for me. Found a few nice perch and bluegill with a bonus bullhead and this guy.

Around 4 lbs or so. Took a piece of worm about 1" long.

First carp of the year anyway.

Its a fun stream for bluegill, Rockies and the occasional smallmouth. The downstream end from Alderman road to the canal is best.

That aside its a phenomenal stream for carp on the fly rod......if you have the patience.

Canal came up another few inches overnight.

Latest announcement is that canal workers have returned to work and the canal should be entirely open by July 4. Hopefully they will complete the work on the Rochester lock33 and fill the sections through to Newark sooner than that.

Those sections fill mainly from the Genesee river. Im anxiously awaiting!

Took the 2 wt and some flies to the canal this morning. Caught more gills than I could count. Some really nice ones at that. Water in my section is about 5-6' in the middle. Saw several carp porposing, bass taking minnows on the surface and bait everywhere.

Freezer is pretty full so today was a sportfishing day.

Gotta tie some more "Double Martinis"...today!

You weren’t kidding! Took NY30 south out of Amsterdam today and you could almost walk across the canal!

There was a family walking on land in the middle, to the east of NY30 which I assume is normally underwater

Canal in my section came up about a foot yesterday. About 3 feet more and I can launch. The marina that rents the Packett Boats is frantically getting boats out of storage. They have a dozen or so and also have another 20 slips for the yachts and houseboats.

Things are looking up!

I just wonder how many fish died during this fiasco...didn't understand how not working on the locks during shutdown made any sense since most of the work is outside and rarely see more than 1 or 2 workers at a time...unnecessary!

the left wants to shut everything down to make current officials look as bad as they can. a lot of the so called rules do absolutly nothing to help the cause.  this entire thing has been blown way out of proportion!  the more left the state officials are the worse it is.

We'll be that as it may.....there's no shortage of fish in the canal. At its lowest point I could walk across in hip boots. The fishing has been really good the past month. I caught perch in the 1.5 lb range and gills as big as my hand.....2xl.

One largemouth I caught was well over 3 lbs. and  bullhead approaching 2 lbs. There are no crappies in the canal.....they all died.....yup......all dead!

This canal has been filled and emptied for more than 100 years. The fish are still there.

I'm looking forward to launching my boat tomorrow morning. And happy the lock attendants are back to work.

Maiden voyage on the canal this morning. All good! Except for all the crap floating in the water. Made some timing adjustments to the motor and it ran better than it ever has. Car towed the boat with no effort.

Fish didn't cooperate, but....I'm on the water!

Title: Re: NYS Canal system may not open...
Post by: rgfixit on May 26, 2020, 12:39 PM
Yes I did. Had to make a couple adjustments to depth and sensitivity. But it's a pretty sweet little finder. Very crisp and bright. I'm not convinced that recording speed over ground by gps is very accurate relative to intended trolling speeds. Didn't play with the plotter at all. No need on the canal.

Weather will be a lot nicer next week. Cooler daytime temps. I'll head to Honeoye or Canandiagua and give it a workout.

Overall, for the money and given my small boat....nice finder.

Thats good to know RG, you may need to adjust the map speed a bit to match if that's an option.  (It is on some)

I have a kit to install my echomap and panoptix on the boat from my ice kit but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I hope they get a crew out just East of E-15 in Fort Plain to dredge the crud out. At the moment there is a real nice rock/sandbar out of the Otsquagao creek that spans most of the river to within about 15 feet of the northern bank. Even with the river full it will be less than 3 feet under the water across most of the river. That could be interesting if a deep draft boat comes along!

I was down by  Utica over the weekend and  went over d**e Rd over the canal and its bone dry.  Well almost its only 3' across of water...

Had a talk with the Lock 30 Lockmaster yesterday. He said they plan on opening July 4 if all goes well. Not too sure what that means but, hopefully they'll be on schedule.

The marina down the road from me has a dozen Packett boats ready and waiting. Losing 2 months of rentals has to hurt a small business like theirs. Those boats run $2500 a week and they're usually booked a year in advance.
