went fishing in hopes of a few walleyes after awhile it didn't look like my day but I was having fun with the small mouths, I decided to keep a couple and fillet them for dinner .... I fillet them iced them till I got home then breaded them and fried them and grilled some corn on the cob .....the bronze bulldogs where pretty tasty and everyone enjoyed them ...... I think I will keep some more .....
-
Sounds like a viable alternative to me Trap. Nice work.
-
if I can eat a bottom feeding bullhead guess I can eat a bass lol ...seriously ate a lot of them as a kid , then it became fishing politically correct to release them and say they tasted bad well .... they don't in fact they were good and yeah was a great alternative... in fact i'll target a few just for dinner now and then
-
I enjoyed eating them when I was younger. They’re just a big sunfish, what’s not to like?
-
Us old farts remember when the size limit was 10 inches. I believe the limit was 6 back then. Those 10 inchers were just fine table fare. Incoming!
-
Nothing wrong with bass. Most of the time when people say certain foods taste bad, they just have no clue how to prep and cook them.
-
I kept a couple largemouth bass ice fishing that were exceptional eaters.

Jon - you hit the nail on the head. The only time I keep any panfish and bass is when they are caught through the ice and early spring when the water is just above freezing. There is something about that hot summer water that does not make freshwater fish appetizing to me which is why I keep to the salt for fish fries.

I remember the 10 inch size and bass were the fish everyone wanted ......
-
Yep. 6 was the limit and 10" was the size. I used to like them as a kid but somehow they became "fishy" to cook. Glad you enjoyed your meal. Might have to try one again!
-
Omg you killed a bass the tournament guys will be soooo mad 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 enjoy the fish dinner
-
nothing wrong with bass. i prefer largemouth over smallmouth. clean cool water makes them even better bass cheeks are yummy.
-
No minimum size here in Maine, in the souther half, we’re allowed two with only one over 14”. Norther half they are treated as the invasive species that they are, no bag or size limit.

I always keep a few smallmouth from chamount bay every year I swear they seem to taste better up there than from my local finger lakes. I keep a few largemouth from hemlock lake here and there all year long, the taste reminds me of when I was a young kid catching and eating with my uncle. Good times!!

You are lucky. Bass are out of season during ice season in New York. :-[ :-[
-
Not everywhere. We keep them in Conesus and Honeoye and I look forward to it. They taste pretty good that time of year.
-
I find bass to be great table fare but only from a few lakes. Some lakes, like those where bass feed on white perch, gizzard shad or alewife are not as tasty. But that goes for any species. Focus on cooler water and where sunfish are the primary baitfish.
-
I was hoping to see a triggered bass guy in this thread lol, but yes! Smaller bass are delish

Well I stand corrected. All I know is the waters around my area bass is closed during ice season and that's when I catch some beauties and can't keep them. So for you guys that get to keep them again I'll say you are lucky. :rotflol: :rotflol:

Fascinating.

I can't say I've caught a bass on the hard water less than 3lbs. They are all monsters

TRAPPER HOW DARE YOU KEEP BASS...DONT YOU. KNOW THERE A GAME FISH ..CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY..on another note.the little guy and myself were fishing last weekend he hooked a nice smaller about 15 inches.he was happy of course and kept it..another guy says nic fish he will get bigger when you release him..little guy said I'm not throwing that back.the guy looks at me and said your letting him keep that I. Said yep..he goes you should be ashamed of yourself letting him keep that bass..I was getting getting ready to flip and out of no wheres the little guy said you should be ashamed of having a fishing pole in your hands and little guy said why dont you go fish someplace else..and stop picking on kids or my dad and I will throw your @$$ in the river..the guy left I was cracking up..he did a good job I put a few choice words in there also ...the guy pretty much put me down for letting him keep it..
-
that's funny now tell him when I see him were both going in the water !!!!! get the waders salmon are almost here...let the debauchery begin :rotflol:
-
Now Trapper. You know that Big Guy only catches dinks. He can't possibly get something as big as a salmon. Mabe he can take Little Guy and let him get the salmon for him. ;D
-
Don't you just love it when someone tries to clobber you with THEIR OPINION. Good job to little guy! :thumbup_smilie:
-
well when some ones opinion hurts a boy that's doing nothing illegal or wrong then yeah the guy was being a jerk .....shame shame
-
I just ate largemoth from the other day....grilled one and breaded and deep fried the other....mmm delish.
BTW...I believe honeyoe you can still keep bass thru the ice.
-
The "Don't keep any bass" mentality which is held by some is, I think, relatively new. Does it come from the professional bass fishing shows on tv? I just don't get it. It's a self sustaining fishery in every body of water that I know of. Personally I would rather eat perch but will eat some smaller ones occasionally, especially from colder water. I can understand this concept for other species like muskies because they are scarce in most bodies of water and from what I hear not the best table fare anyway. Not that I have ever caught one! By now we all know what gobys do to bass eggs and fry when the legal (or illegal) catch and release bass fishing takes place in June. I'm sure that has a much bigger impact on bass numbers, but they seem to be doing ok in any case.

If he can't catch fish he better be bringing snacks
-
When I can't catch walleyes I keep bass. I soak them in milk overnight. I don't know where I got that idea from (maybe a dream) but they seem to taste better. Maybe I just like milk.
-
went looking in the freezer found my last pack of bullheads frozen in water ..... pasta salad and rice with zuchinni ...good diner
-
You didn't catch enough...I've got several packages left. Thinking of a fish fry soon.

Brined walleye overnight, resting now to get glaze before smoking today for chowder and salad

I don't care what people catch and keep as long as its legal. People that try to tell me what to do with the legal fish I catch usually find me doing more of what they are complaining about just to p!ss them off more. I've had bass people talk that way to me too. After that I went out of my way to tell them how many I catch and keep every time out (even if I'm REALLY releasing them). Good times.
-
I've had the same thing happen when I'm ice fishing honeoye bass are open and there great through the ice
Had two guys from Avon anglers give me a hard time ,went on and on finally I said "A Hole know what else I do with them? I keep them for spring and put one under my tomato and pepper plants! ( I dont I filet and eat them and use scraps) but it ended conversation quickly) hahaha

Walleye came out great! Low salt more towards brown sugar and honey! Great smoke flavor hickory/beech wood mix
-
Those look awesome gotagetem. I never tried a smallmouth from icefishing because the places I fish don't allow them to be kept. I bet they are very good from cold water, like rockies, same family of fish (sunfish family).
-
Rather eat a largemouth than a smallmouth. Not that they're terrible or anything.
Rg
-
i also like largemouth better
-
I gotta agree too...I've noticed on muy last smb there was a bloodline on skinside I had to trim away but the lmb was nice and clean...and tasty.
-
I really enjoy eating the largemouth I catch ice fishing in Honeoye or Conesus. Something about that cold water really helps. Just about any fish I intend to eat I bleed out and then ice.. simple procedure but I see that many guys don’t bother. Too bad for them.

Trolling for smallies with my grandpa and uncle out of blind sodus are some of my best memories. Everytime I see the wire fish basket with the blue lid reminds me of it hanging off the boat full of em. Grew up eating them.
