My First Attempt at Cicada Fly
« on: May 31, 2021, 12:36 PM »
Been hearing about a broodx cicada hatch and thought I’d take a shot at tying one just in case I run into a hatch of these critters. Saw posts from Tennessee on TU site and man they raised some quality fish with cicada flys . Here’s how it turned out! Hex

Looks good Hex! We saw a bunch camping last week in Shades state park. Been hearing about eating them myself, but didn't think about the fishing possibilities. Let us know if you try it out.

Great looking fly Hex!
Have you seen any cicadas in the area yet?

Nice tie! Ought to work I’d say.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

That's awesome.  My father law was fishing a lake that had them every where this last week. He filled his cricket cage with them and hammered big bluegill.

I haven’t been out to see if any are hatching around my area yet. But would be nice to find some and try the cicada fly. I’m pretty sure it will get the job done if I get the opportunity! Hex

The wings were just pieces of clear plastic that I cut to shape and used a permanent marker to make the webbing. UTube has a number of different patterns of Cicadas, all using different materials and techniques, check them out if interested. Hex

Good job on the fly! That will do it for sure.
Haven't seen or heard any yet around Hobart.
My Niece in Martinsville said they are covered up with them. Said ground temperature has to be 60 degrees for two weeks for them to emerge.

They are really spotty in central part of the state. We have a few here, but a short drive north we get the "full buzz".  Drive the other way and nada

fish on,

very nice!

one of the homeowners was talking about the swarm thats going to lay waste to everything green.  she didnt want to put out much garden because of it.  we will see i guess.
according to the internet they do not eat foliage but drink sap from trees and twigs. They live on tree root sap underground
