Needed a break from the canal.  Dropped some dough on a new 5w and let em have it.  Its been fun!

Nice work Jon.  Glad the new setup is working out well.  I had a nice skunking saturday morning on the Deerfield.  Then I pumped up a tube like the rest of googans and floated down the river.

Nice job man. What did you end up with for an outfit?
Title: Re: River fun.
Post by: lowaccord66 on Jul 09, 2018, 09:36 AM
Pat that's funny!  Ive had those googans in some sections.  They avoid riverton though since the water temp is still 50's!

Will its a 5 weight sage foundation with a #2 lamson liquid reel.  Reel is good except the googan at the shop who spooled it (I should have known better) didnt tighten the spool all the way.  First drag pulling rainbow and I had the spool almost come off!

Nice!

I run a 4-5 Weight Powell rod and a Lamson reel. Fun fun fun!!!

Post by: westernmas on Jul 09, 2018, 10:13 AM
Lamsons are great reels.  I believe all, or at least most, have a sealed drag.  One of these days I'm going to upgrade from the bargain bin fly outfits.  However, my cabelas outfit was my first purchase and the rod and reel I still end up using the most.  Keeping the line in good condition sure helps.

I use the same outfit. For trout fishing, ive found the reel to be nothing more than a line holder, as i play most fish in by hand. Not to often im bringing them in on the reel.

When you hook into a nice smallie or a carp, the reel is nice to have.

Until you have a steelhead at the other end.  Then you def need a good reel.  The drag on my Orvis Encounter is not that smooth and it was a pain fighting a steelhead on a low end reel.

To each is own.  I went cheaper than I thought I was going to.  Remembet to some its not a matter of needs instead it is a matter of wants.  You can bet some bass, pike and other species will be taken with that reel.  Maybe even an albie....

Not to mention in the past two weeks 3 trout over 20" have been caught and released one bow was 24"  Ive landed 5 over 20" this season...so im after fish that require good drag especially if Im using 3x.

Title: Re: River fun.
Post by: lowaccord66 on Jul 09, 2018, 03:37 PM
You sir nailed it. The rod is where its at.

Rod is absolutely worthless if you pick a fish on 3x tippet and snap cause you suck playing your line or lack a solid drag.  You could have a $3000.00 blank and it would be toilet paper.

Now if your chasing dinky 9" stockies then sure...

That sounds like a nice fight!

Got a pic of the bow, or any of the other holdovers?

Funny how, especially in the northeast, the big rainbows always seem to be in the rivers...

Drag is not always needed for steel head look at center pin reels..  most don't have drags .  but are as smoth as can be.. and have to be lightly palmed to land steel head.. I found some of the low end reels are just as good as high end..  except if buying a cheap $30 cabelas die cast reel..   versus a Ross momentum etc. There are reason that reels $30  and the Ross $500 aprox.. but seen a few reels that sell for around $150 and less that have had some d**n good drags in them!!  like a Ross Cimarron , a old florida fly reels fresh water reel model fw456... and orvis  cfo 123 size click and pawl drag reels. To name the smaller reels I got..   now compare the 150 to a 30 cabelas the 150 is way better..  but compare the $150 to a $500 reels there not much difference.. in the drag. All that's left is large arbor versus standard arbor, machining etc..  in those prices but that's how it goes..  the more expensive reel is meant to be a show piece not fished hard if you ask me.. more of a conousour type reel if you will..

Ya boondox I agree and I looked at all of those too.

I think I posted them if you want to go back through and look.  Granted those were all spin fish the so point being I nail one on 3x..Ill need drag.

The other aspect Boondox is one mans cheap reel is another mans expensive reel and vice versa.

http://www.farmingtonriver.com/river-report/ (http://www.farmingtonriver.com/river-report/)

Some examples on why you need a good drag if you fish this river.  Its unique because the river almost never goes out of temp so the trout not only holdover but reproduce naturally.

Back in the day we used Palm reels , mostly scientific angler for salmon and steelhead, some of us even used the martin 72s and did ok 😉 and if we needed a little more drag we taped our fingers on the other hand , I still use a palm reel to this day , and I still have a Martin 72 with the solid spool in perfect working order and somewhere a SA new in box lol

Ya if I palmed a fish at this stage in the game I'd just be leaving it with jewlery.  I'm not that good...heck I was happy enough just to hook a few.

I think Lance is going to come down and pin some soon.

I haven't fished the salmon river yet.  I have stayed at Shane's a few times but we were always out trolling Ontario.  Seriously though Ive been using 5x because I dont have the finesse to hook a big one on 3x.  I just break off.

Those old scincetific angler reels are the reels people use to gut a square out of the back side of the frame..  and pop rivit a thick piece of leather to.. they use it as a break to Palm the reel harder mainly for lager steel head.. same with those Martin reels I even seen thIs in a book a few year after I found out about it.. they would push there thumb threw the hole pushing the leather agaist spool..

Shad are a BLAST on the fly rod when they are around. Allan and i got into a bunch on the CT river a few years back on the fly rods. Good times on a 5wt lol

Ya I dont get up there enough to be able to palm a fish.  I maybe go up one or two times a year so I don't get to practice fighting a fish like that on a long rod too frequently.

2-3lb small mouth were fun on the 4-5 W as well. 3X for larger flies like woolys 5X for smaller nymphs.

Whos backwards Mike?  Me or you...coulda sworn my 3x was 3.5lb and the 5x is 5lb.  Then again I am literally dyslexic so those types of things allude me.

I think you’re backwards low, but I am complete newbie to the long rod so I could be mistaken. I recently ordered some tippet, and I believe 3x is stronger than 5x. I believe the 0x has the thickest diameter, and decreases in diameter as you go up to 1x,2x and so on.

zwiggles you are correct.  the higher the number for tippet the smaller the diameter the line.  0x is stronger than 7x.  I watch guys on the swift tie on size 26 flies on 7x or I've even heard of 8x being used and it takes them about 30 minutes to tie on one fly.

Zwiggles and westernmas got it right Jon. The higher the number the thinner the line and vise versa. Kinda like shot in a shotgun shell. The higher the number the smaller the pellets.

I surprized you dont just buy a quality flurocarbon line like Seagur or red label or similar.  All that your buying on that spool is regular non tapered flurocarbon you get 200 yards versus 30 meters if you got friends that fish same area fill their spools  for like $3 to $5 bucks..better then paying $11 to $15 what ever it says on that green tag you got on your spool.. tapered lasers are different then reg flat non tapered line? Just a tip.. only problem is it don't come in 5 lb test in the bulk spools all they sell is 4 or 6 lb tests.. that is why a lot of guys don't buy the leader wheels except to refill them..

Supporting a local shop boondox.  Cost is not a consideration and the performance has been outstanding.  4 so far this evening.  I was doing what you mention 20 years ago when I first got into flyfishing.  Only difference was back then it was stren.   ;D

Also I have the 4,6 and 8 invisix.  Thats what I use for freshwater leader on my trolling and spinning stuff.  I sure hope those marketing guys at seaguar don't have you tricked!  Only leader material I buy from them is 50 and 60 for stripers and pike.

im using 55lb berkley big game instead of seagur for bass and blues this year in the canal and im having exactly the same luck at 1/5 the cost. there was a study done and heavy mono is just as abrassive resistant as heavy fluro. there is a difference between the 2 in lighter lines though but anything above 40 seems the same.

I did that one year but I used Ande instead of big game.  Results were fine.

For some reason I fray up my fluro quick while jigging. I hate having to cut it back because it's so expensive. The mono is a lot easier on the wallet and it has better knot strength.

I know several guys who target large pike through the ice and they use 100+lb mono.  At that point I don't know why they don't use steel but after seeing the results I don't question their methods.

Nice, I just took the next few days off for some much needed C&R. Going to fish strippers one morning, troll winni the other, and then try to figure this long pole business out.

Is that a bead headed nymph you have pictured? I’m still trying to figure out all the lingo with flies. I’ve onky ever really used streamer flies on my fly rod, and need to learn some other techniques.

Pheasant tail beaded nymph.
Title: Re: River fun.
Post by: lowaccord66 on Jul 12, 2018, 01:48 PM
Its a quasimoto and its more of a dropper than a nymph.  The phesant tails typicaly are straight shanked hooks.  Pheasant tail was my second choice last night.  90% of the trout ive nymphed this season are on that quasimoto.  I havent been running it as a dropper...

When I fish for strippers I go to the bank and get crispy ones.  You should come visit wiggles.  Im in rediscovery phase myself and am absolutely loving it.

If you don't I got a ton of size 14 tmc 2457 model hooks but not 18 or 20 size I can tie you on size 14 pheasant tail nymphs might even have some bead heads to throw in too it . That is if you know what size they are??  Really need a hook hackle gauge to figure it out??  Wondering what there seeing there weather a b.w.o. nymph  or etc?? As in the tiny bwo nymphs?

I got a couple in the farmy yesterday evening.  They were all relatively small so no pics.  End up with a decent brookie and two cookie cutter bows.  I did have what appeared to be a big brown take a swipe at big streamer that I started with and then I lost another that had some weight when it started shaking its head.  Soft hackles and dries were the ticket.  I was using a size 16 hornberg but the fish were rising to much smaller flies so only one on the dry.  The other two came on a guide choice hares ear soft hackle that I tied up.
