Fishing and Foraging
« on: May 05, 2024, 03:52 PM »
Yesterday was a beautiful day - - sunny, blue skies and temps (by late morning) in the low 70's.

Unfortunately, though, no fishing for me, since I was booked solid with foraging with two friends (in the morning), opening/closing up for an event for a historical museum that I volunteer for (in the afternoon) and a game dinner (in the evening).

On the plus side, the foraging was successful (ramps, fiddleheads, water cress and saddle mushrooms), the historical event was well received (albeit sparsely attended) and the game dinner was phenomenal.

Today, the weather wasn't so nice - - starting with a light drizzle and progressing to a steady drizzle, with temps supposedly (per my car thermometer) in the upper 40's, but it felt colder - - and, at a couple points, I could even see my breath in the air.

But the fishing (between 10:45 AM and 3:15 PM) was good.

I started on the East Housatonic in Dalton (below the Depot Street dam) and caught one 8" brown, two 14" rainbows and six 10" to 14" brookies.

Then it was on to the West Housatonic (officially the SW Housatonic, but it's along W Housatonic Street, so what the heck) in Pittsfield.

I began on Hungerford Street, where I caught a 12" brown (behind the Iron Man machine shop) and six 9" to 12" perch (under the bridge).

Next I drove to Greendale Avenue, and waded downstream from the bridge there.

Along the way, I reeled in a 10" brown and 10" dace before getting out at the big bend by West Housatonic Street and walking back to my car.

Finally, I drove to the NW Housatonic (officially the W Housatonic) along Wahconah Street, and fished below the dam.

There I landed six 9" to 11" perch, one 10" rock bass and a 10" brown (only the second trout that I've ever caught on that branch).

By this time, I was thoroughly soaked and shivering, so I drove home and warmed up with a hot shower.

Now (to return full circle to the foraging topic I opened this post with) my wife and I are just starting to ferment fresh batch of dandelion wine.

So, as you can see, it's been a busy weekend.
