None of the bays are open enough to get a boat out there?

Last weekend Alton Bay was only open to the bandstand.  Enough open water for a small boat but not really a big boat.  Wolfeboro Bay looked mostly frozen when I drove by but I did not get real close up to it.

Why bother using a boat when fish is now close to shore near the inlets ? The OP asked about shore fishing. I've see a couple caught on the opening day April 1st. I have a small boat I can launch from anywhere (no ramp needed), but have absolutely no glue what the advantage sitting in the boat would be ?

Might be just getting that little bit further out from shore, but then again I don't target them so what do I know??? ;D

You can be more mobile in a boat vs on shore. I would also suspect the salmon are running under the existing ice and using it to “corner” the smelt.
