Title: how about a panfish jig swap
Post by: perchgypsy on Mar 01, 2016, 04:54 PM
After seeing a few guys tying I am wonderingif guys would be into a swap...
say first 6 to 10 guys interested make two per guy involved
these will be made by yourself and this is strictly for fun...
so say there is 6 guys down to swap...that would mean each would make 10 jigs to swap
And if this is successful we can do it for different seasons
but for now lets see about panfish jigs
I know I'm in and if there is any input on any rules just chime in..
these can be painted up or tied with favorite patterns...or both
I'd like to put a time limit on this so we have a chance to use them this spring...how about first ten guys or end of march for guys to get stuff together...and like I said input from you all is fine nothing I am typing is firm till we see how many are in and will get jigs out..
We can have jigs sent to one member then he/she can make sure guys are in get there jigs divided correctly with return addresses to receive others products...anyone like this idea?OK who is in?
So let me say I'm in
1.perchgypsy               6 sizematters
2.rgfixit                         7rpdog
3.boondox                    8 Icejohn

I'm in, gotta start posting photos but I think I might have a few I can spare ;).  Just stocked up on a bunch of material the other day.  Been working on jiggy buggers lately (jig with a wooly bugger hackle body), worked great for steel this winter, I guarantee the gills and crappie would devour them

Also what size do most prefer?   I think most of what I have tied now are 1/32 oz and 1/64 oz, but I was going to pick up some 1/80 oz and smaller as well
Title: Re: how about a panfish jig swap
Post by: big_guy_13021 on Mar 03, 2016, 05:44 AM
1/64 is my favorite but I also tie smaller 1/80 and 1/124 oz I also tyed some bugs with hackle and got 3 limits of crappies and Gill with it 1/80 oz
Title: Re: how about a panfish jig swap
Post by: perchgypsy on Mar 03, 2016, 06:57 AM
That's what I think is neat about a swap we get to see what other prefer
I sometimes use 3/32 for crappie and perch
And smaller for gills...I use alot of bucktail
and some marabou...then sometimes I use bright and flashy or all natural  ;D
I mainly fish oneida and surrounding areas but when it comes to the swap it's a option to get other ideas and see if these work in your fishing spots
so as your making your jig it's what you prefer and we get a chance to see/ use that   :thumbup_smilie
looks like we should have 10 guys in a week or so

Also what size do most prefer?   I think most of what I have tied now are 1/32 oz and 1/64 oz, but I was going to pick up some 1/80 oz and smaller as well

jaffmac85 that was a good idea it don't matter to me I can fish any size... I got no lead laws were I am at and no gape laws .... some states have a maximum is why I say that they can fish and some have minimum weight that they can fish... if there is a problem with weight or hook size let us know asap so we can accommodate you I use size 6 matzuo sickle hook for pans and size 4 for crappie these hook prevent fish mortality better on my lake  and also the smaller fish cant eat it so it weeds them out automatically... say a fish of like 7 inches and less will prevent them from  eating the bend is so big stuff like crappie can get them in their mouth and large gills of 8 inch plus the reason I like sickle hooks is you are not trying to remove the hook on a small gill in it gill rake with a hook with that standard round bend in a  Aberdeen hooks in the size 6 and smaller...

I got shad dart, ball, and tube s  style heads what would every one prefer? all in 1/32 ounce approx..  the ball heads have a rubber worm collar I can remove so they may weight less also have horse heads with spinner blades if all you fish is crappie it is a good option.. gills not so much cause of the bigger profile shape and size of head.. so let me know what you all like the best all mine are 1/32 ounce on a size 6 sickle if that helps? was thinking doing two style if the swap is small like a shad dart and a tube s style two each for every one  or would every one rather a ball style head?

My plan was trying to get ten guys involved in a swap
guys that make there own jigs
and with that see what they use for panfish
Plan was make 18 jigs and send them to one guy who splits them up because (and I'm not saying this will happen)
A fellow might say I'm in and never send a jig at all....
so if we have a deadline and things work as planned I'd say once the guy who is the sender(I have no problem with being this guy)gets all guys jigs involved divides them up and sends thme out to each guy on my original post...(being first ten) should recieve 18 jigs
but I just planned on making 18 similar jigs to which each guy involved ends up with the same outcome from me
I like sickle hooks ..I like any hooks  ;D
sometimes I like playing hookie and fishing with no hook...Dr suess like or what  ;D
but I was hoping you guys had patterns and wanted to share your go to or maybe something different I think if I tell you what I want I prob can tye it myself you know?
Title: Re: how about a panfish jig swap
Post by: perchgypsy on Mar 03, 2016, 01:39 PM
And also another reason I was thinking of staying with 18 same jig was so all entries get the same package...easier to split..also be neat to see if the same patterns are hot all over...hey any input is all good...like my original post said nothing  is firm

I like the way you've designed it.   Seems like it should work well.  I like the "anything goes" attitude too, adds a little variety to the group.  That way everyone doesn't end up with 18 identical jigs that we could've done ourselves.  Sparks a bit of discussion in the forum after the fact too as I'm sure we will all want to pick each other's brains as to designs and materials used.  I'm going to pick up some more materials this weekend so I should be all set with my 18 early next week if not sooner.  I think this was a great idea
Title: Re: how about a panfish jig swap

Thanks for the input jeffmac85
I hear you there  but my thought process is  guy who is the sender
he gets the jigs now if he gets "one" and another doesn't is he a dink...trying to avoid all the middle stuff
main reason for that is because I want this to be successful because this is hopefully one of many bud
reason I started off with panfish jigs
1 it's the season soon
2 price of shipping these for first time swap here
and me saying I could tye it was more say than being cocky
if I came to you as a tyer and said I want you to tye me 18 3/32 round heads with white  marabou and some purple flash....
and you suprise me with 18 jigs you have proven to work on panfish ...I may have never known what they were...which one you think I could tye faster?
can't put it much plain as that
I do see your idea...and we all prob have good ones ...I was in hopes that this would show us what guys are using in new york..michagan...minnesota...indiana...hoping to reach tyres from all over and see these unique patterns....be it for panfish walleye trout ....
my pattern is one of the most sought after baitfish in oneida I'm having a hard time at my vise each one I tye to even give these away because I have only gave these to family and never seen these on the net or in bait shops
I'm thinking even to ask no pics
I hardly ever fish outside the group I have fished with in my life...family mostly
I'm by far not the best tye on here or around my area...but I catch some fish on my patterns...and also I have never used a book ...self taught
you see this jig and you might even laugh get it wet and let me know if it works outside oneida area  ;)

Sounds good bud...wondering if alot of you guys who pour your own jigs do you try to paint them while they are still hot?
also about how much does it cost per jig to make your own?
Got my 18 done already if we don't have 10 guys I know I use them so no hard feelings  :whistling: :whistling:

no if I pour them then paint them it will burn the paint... only cost about 35cent per pound of lead at 1/32 ounce per jig I can get 500 jig at 1/32 ounce per pound of lead 500 jig hooks cost around $11-$15  for the sickle hook for size 6 it cost $18.60 plus postage... just for lead and hooks that $19 then figure on bottle of powder paint per 500 jigs so $5 so $24 at that point for 500 size 6 jigs  you would get less then 100 on e-bay for $25  I buy my hooks from captain hooks discount hook ware house it is a dot com web site so google it... so I would say 5 cent to pour and paint each jig to answer you questions.... then factor in time it takes to pour etc even at $5 a hour it cost you to do them take 3-4 hours to do 500 poured and another couple hours to paint and cure. but if I do it for my friends and my self it only cost about 5 cent a jig to make... if people I don't know asks me you got to figure in the time it takes ....so you don't get screwed on time and money...

also got my 18 done who getting these jigs and sending them out?  I want to throw in some thing for the swap miser..  either trout flies or some thing they can use just for being the guy that helped get her going... is it rgfixit who is being the swap miser or some one else?

Never tried painting while hot.  Usually focused on getting a quantity poured, would lose quality and efficiency by the time you get them out of the mold, cut the sprue on each and get them dipped.  Cost is less if you don't count your lead pot, molds, and time.  I find the advantage is in finding heads not usually available and using a variety of hooks in sizes and styles you won't find commercially available.  Like putting a #8 hook in a heavier head intended for a #2, etc.  I like a heavy head with a smaller hook to carry a smaller plastic as a compact bait in deep water.  Sometimes the other way around, a bigger, longer, lighter wire, wide gap hook in a lightweight jig head for a larger plastic.  Something to kill time and keep me off shaky ice this time of year..........

Alright Rpdog is in ...thanks for the input boondox and sizematters
Trying to see if investing in all the stuff would be worth it....I'm paying about.15-17 cents a piece right now
guess thats a hell of a savings after 10000 jigs but I'll stick to buying them  by the thousands for now
3 more spots to fill
I will be the sender no prob.I'll pm address when we get ten guys or by end of next week

if you shop at janns net craft they give a 10% of coupon to their customers threw e-mail  buy the lead kiln then think about size when you buy it I got the magnum melter I do weight of around 2-3 pounds and can pour up to 6 by 2 pounds from one full pot. if  no way your going to pour two pound weights go with the smaller kiln for like I think it cost $35 at janns net craft the one I got costs $55 at barlows tackle and $65 or $75 at janns so shop around and remember to factor in that discount at janns.. as for forms check hiltz molds, lilmac molds, and do it molds... there mold makers if you need a custom molds that is a machine shop that does those...   for lead check scrap yards and ebay or even talk to scuba divers at dive shops give them a incentive to make some of their dive money back and make your self some lead.. I prefer ladle off pots the pour pot every one that use them gets burned from using sub par lead and the pour spigot clogging. if your not buying scarp lead and not pouring bullets etc go with the ladle off style pot it will save you from getting burned get a small ladle of like two ounce for doing smaller jigs. I think that ladle cost about $5 and the lead kiln $35 total investment there $40 plus a do it mold that you like and hooks for mold so another $45 so total $80.... then your friend ask for some and his two friends and there four friend etc... etc.. then you start charging for $85 you could by 1000's of jigs if you own the forms you can make and sell 1000's of jigs on e-bay and to friends... then you got to obtain lead don't fall for the fluxing compounds all you need is wax or saw dust it will flux the same way as the flux compounds just save your self $10 finding that out  but really the choice is yours on how much you really need...

Thanks for the input boondox you have a lot of good posts and helping in the decision to try it all out
thought it would be more money to invest ..I mainly tye 1/4-5/8 heads for walleye so I can see where this will take me ...Them molds are expensive ...when you get my jig heads you will see the style I mainly tye....they are made for fishing rock piles and structure....u prob seen these before ...Them do it molds are nice with the handles...I've seen some don't have handles..I've been tying for  couple yrs but am just getting I to the panfish sizes more and more....so I can see it now got to get 12 different molds to start my craze...lol
Title: Re: how about a panfish jig swap
Post by: boondox on Mar 07, 2016, 06:12 PM
so I can see it now got to get 12 different molds to start my craze...lol

that is exactly what happens that why that last line was up there sooner or later you get the feeling to by a shad dart jig and use it but twice a decade lol's but still can you even find shad dart jigs on most site ? only site I know that played with them is jamming jigs for ice fishing and steel head jigs etc.... I am sure there is more but at the price some of these jigs cost is it with buying the mold for them but once you got the lead pot you usually fall for buying the form then 2 months later your not using it. that "new hot jig pattern"  form .

the reason I bought my pot is $5 times 15 lost a year it equaled out fishing off the wall...they charge $5 to $7 for a 2# surf claw at andersons pro bait and grapentins is not much off of that.. I make them for about 80 cents $75 for the year lost compared to $57 +$40=$97 for the mold I used this mold for the last three years so I saved on average $225 for my self plus buddies that fish there with me...so you see why I own one??? they cant reuse the lead that the brass rots out on half of them that the divers find or the brass clip on point is broken that mean we got to re-pour the lead on half of them.. this saves money cause the other half are usable for time being I bought 350pounds@$130 bucks off of the divers and half of it has to be re-poured from last year...

then owning walleye jig forms and the other hot at the time jig forms/weight forms  etc... forms this save some time by cutting out the middle man but do the other form save money.. no but to pursuit other stuff you need them so your not paying $50 at the bait store every time you go in minimum... so if you spend every waking moment on the week ends fishing you got to go to the bait store 2 time that $100 just in jig head, tails, etc weights, spoons etc.. trying to cut back on having to dump money in to a bottom less pit is possible just got to weight your options and find stuff like what you use most like a 5/8 round ball head jig work but buying the 3/4 foot ball head mite only be used once in your life time so why buy it so stick with the basic stuff not the off the wall out of the box thinking stuff  that you wont use ever again keep it simple...

if you use split shot or bell sinker that another thing to look at same with other things one weight will do the same thing as the other 50 out there so why buy 50 different forms is the point ?   like the bell sinker and the drop shot ball sinker... they do the same thing the only different is the clasp that hold them on the line so why would you need one form for each I would just buy some thing like a bell sinker it is more universal...you got to look at them that way too...  that way you save money on not buying too many forms find what's universal but like said in the first paragraph my necessity is different then yours and may out weight yours so look at it that way...  your not always saving money when you do you know it...

suprise to see mainly northeast guys...pretty neat
2 more spots left...hey if your thinking about getting in on this don't be afraid to ask questions or address any concerns before hand
hope everyone enjoys this swap and this is just a start to swaps of all kinds....can't wait to tye one of your homemade
jigs on and land a couple pannies to post later in the season....take it easy

Need some input...say we have 10 guys today how long would each member need to make, package, and send there jigs out?
I'm thinking 10 days after last guy signs up or 10 days after April 1st.whichever comes first..doable??
I'm writing up the way this is in my head (write upto follow after I recieve participants input on duration of swap)
and again nothing is firm and input is appreciated...hope all involved is satisfied enough  to try this again in the near furure :thumbup_smilie:

Here is how it works icejohn..I'm going to collect all jigs then make sure each guy who sends out jigs gets what the deserve
Because as stated before (and again I'm not saying I don't trust nobody)someone could sign up but never send anything and I don't want anything like this to happen because I want this to be fun with no bs
each guy who signs up, be it the 8 we have ,or 10 we reached out to get makes 2 jigs per particapant
I sent you address through pm
I'm making a jig I us a lot for panfish.I'm also making 18 of the same ones in hopes to get 9 others to share this with they will each get two ..me being the tenth on the list....I guess I'll make myself a couple too  ;D
so each member sends me there jigs for the swap and I'll repackage them for each member and send them everyone else's product
and I see where this might cost me a couple bucks but I think it's worth the less confusion...now if we were swapping wives please don't send them all here... ;D
also why I was looking for a little feed back because I just want to understand a time frame other than that I think I got all bugs out of our first swap because I've seen these before and we're successful
If guys don't meet the deadline then just don't send jigs...if guys over send because10 signed up and 3 never sent out I'll make sure you get a proper return..
I'm sticking with the deadline of 10 days after the tenth guy signs up
or April first ...if we only have 8 guys 14 jigs should be sent out April 1st
Icejohn this means your jigs will swap with all members on original post you will recieve two of there goto jigs for panfish
so please show us some patterns you use or one pattern and we each will be able to use two...
If you have anymore questions just ask

We have 8 guys including yourself so 14 will be needed John and you will receive 14 other jigs 2 per member involved...and at this point I see no more interest in the swap so 8 guys it is and that's firm....all guys will get jigs back if already sent  more than needed...
so as of now list is final at 8 members in the swap...thanks for all who gave it a go and wanted to share

Just found this and am in the process of tying crappie jigs popular here in north central MN. Of course we still have ice and it looks like we will for a bit yet. Do you need/want another tyer or are you complete? With the local forecast I ill be tying for the next four days and could easily tie ten or so to swap.

To the guys who already sent jigs they sent ahead and figured 10 would be in by the end..so i do have extras ,.as for guys who are sending soon they made the 14 needed and it's in the mail....if you want in I'd have to get feed back from guys who haven't sent yet...or wait and I'll get you a total on who sent extras...give me till end of this week and I'll have a firm answer....sorry
I figured ice was a factor on members willing to swap on this forum...

Title: Re: how about a panfish jig swap
Post by: SizeMatters on Apr 04, 2016, 08:40 AM
4.big guy 13021           9 tjacob

Maybe the next time we could include that with jigs we send in.......really....... for the jigs we get from this they're well worth a few bucks.

Well we are around 100 percent on members and a possitive feedback...to me that means it was a good idea and def something worth doing again...I'm open for ideas as to another swap in the works...I mentioned before a panfish fly swap?..I had fun watching these come in and to my suprise mainly got a different technique as each package came through...was cool to get things from different areas of the state's ...not a jig I wouldn't try in oneida lake for panfish..ideas for a upcoming swap?please share pictures of anything caught from the swap right here...
take care

Completely forgot to reply.  I received mine the other day and it was like Christmas lol.  Nice to see some other patterns guys are using.  This worked out great and I'm always game for another.   I don't do a lot of fly fishing but I'm sure I can come up with something

Is there a interest in another mff swap? Before I go ahead and start a swap #2 thread I'm game for suggestions...do guys want to stick with panfish theme?
One thing I def want to throw in the mix is besides sending two per member we also make one jig extra and these jigs go to the creator of this site(meaning if ten are involved we make 18+1...19 total jigs for swap and the extra goes to admin )...he has brought us together to communicate and share fishing from all over and also these swaps...why not thank him with ten nice swap items👍once I get some feed back I will start another thread and go from there
walleye jigs?
panfish jigs?
Panfish Flies?
mix and match?
Be set up the same hope to get ten guys this time(first ten are in)
If you get in and feel you won't meet a deadline just pm or reply to thread and maybe we can fill the spot with guys in order they chime in
let's talk swap #2

That was my thoughts about fly swap...would have to round it off by a species or two....
panfish flies have my vote as well...ones I do I use for icefishing ...more like a jig but could be tossed with a fly rod

I would certainly be up to doing this again. I do most of my tying during the winter months so probably wouldn't do much the rest of the year. Ice just went out on area lakes so will be trying out these patterns soon. I have tied up some of the jigs I sent in 1/100 th oz so I can dig out my fly rod to try them. I don't do a lot of walleye jigs anymore as the rocky snag-filled waters around here eat them faster than I can make them, but whatever is decided I can make something that will or has worked for me. Also happy to throw in a couple extra as well as a few bucks for the coordinator.

How about each member who is in picks there favorite species and bait they make when targeting it...if it's a jig make jigs if it's a fly make flies...as each member says he or she is in on swap they also put down species they want to represent???..this time also make a material list for each member so we know how to duplicate the tye ...so far panfish flies are top but I kind of like this idea

Panfish flies have my vote.....used to do a lot of flyfizhing for gills then last year started tying flys/bugs and poppers and realized what I've been missing.....so definitely in.
