My state of Indiana gets its rainbow eggs from a massive egg supplier in Washington state (Trout Lodge) that supplies private and public hatcheries all over the country. At least, as far as my state is concerned, it's less problematic and more cost effective than spawning their own broodfish every year. Trout Lodge is extremely biosecure while it seems federal hatcheries have had disease issues on and off. There's also the expense of heath testing your broodfish, which can be very expensive not to mention the broodfish have to be sacrificed at 60 per lot, which is already done at the egg supplier Trout Lodge. Additionally Trout Lodge has a very large gene pool which precludes a lack of genetic diversity which causes issues in the quality of the fish and hatching success.
