1 spike on a size 12 or smaller wire hook weightless under a pencil bobber triggers the finicky gills every time at least for me. no heavier then 2 lb test works the best. i usually use camo line or florocarbon leaders at least 12-30 inches long because even gills can be line shy.

I know some think Gulp is over rated but I have had amazing success with the Gulp Maggots for Gills and they last just as long as plastics.  I've never used Leeches but I've heard they work great.  My next choices would be the smallest minnows you can get your hands on or night crawlers.  I've honestly never used other artificial lures for gills so I can't speak to there effectiveness.  I like to learn new was of doing things so I'll have to try some of these other techniques.

popper bugs, small rapalas, and small crankbaits work well for the big ones and a simple worm and bobber for "numbers".

a simple worm, or waxworm on a small hook. Or catch some of the native bugs around the water

One of the best days i've had for bluegills , i was using caterpilars. They were all over the tree out front of my house. I put some in a container , and went for blues.
Amazing enough , they would take them off the surface as quick as i could put them out. Other than that , micro tubes( pink/pearl , red/yellow)

HERE IS ONE MORE FOR YA. 8) Try glow ice jigs under a bobber tipped with waxies or spikes. The gills will hammer'm. I have found that this is a great tactic year round in any kind of weather.............They ain't just for hardwater season. ;D
yep, that works well for me ;D

I like to use Garden worms, just turn over some dirt and go fishin. They work better than night crawlers here in PA.

Purple Kelly Worm with the white dots!  Make sure you get the ones with three hooks and no weed guards.  That third hook on the tail gets them everytime.
