I think real soon I was marking some huge returns on locater down about 20 ft in 32 ft depth of water.I would think they are something other than trash fish but I could be wrong.Wish I had under water camera
Don't assume anything . Once or twice I found the perch suspended in 30-40' off the pump house in St Joe. Salmon were slow and I heard a couple boats talking. Apparently when there is a good fly hatch the perch come up and feed on them. And they are very specific as to depth as shown on the graph. They won't come up or down much unless they are very active. Minnows worked for me but I imagine the flies hatching at some level and not moving much. It took me a while listening to the radio and the two cruisers talking to adjust my technique. I started out on or near bottom and came up to 18' to catch my first fish.

When does the perch fishing shut down up there?

The kings show be moving in befor too long and that usually makes the perch move out . And I have noticed it's Ben a solid perch bite for over a week now and the still are not in the low 20's yet. I'm thinking this is gonna be the last push before the skate out deep

So on my locater the 20 foot returns could of been perch schools. The echos were quite large which is why I was thinking something other than perch

The perch fishing usually remains good into Sept and Oct the last few years. In fact in 2016, 2017, and 2018 the best catch rates were Sept and Oct - better even than July or August. Just that very few people were fishing

Kings have very little to do with perch movement IMO

Once the lake turns over and then settles down a bit, the perch fishing can be incredible in Nov/Dec if you can get out. Just a matter of finding them, like always

I'm referring to them being in the 30 to 15 fow range ,. Some people don't care to catch perch in 50 and 60 fow. To when they are that far out perch season is over

I know why the people dont like to venture out to far. That lake can get rough very quick. I am one of them.

Waiting for the Official posting of all names but there were 15 boats that attended.
Biggest fish was 13 7/8 I believe , 2 - 2nd place winners with 13 3/4  the official posting with names will be out soon.
It was a good turnout. Big swells but fishable. Great time had by all. Fish were scattered most of the day. Water has really cooled off.

I want to thank  everyone that came and fished the 10th annual Michiana Walleye Perch Derby. Congrats to Mark, Bill and Randy for catching the biggest perch @ 13-7/8 and 2nd place to teams of Mike & Jim and Tom and Joe both with a 13-3/4. Congrats also to  Mark, Bill and Randy for the winning "BEST 3" total inches of 40-3/8. Great turn out of 15 boats and 37 fishermen and 1 fisherwoman. Weather wasn't the best but fish were caught.Hope to see everyone next year.
