I've Ben asking around with all my charter buddies and they has all said they haven't seen anyone on the perch grounds . And that Everytime it would get to be right conditions we get a big north blow and messes things up

I am hoping that the first part of July the perch will be around. Till them I will make some money. Wanted to go today but the weather called for rain all weekend. That is the way mother nature changes. Now it is nice and all my partners have plans. Oh well, guess it is time to cut the grass. LOL

Thanks for all the replies,I have perch fever and the small lakes around me are way to busy with skiers and pleasure boats to chase them .Hopefully July will settle weather patters down and bring them in

To all of those who live north of the river. (that is the talk from yonder). Hopefully, there will be enough of that gold to share with all who go for them this year. It would be nice to stock some in the freezer. Haven't had any in freezer for a few years. This warm weather should help. 80's for the next couple weeks should bring them closer to shore. GET READY. LOL

Sunday we fished out of St Joe, still a long ride in a boat to where we found them.
Monday afternoon we fished New Buffalo and only found 1 but were exploring, we marked alot.
Mich City area has been doing good also, every day is different for them perch but with a south wind its a great time regard less.
Had friends that got 20 out of Mich City area yesterday, but have friends out of St Joe and Mich City this morning and everything is slow so far today.
Good luck , watch the wind and the weather and you'll have a great time.

WTG SPOOLED, You are making me jealous. Good luck Mike, let us know how they are. I hope to be on the water Saturday. Wouldn't you know if the winds are suppose to change out of the north. I don't like to take my boat out on north winds. I have been disappointed many times by launching the boat only to find out that once hitting the actual lake it was much too rough for me and my boat. I like 1 foot or less. Call me crazy, but cautious. Will have to listen to noaa's to watch the wave action. Keeping my fingers crossed.

LOOKS LIKE THE LAKE WILL LAY DOWN LATER TODAY. HOPE THE BLOW DIDNT PUSH THE PERCH OUT DEEP. IF ANYONE MAKES IT OUT TODAY, GOOD LUCK. HAS ANYONE LAUNCHED FROM MICHIGAN CITY? CURIOUS IF THE PERCH ARE BEING CAUGHT BY NUMBERS THERE AS WELL. MY GUESS IS THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. WITH THE WEATHER I KNEW THAT PORTAGE WAS A CLOSER RUN TO SAFETY IF THE LAKE TURNS QUICK. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I LAUNCHED IN PORTAGE IN YEARS AND IT WAS SWEET.

Went out today and was not in a rush.  Had several little things to tie up here at home.  Got on the water about 10:30 out of Portage and headed east to the area in front of the Indiana Dunes State Park pavilion.  Fished as shallow as 8' and with the Ipilot down, worked my way out to 50' with nothing.  Mosied back to the doughnut area and repeated the pattern with the same results-- nothing.  Fished some old memories on top of the reef and the trough at the reef with nothing and ended up back at the moutn of the ditch.  Called my son and he told me the other day, he did well in 14' of water in front of Ogden Dunes.  I tried it and skunked again and then realized an old man like me had been sitting out a ways the entire day.  So, I went the same distance out and about 1000 yards west of him and it was 51' of water.  I fished it for about 90 minutes and ended up with 9.  Two were true keepers at 10" and the rest needed to be stretched.  Again, when you are pulling fish from 50' of water, you're keeping what you catch as they come up with their bladders/bellies in their mouths.  So, I was grateful for 9 and needed to be home about 5.  Overall, a great day to be on the water.  Really appreciate the bimini top on my boat as the older I get, the less I like to fry in the sun.  There was also a healthy crop of pesky flies buzzing around.  I need to put a fly swatter on the boat.  The fishing should improve tomorrow with the weather being a bit more stable for a longer period of time...

I hear you on those flies with the white spot on their backs. I call them nuclear flies. They bite worse than a horse fly, going thru blue jeans and socks like you had nothing on at all. I tried the different types of misquito sprays and found out the only one that WORKS, is the 100 percent deet. I know a lot of people dont like to use it, but, it works trust me. I dont leave home without it. Last Saturday we were lucky no flies. I think they come out in the later hours. We had left by 8;30 am.

On the charter boats we take a rag and spray it with fly spray you would use on a horse and it works pretty good. Or if you have on board water Dawn dish soap helps. We wash the back deck down with dawn very once and awhile and they stay away

Slez has a sun block lotion. Also has a bug repellent in it. Works wonders! Like $9 a tube. Cant remember the name of it, but it was in a white tube with peach/pink labeling on it.

Stuff seriously worked wonders, been on many trips guys getting tore up and i didnt have a bug on me, everyone asked to borrow some once we realized what was going on.

16 or 17 out of Portage today in 50' of water... A few nice 10" but most were 8-9 inchers -- indeed, very warm and fished with a 91 year old friend that loves to perch fish.  Today was a good day to have a bimini top...

With the winds coming from the north the next couple of days I am hoping that come Saturday the lake is back the way it was a week ago, with perch scattered everywhere close to shore.  It is the only day I could get on this week, hope it is productive. I am guessing the Armada will be out. LOL.....
Title: Re: Lake michigan
Post by: abishop on Jul 11, 2019, 06:21 PM
So what does the census report. Do you think that with the winds from the north would move the perch into deeper waters. Or, would you think that by Saturday they will be shallow again. I am inclined to believe that we need 3 or 4 good days with a south wind to get them settled down. Do you think maybe try fishing elsewhere for something different or just wait till next weekend to hope for another good perch outing. Just wondering that others are thinking?????
Title: Re: Lake michigan
Post by: Spooled85 on Jul 11, 2019, 07:47 PM
The north winds bring cold water and waves . And when the water temp goes from 74 to 66 they disappear. And they do t like to get beat up in the shalllow water by the waves we have Ben getting. They had small craft advisory today and rip current warnings. I have full intentions in being out Saturday but not now. I think it will be a waist. And I'm not one that likes to clean 7 to 10 in perch . Because at the depth of 50 ' where they are now makes their air bladders come out there mouths and there for you have to keep everything you catch . Jsut my 2 cents

Post by: LundProv on Jul 11, 2019, 09:53 PM
Would encourage you to enjoy another lake this Saturday.  I fished two days this week after last weekend north spell and caught fish but as the previous post states, they were in 50' of water and not real active.  There are plenty of options to go elsewhere and maybe mix it up a bit and try a body of water you have been thinking about but just have not taken the time to explore.  You know you are gonna have fun where ever you go...

Looks the like north blow wasn't as bad as it could have been.

https://glbuoys.glos.us/45170

As of 8 AM CST Friday morning, its 71 on the surface and 70 degrees all the way down to 20 feet. Then 62 degrees at 36 feet and 55 degrees at 43 feet.

Water column is set up ok for them to be in that 20-35 foot depth range... only question is that has it settled enough from the recent unstable conditions to let them move back in and get set up

I'm guessing by the weekend it could be ok

Slow today out of the ditch. Picked away at fish, but size wasnt tablefare.

Marked monster pods of fish in 28 foot of water. Lots of debris marked in shallow 10-15 foot.

Picked a couple dinks in 50 foot. Tried other areas 40-52 to the west with nothing to show or marked.

Tomorrow is an east wind.....

This next week looks like weather to fire the perch up again. Now just a waiting game, couple days, go time again.

Great conditions out there today! I know we're talking perch on here but I took the kayak out for 3 hours and smallmouth/largemouth fished all around the breakwalls and lighthouse pier. Fishing was bad and I got rained on a little bit at the end but it was nice getting the kayak on the big pond. Only landed one fish and it was a rock bass...

Lake looked very nice last two days. Suppose to blow out of the north tomorrow, then it looks good for the weekend.

Blowing out of the north at 5 mph. Thats not going to hurt anything. Fish were on fire today when u located the school.

Sunday looks like your good till about 3-4 p.m., if sundays forecast sticks true.

Feel free to p.m. me with any details you may want, ive been fishing the perch hard. I plan on going saturday also

On the way out the ditch there were 3 big boats coming back in. Saying there were big rollers out there. Knowing that I would only be a few hundred yards out I had to try it since I paid 21 dollars 4 bait and another 10 to launch. Within the first 2 minutes I had a fish on. I was very concerned with the rollers. Had to b 4 footers. So I just made sure I was trolling into them so as to not catch one over my transom. GAME OVER IF THAT HAPPENED. We ended up boating over 50 in 2 1/2 hours. Kept 30. They were larger on average this week. Calling for north winds to come in today in the afternoon. Have to watch NOAA to c if tomorrow is doable. First 1 getting bait today. When we left there was over 65 boats fishing in the general area. Fish were everywhere. The best depth 4 us was 16 to 18 fow. GET YA SUM.

What size boat is needed out there on calm days? Would you be pushing it with a 16' deep modified v john boat?
Title: Re: Lake michigan
Post by: abishop on Jul 21, 2019, 09:42 AM
I have seen 14 foot John boats out there on calm south wind days. This lake is rougher than all other great lakes and the oceans. I was told this first hand by a tug boat captain who has been all over the world. I have a 16 deep v with 40 horse and I am still over cautious. I like the lake to have less than 2 foot waves 4 me 2 b comfortable. Just me, I dont push it....

It's not just the waves that you have to watch out for the bigger boats and their wakes too ! The big pleasure boaters do not care if your anchored and how small you are . I've seen boats rolled over by big boats that didn't pay attention . An or had the common sense to put the nose of the boat at a 45 to the wake coming at them. If you go just use common sense and watch for others because they don't always watch for you

Title: Re: Lake michigan
Post by: Spooled85 on Jul 23, 2019, 07:13 PM
In my opinion I wouldn't bother . Three and a half days of north winds . We will need more then two days or southern winds to bring them back in shallow. I'm sure the perch will be there Saturday but they're going to be scattered and I would say 40 + feet. Hopefully we don't get anymore big blows from Thursday on and by mid next week to next weekend they will be back where they was this past weekend

Oh heck I've had them so close they ran over my lines. And had people purposely strafe me because they don't want me anchored where I'm at.  The 200 foot rule for distance from shoreline  for skiers gets totally ignored.

My dads uncle took a guy off of his skies with a cane pole once out on the mississinewa.  I guess this guy kept buzzing them while they were anchored up fishing for crappie.  Uncle Lester finally had enough and drilled him with a cane pole the next time he came past. This was back in the day before all the pc crap nowadays.  He saw a problem and fixed it.

Fished with a guy who spoiled 100# test on a pole with a big bobber. If boats and skiers buzzed to close to us he would cast far enough out so the boat would run over his line and rap up in the prop. Boat dead in the water and we would move to our next spot.

The west winds were tough today. Started out by the doughnut with everyone else. Only saw a couple boats catching them. ALL SMALL. So went to the ditch mouth. Started picking them up in 30 feet. Kept 30 a lot of sorting. Stayed till around 11. Need a couple more days with a south wind to bring them back to shore. FUN FUN FUN. Ended up with 6 doubles today. As usual, the largestfish of the day flipped off at the boat 14+. LOL

Everyone I talked to today said they was all small.and if you notice the boats was scattered from 25 to 45 fow . The fish are too scattered rite now usually all the boats fish the same depth in a giant line . When the boats are scattered so are the fish but it does mean that they are moving back in.and will be anytime before they start to get into the big pods

Wallin, did you find any today?
Fished from around 8am to 2pm and it was slow.
Lots of dinks, I didn't keep anything under 9 inchs I guess.
Ice Cleat fished with me a got a few nicer fish, he had 9 or 10 I believe.
Nice breeze kept it cooler all day, 29 to 30 ft is where we found  the bigger fish.
Talked to other boats that got limits but I only keep smaller fish if they swallowed the hook.
To hard to clean lol. Fat head minnows are what i use and throw in a few crappie minnows.

The other rigs are mostly from Bass pro in the crappie area made by the name on the package. Theres tons of drop shot rigs I use mostly for drifting using the dead stick lazy guy method, lol.

Question ? My personal preference on perch is to eat them skin on.of course descaled . To me they taste so much better that way and cook better . BUT scaling is a mess and a pain in the butt ! That being said I'm considering buying a descaler ..... Any of you use on on perch ect..  and what's your thoughts on them are they worth the money . I figured as much as I perch fish the big lake it might be a good investment.... And when I say descaler I mean a fish tumbler
Title: Re: Lake michigan
Post by: wallin on Jul 29, 2019, 11:01 AM
I try to keep them big enough to fillet.

There good any way you fix them.

To me I prefer even the big ones skin on . I've heard some guys say they use the slick skin scaler and they work great and I we heard other say no..... I usually clean 40 plus at a time by myself so if it is worth the 230 bucks I may invest into one of it's gonna save me the extra mess time and stabbed fingertips then it may be worth it

Ya I've heard that if you don't pull this out at the perfect time that can happen . A buddy of mine bought a little plastic deal to scale them and he said it works great. Makes a mess but works good . Maybe I'll give that a try first
Title: Re: Lake michigan
Post by: abishop on Aug 01, 2019, 06:12 PM
Back before we learned to filet them we would use a skinner to peel off the skin, and when cleaning the crappie we had nailed old pop bottle caps onto a handle. This worked really well. Just gave them scales a real fly, they were everywhere. Had to do the cleaning outside. Have you noticed the batter doesn't stay on the skin side of your fish????

Do you think the northern winds will shut the fish down for Monday? Forecast looks great for Monday but I didn't know what the wind Sunday would do to the fish.

Lake was like ice this am. Started off slow then we found a massive pod. Ended up with 24. Couldn't find the pod again to claim our limit. After looking for over 1 hour and only boating another 1 fish we pulled the plug. Beautiful day 2 b out.

Long day, 68 keepers for 3 of us today. Yea that lake was slick this morning. Beautiful day.
28 to 30 ft with that spot lock was the ticket. Grandson got 2 perch over 14 inchs.
Sorted thru lots of small fish, used 8 dozen minnows.
Al did you go out of N B today?

No stayed by ditch. Only fished for a few hours. 31 foot 4 me was best. Had plenty of bait to chum afterwards. A shame throwing away at that cost. Need to find a stainless tank to keep minnows alive thru heat.

Should be great tomorrow and sat and sun too.
1/2 ft to 1 ft, north breeze always feels good out there.
I'll be out there in a gray and blue Alumacraft.
Not sure yet where were starting east or west, just keep moving till you find them.
I love my spotlock.
Good Luck, I keep moving till I find a steady pod of fish that are biting.

Left the house early for the day trip to the big lake. After stopping for bait in Michigan city I changed directions and headed to NB since I already have an annual out of state for Michigan.  Got on as the sun was only up a short time. Went out to 40fow banged 4 right off the bat' smallest being 10 1/2 . Then nothing...so I moved in to 32fow and hit 2 more quality 11s. Then nothing for at least an hr... moved around d a bit and hit a couple 9s dbl... made a mark on the helix and proceeded to do a controlled drift with my trolling motor. Drifted off course and hit a couple more and made a mark. After another mark on the helix I had a little triangle on the screen and I pinned down on them. Came home with 25... kept about 5 9s to make the limit...top fish of the day was 11 3/4. Good day and still made the 2.5 hr drive home in ti.e for football practice.

In my experience, and I think conventional wisdom as well, shiners usually outfish fatheads considerably

You just have to ask yourself do you want to pay 5 bucks or 20? Eeinghburghs in Demotte at 1 dollar a dozen or 1.25 for fatheads. Cheapest around. I used to buy by the pound when Marvels was in Business. Think they were like 8.50 to 12 dollars. Enough for 2 boats and then some. 12 to 15 dozen.... I agree baby roaches or shiners will catch more fish. AND THEY DO LIKE THE LARGER ONES. I WAS SURPRISED. Anyone get out today?

Don't assume anything . Once or twice I found the perch suspended in 30-40' off the pump house in St Joe. Salmon were slow and I heard a couple boats talking. Apparently when there is a good fly hatch the perch come up and feed on them. And they are very specific as to depth as shown on the graph. They won't come up or down much unless they are very active. Minnows worked for me but I imagine the flies hatching at some level and not moving much. It took me a while listening to the radio and the two cruisers talking to adjust my technique. I started out on or near bottom and came up to 18' to catch my first fish.

The kings show be moving in befor too long and that usually makes the perch move out . And I have noticed it's Ben a solid perch bite for over a week now and the still are not in the low 20's yet. I'm thinking this is gonna be the last push before the skate out deep

The perch fishing usually remains good into Sept and Oct the last few years. In fact in 2016, 2017, and 2018 the best catch rates were Sept and Oct - better even than July or August. Just that very few people were fishing

Kings have very little to do with perch movement IMO

Once the lake turns over and then settles down a bit, the perch fishing can be incredible in Nov/Dec if you can get out. Just a matter of finding them, like always

Waiting for the Official posting of all names but there were 15 boats that attended.
Biggest fish was 13 7/8 I believe , 2 - 2nd place winners with 13 3/4  the official posting with names will be out soon.
It was a good turnout. Big swells but fishable. Great time had by all. Fish were scattered most of the day. Water has really cooled off.

Congrats to Mark, Bill and Randy for catching the biggest perch @ 13-7/8 and 2nd place to teams of Mike & Jim and Tom and Joe both with a 13-3/4. Congrats also to  Mark, Bill and Randy for the winning "BEST 3" total inches of 40-3/8. Great turn out of 15 boats and 37 fishermen and 1 fisherwoman. Weather wasn't the best but fish were caught.Hope to see everyone next year.

You just have to hunt around for them big schools.
Usually 15 to 30 ft. look for the others boats.
They will be around awhile we all hope.

That storm made the lake roll a bit today. Didn’t go far and managed dinner and a sunburn. Beautiful morning if you dont mind surfing

I've been fooled more than once by mother nature so i always respect that big water and watch and check
the winds and waves. Besafe and find them perch, planning on NB but MC as a backup if them waves are to much, its showing 4ft swells overnight but smaller waves late morning.  Just besafe and it should get better as the day goes.
Besafe and watch the winds and you'll be OK.

Things change by the minute out there that’s for sure.  I was very impressed with the way my 17 ft boat handled but I guess being as wide as a Sea Ray doesn’t hurt. Just stayed close to port and the perch were right inside the mud line anyway.

Worked for them. They were in 15 to 20. Related to the mud line but we’re also scattered outside of it. They likes the 68 to 70 degree water

Went to NB and she was rough , waited till 9 :30 to launch because of rough swells, alot of boats came back in but we took our  time and motored thru the swells, it was a terrible day as far as the bite but we had a good time. We left around 3pm with only 2 keepers, friends stayed till dark and they finally turned on. Water was nice when we left.
Gotta get out when you can.

Just gotta get on them when the shallow perch bite starts it lasts for quite awhile . And we pound them double like crazy and alot of 13 to 15 inch perch . And never run to Michigan.they can keep there expensive license

I am inclined to think like you. I think that with the winds being consistent that perch once found should be in that same depth range within a few feet reguardless whether in New Buffalo, Michigan City or Portage area. I havent heard anything all year further west???? Just  my 2 cents. I do like the larger bag limits in Michigan. Might give it a try one time and only pay for a 1 day license. Just to know where to go in case??????? Have yet to catch any monsters yet all year, but I prefer the 9 inch, they taste better. Would like a 15 some day, or even 16. I know they are in there but I have never got anything larger than a 14 1/2 inch in the 50 years fishing Lake Michigan.....

Yep , and this yr has been a good one for me atkeast even tho I haven't been out in a good bit. I got my fill and have some nice bags in the freezer so I can have a good perch meal this winter.  I would like to get out at least one more time for them. I was going to go Saturday but got called in for work . Now season is fixing to take off so we will see if I can make one more outing
