RIP Smokey Smith
« on: Aug 03, 2005, 12:31 PM »
I've just read that the last surviving Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross  passed away this morning.  A veteran of WW2 and Korea, he was perhaps the most colorful character highlighted in this years rememberance of WW2.  During the Italian campaign when he was a Seaforth Highlander he almost singlehandedly fought off 3 German tanks, 2 self propelled guns and 30 German soldiers.
For those who don't know, the Victoria Cross doesn't come cheap, to the extent that most who recieve it do so posthumously.  We will remember him.

With a PIAT.....   :o  Those things had a range about as good as a slingshot, and were just about as effective against tanks.

A true hero that I fear future generations will not understand...
