Title: Winter Flounder
Post by: Knot there yet on Apr 09, 2019, 09:11 AM
I went off Swampscott Sunday 47 degrees water. Buddy caught a crab and that was it. Try again this weekend

Still a little early but you never. I'll be getting ready when I get back from vacation. Got to restock the freezer.

They were unable to stop inshore draggers this year...that fishery will cease to exist soon while the draggers scoop up the spawning flounder...

They don't stop with flounder, inshore haddock spots on plum island get slammed too,you know the draggers have been through when you stop catching skates..

You aren't kidding Joe...they slaughter the fluke too.  Anyone ever seen miles of dead stripers off of cape cod when they have to toss the "bycatch"

Its unreal.

Meanwhile I'm fishing for trout raised in circular concrete tanks.  I don't think we could save ourselves if we tried.

I guess I'll take up carp fishing when the stripers disappear.

I was hoping you didnt bring the fluke up because its my go to species all summer and it erks me that they can drag so close to shore. Like Joe said with the skate, I can tell you within 5-10 minutes if a dragger swiped the bottom on one of my go to spots. The difference can be 100 fish in an hour with 4 guys on the boat down to just a handful.

Do you mean the grey tide of stripes? Seen it many of times. Sad thing to witness

I've watched the mid water herring trawls in the fall discard plenty of bass as well...then watch "sportsman" scoop them up to bring to market. Vicious circle..

On the bright side, I winched ( figuratively)the Princess warrior out of her winter home between the pines and garage  and onto the driveway,I'll put her on the stands in the morning and prep,  so I can paint the bottom Sunday... still have to install the Pantopix live scope and she'll be ready for the invasion of silvers  ( haddock) as they enter the spawning grounds.

I got it installed Saturday, had to upgrade the software on my Garmin echomap plus 94sv for it to recognize it, the "black box" is big and heavy, I had to mount it under the console because my dash is a little "full"  I mounted the transducer on my trolling  motor as it mostly will be used while I'm bass ( striped) fishing the marshes and beach front...now if the weather will only cooperate...soon as the ice  goes out on winni or I go for haddock I'll give it a try...

I'm sure I will, probably cost me a lot more in gas because if I don't see anything on the screen I'm apt to go to fishier pastures..

I'm glad that box found a good home!.. I have the rear chains off of that Polaris too.. I need to find a home for them, they don't fit the can am... I've got a moose 2 compartment saddle bag, ill give ya that next time I see ya if you want it.

I need to get my carbs cleaned, get the mount for my panoptix and another ducer.  Looking to repower as well.  Been staring at a number of 115-150 four strokes.

4 strokes are over rated.. ;D..
If and that's a big if, my 2004
115 mercury 2 stroke ever dies, I'd replace it with an e tech...

If I knew how to work carbs Id be fine with my 1990 looper.  It was great as long as the carbs were clean even started well in temps below 25...

My buddy had a brand new 2017 e tec.  Thing flied for 2 weeks then sheared the flywheel bolts...that was sad.

those engines are among the best merc/mariner ever built, the ONLY problem with them were there were not enough people that understood how to set them up properly the first time..

I still have the engine block to that one I gave you the lower unit from, it had 125lbs compression in each hole, I just couldn't see scrapping it...I might have the entire ignition system, less stator and flywheel that got scrapped when the flywheel disintegrated, making me buy the newer motor..

Nice work on the flatties!. Its 4am and I am heading out to beat the weekend googans. I've been in NH on freshwater all week it's time to add some sodium to my H2O and catch some fluke.

Pogies boats already working hard around plum island,  I've seen a few schools of pogies, but not lime last year but mackerel are as thick as sand fleas the last 5 dsys.

Are the mackerel all small or do any of them have enough size to hit the smoker Joe? Its a 2 hour tow but I am looking for some edible mackerel.

If I come into some edible size ones I'll let you know. I fish for them almost every weekend at the east end weather permitting and it had been really slow with most of them tinker's. Every once in a while I'll get a couple dozen edible size ones.

Thanks Joe and T.

My old man has been hounding me to get some fresh mackerel. I cannot get myself to buy it from a fish store. We hot smoke them and then eat them on a piece of fresh rye bread with a tad bit of butter spread.

You live lining them in the canal?  Things are hard to keep alive but using them is almost like cheating.  Although it is googan central, jigging them off of the fishing pier is quite productive.  Once you hook a striper on the pier the madness ensues.

We live lined them in the rip at the east end in my boat with no luck. I dont use them from shore in the canal they work but in my experience the time they do work artificials will work at the same time. I also will never set foot on that pier its not my style of fishing and it only takes one bad apple there. They stay alive really good in a live well.

Weather conditions permitting, I'll be getting some for bait Saturday,  then shuffling lobster pots and fishing for flounder. ..the local ramp is close to my marina, but most likely will be a zoo..I'd tell you to come in my boat, but if I move 4 or five traps, I run out of room fast.

I was going to try moving pots last night,  but the relentless east wind and fog kept me inside, the aforementioned conditions not good on a dropping tide. .

Jumping in with you does no good,
I have a pot hauler, and all the "secret" spots on my GPS... if I'm not moving traps I've got plenty of room..

I'm pulling the boat Saturday and bringing it to Maine with me next week...

Saco

Had some fun days floating down the Saco in college.  The paddle on Sunday was always a joy after the festivities the day/night before.
