Although this is not ideal lighting, here are a few pictures of a hummingbird. Enjoy!

Hummingbirds are very neat, fascinating birds. Not many people know that there are different types, 4 species of them come around my house in colorado quite often.
Also, one time a hummingbird flew into our sliding-glass door. It looked dead. So I went out and got it in my hands, and suddenly, it jumped up and started beating its wings and flew off! And I always heard they died if their wings stopped beating, well I now know that that is a myth.

very nice, when I get home I'll post a nice hummingbird picture with bright red and green colors. Please check back after 9-10pm.

Yep, this is in Mississipi. I've had visitors for about 1 1/2 weeks. Now I think I have at least 3 different birds. I'm going to try and get some better pics but most of the time the feeder is silouetted against the sky. They have not started fighting yet, that's when the real aerial fireworks begin!
I've rescued birds that have flown into windows before and seen them both dead and stunned. We had a cat that was an amazing acrobat and every now and then he'd score and we'd try to get the birds before he killed them. They're easily one of my favorite birds, their skill, tricks and intelligence never ceases to amaze me. It's nice to be able to view them up close.
These pictures were taken from a digital video camera. The slow motion video is even better.
I also like gardening for hummingbirds but I can't do much of that in an apartment. The feeder is hanging from a fuschia hanging basket. Below it is a very healthy pineapple sage plant and I'll post pictures of it when it blooms (soon). This is by far my favorite hummingbird plant: Cardinal Flower

There are two varieties you can purchase at nurseries, a native green variety and a European variety (I believe) with burgundy leaves and slightly larger blooms. I prefer the native variety. I remember the first time I saw it in the wild, I was 14 years old, cruising down a bike path on my 10-speed (with my fishing rod), which was sandwiched between a large creek on one side and a swamp on the other. I saw this one spire of the brightest red plant I'd ever seen leaping out of the brown marsh grass, and a hummingbird was feeding. It was the first time I'd ever seen the plant and the bird, and I screeched to a halt to watch the hummer feed. I was enthralled! After that I created a hummingbird garden at our house in Maryland and soon we had several tiny visitors.

That's cool camo! Here are a few more. I tried to get him with my digital still camera, but the pics didn't come out as well as I'd expected. I shot this one with the digital video, but the light had faded. I'll get some good one's tomorrow.

Yep, lobelia cardinalis. I collected 10 plants from the wild by dividing them during the winter and taking 1/2. I was able to get over 50 plants out of that bunch over the next 3 years. We kept them in low lying areas where it was very damp.
My favorites (in order)
Cardinal Flower
Trumpet Creeper (vine)
Trumpet Honeysuckle (vine)
Bee balm
Pineapple sage
salvia (perennial- several varieties)
salvia (annual)
touch-me-not
Pretty much anything red, or orange and trumpet shaped.

This particular species has wings that beat so fast that you can't even see them...

Not the best pictures in the world, but this little bugger decided that my Davis weather instrument was the best place for a lookout!! The tower is ~ 20ft tall from the roof.
