30+ yrs ago I was volunteer fireman.
We had a guy in the Dept that knew how to clean and cook them.  Really dark and hearty soup.
Loved it.

This one was about 2 feet across. Caught it while bullhead fishing.

Happily, he spit the hook. Too gnarly for me to consider eating.

Thank god.
They are nasty and gnarly.
Also loaded with bacteria.

I'm going to build a trap soon to remove a very large one from one of my ponds. If anybody wants one in my area it's yours. It's illegal here to relocate them, as to the nearby river allegedly because they can spread disease. I don't buy it as the turtle would be from the same watershed and they move around a lot,  and they can't be too diseased if the live as long as they do.

Im a big reptile guy I have never heard of a turtle spreading anything except salmonella to himans who keep them in dirty tanks as for relocating them I don't think you can legally relocate any animal and there are rules for taking snappers for food not sure if you can still take diamond back terrapins as for nasty they actually make good pets when raised from babies and are very cool looking when not covered in moss

ate a lot of turtles when I was a kid .... they say there is 7 flavors of meat in a turtle ,my personal opinion isn't exactly that but they weren't bad the soup was good and fried wasn't bad either

They must travel long ways. Had a snapper crossing in my road the other day and there isn't any water within a half mile from there.

We used to hook and line them years ago to make soup.  My brother paid his rent in college selling them to restaurants a few decades ago.  We were in Arizona a few years ago and came on a terrapin in the road.  We stopped to move him out and saw he had been hit in the past.  Someone had repaired his shell with what looked like JBWeld and obviously he survived.

Turtle chowder is awesome. Haven't had it in many years. My brother used to catch them and sell them to restaurants when we were kids. I would never hit one with the car. Saw a huge one crossing the road on the way home from work last week and traffic was stopped both ways to let him cross.

Agreed. I recently saw one run over on the shoulder. Someone had to swerve to hit it. Idiots!

Hitting animals with a car is just malicious and a waste. If your not going to eat it or make sure it goes to use, don’t kill it. Granted, nothing goes to waste, something is going to eat it. When I catch invasive fish, if I’m not taking them home, they become Eagle  or turtle food.

Better check the regulations. There is a season for taking snapping turtles. Only legal means are gun or bow. Guy got busted locally for killing one on a golf course with a golf club.
