Well I never got into fly fishing but when I worked for Genesee Vally Taxidermy in Caledonia I decided that I was going to buy every outdoor thing I could before I got married so I bougt a Cortland GRF100 8'6" with a Cortland CG Cassette Professional Size #1 reel along with as may dry flies and nimphs that I could get into a fly box. They are all hand tied by a local guy in Caledonia specifically for the Oatka and spring creek. Don't know if it is good or bad but it worked for the creeks in Caledonia. Did ok with it on Squaw Lake & Lowes Lake in the Adirondacks as well. With the help of a few guys I do believe that I will be doing more fly tieing and fishing this summer.

My favoriate fly rod is my Fenwick #806 graphite 6 wt. I have other graphite rods, a few very old bamboo and some fiberglass rods that I haven't used in years. I have flyfished and tied flys for 30+ years, so have quite a collection of all "type of junk" (as my wife would say).
-
When I was stationed in Bosnia with the Army I ordered an Orvis 7 1/2' Superfine 4 weight with a Battenkill 3/4 disc drag reel. I was the only soldier traveling around a combat zone with a flyrod! ;D
I love this rod for most fishing situations. It performs perfectly on smaller streams and if you take it into larger rivers a 17" trout will feel like a trophy tarpon!
I also have an older St. Croix 5/6 weight with a Pflueger Medalist reel. I recently purchased an Orvis 6 weight 9' western trout rod from I guy I met on a camping trip. I put an Orvis Rocky Mountain 5/6 disc drag reel on that one. Wasn't sure if I would like the reel, but it works out okay because it has a cartridge on it and I can change lines very quickly.
For fly line I prefer Cortland 444 series lines.
I also have an older Orvis Battenkill split bamboo, but that doesn't leave the house.
Still looking for a good 8 or 9 weight for steelhead...

Had to do an inventory to answer this .
I have built most of my rods from Lamiglas graphite blanks.
3/4 wt 6'-6" hand made
4/5 wt 7'-6" hand made
5/6 wt 7' hand made (special SmallmouthBass Rod)
5/6 wt 8' 6" Pflueger IM7
9/10 wt 9' Hand made Lamiglas Tube Fiberglas(pike/largemouth rod)
5 wt 3 pc #59 South Bend Split Bamboo, Restored to original condition with 2 tips...

9' 6WT CORTLAND i use it for jumbo gills and stream trout---dry fly fishing
-
I have several fly fishing outfits but my favorite would have to be my Orvis 1 wt ! ;)
-
Doug,
Do you use that to catch the minnows in the bucket?
I've never handled a 1wt. Must feel like a feather and a thread.
RG
-
RG using a 1 wt is no different than using a 4 wt - just have to downsize. You need a little more control when using larger flies or poppers but it can be managed. The thrill though is when you catch a stocked trout, bluegill or sunny and the rod bows and line is taken out. To someone who doesn't know what you are using it appears you have a monster hooked ! And to be truthful you mostly are catching 7"-10" stockies from small creeks/rivers anyway. I have caught (and released) 20" brown trout on this setup out in Pa. (Ressica Falls) and had a blast. ;D
-
Doug - that 1 wt must be a real pleasure to fish with. I have used a 3 wt on stocked brookies in the 8-10" class and they always feel like trophy fish. Light tackle, be it fly or spinning, is always a fun challenge!
-
Cider you're right it truly is a pleasure to fish with. I took a long, hard look several years back at where I was fishing and what I was catching. The 4 wt setup just didn't seem challenging until you got into a larger fish. I splurged and went with the 1 wt and now even a descent sunny or gill is fun.

HMMMMM!
I'm already looking for blanks. My birthday's coming up fast and My Wonderful bride is getting me that 3 wood I've been hesitating on....Happy Birthday To Me....Happy Birthday To Me!!
I've even got a nice old Pfleuger Medalist to put on it.
What type of line do you use Doug? Level, Rocket, WF?
RG
-
I've settled on the weight forward for several reasons. With the lite line it aids in casting further. It also aids when using small poppers and less aerodynamic flies. Also using the 1 wt line on windy days I find it's easier to punch the line into the wind with WF.
-
Oh, I agree completely on the WF line. I think this is the best of all the line types for the reasons you have stated here. Particularly when you get into the lighter weight lines.
-
St. Croix Ultra is number one in my book 9 foot 5 weight for panfish ;D
-
I have a 4 wt Browning rod with a Loop Evotech reel, and an Orvis 6 wt with an orvis reel. Also, I'm currently saving up for a new Redington NTQ 10 wt for salmon and pike. I use the 4 wt most of the time, and the Orvis is the first and last rod I will ever buy from them. Both of my rods have Cortland 555 line on them, because no other line company makes anything even remotely comperable.
-
8 1/2 ft 5wt Sage
7 1/2 ft 4 wt StCroix
-
9Ft 6Wt Orvis w/ wonderline
-
9 1/2 ft 7 wt for steelhead,Browns, Bass ect..

Well i had a Abu Garcia 7 wt , 7' 6"..I left it behind in a River one day...By the time i remembered it was a few days late..Needless to say it was someone else's score..Now i bought last year was a Berkly Enforcer 7-8 wt 8',6" With a Plufluger Medilist Reel i bought off of EBay...(the reel off of ebay that is" I have read all these Custome Blanks...Any for sale? OR MAde to order?
-
Ive got a two 9ft 5/6 wts that I built and 2 8wt 9 footers I built for salmon and steelies.
Any rod builders out there looking for a "high end" blank at basement prices should check out Cabelas IM7 blanks. They run 40 bucks and if you buy 3 or more they take 5 bucks off each blank. I have made rods with orvis, loomis, and may other blanks, these are as nice as any. Built three 9 ft 8 wts for my father, myself and a friend last year. We put em threough the rigors of many salmon at the Salmon River last fall with no problems or complaints. Im making a 6' 6" 3wt for a friend the blank should be here soon....
I cant bring myself to buy a 3-500 dollar reel just yet. I have a couple of Okumas that are great and last year I picked up a Pflueger Trion and it is awesome. Also have a medalist that is good also.
-
My Plfluger Medilist Reel Is about 10 years old or more I picked it up at Ebay for about 18 bucks American..Which worked out to like 5000,000 Canadian...LOL ANyhow i like the feel of it and the sound...SO you said you Make em do you sell them also?
-
Germ - I make quite a few of em and have sold a few. Mostly make em for friends and relatives. I have three more rods to make this winter then im done till next winter. I own and run a resturant/bar on a golf course. That eats up most of my time spring thru fall. Id possible be talked into making one next winter for ya but thats a ways off. Sorry :)

I fish with a 3/4 quadrate split bamboo that was handmade by a buddy of mine,
specifically made to fish spring creek in Mumford, NY
also a 5 wt hex that he made.
I also use a G Loomis GL3 5wt for most of my trout needs.
The bamboo is pretty awesome......but compared to graphite, it is heavy.

7' 6" 2 wt. Winston
8' 4/5 wt. Powell
9' 5wt. Greywolf
10' 7 wt. Thomas & Thomas
9' 7/8 wt. St. Croix Legend
9' 10wt. T&T
-
8' 3 weight i built(cedar blank with recoil guides)
Orvis T3 9' 4 weight tip fles (dry flies)
Orvis T3 9' 5 weight for humphing/streamers/dries
Orvis T3 9' 6 weight for large dries/streamers
9' 7 weight for streamers and larger fish (cabela's SLi blank that I made)
older St. Croix 9' 5 weight
all my rods have large arbor reels and now that I'm used to those it's hard to fish with anything else.
-
Orvis TLS Power Matrix 9 ft 5 WT, w/ an Orvis Battenkill Mid Arbor reel.
-
I fish TFO's (Temple Fork Outfitters). I like the 9'ers and have several from 5wt to 8wt for the stripers
-
g-loomis GLX
white river 270
orvis t3
and my eight wieght is a custom rod. on a st.croix imperial blank.
-
Willow switch is my favorite.
-
Fenwick 6wt. 9-1/2' generally trout, but bass, gills, shad...
Orvis Silver Label 9wt. 9-1/2' Salmon
Orvis Silver Label 7wt. 10-1/2' Steelhead/ Browns/ Salmon. Basiclly my Salmon River Rod.
-
St. Croix ultra 6wt-9 ft, imperial 5 wt-8 ft
Reddington 8 wt-10 ft
Scientific Angler 7 wt-9ft, 5/6 wt-9 ft(3 of them)
Burger Bros. 4wt-7ft, 5wt-8ft
a few others in the lower ranges
nothing high end or esoteric as I'm pretty hard on them and I've learned to balance my equipment inventory with my marriage. I do like to teach others how to cast to trout, bass and pike so I have two or more of a lot of things like float tubes and wading outfits. And my wife used to cast with me until the last few years when we had our daughter.
-
I have a 9' St. Croix 5wt and a 9' Shakespear 7-8 wt.
I want do more smallmouth bass fishing this year, hopefully with flies. Wooly buggers, poppers, and the classic terrestrial imitations sound like fun to me.
I like the St. Croix. Mine is a bit long though. I would like to get a 3 or 4 wt 7' or there abouts to tackle some of the more enclosed streams. This open water season is all about smallies and native brookies.
-
I think I gave My flyrod to Whatpole.
Bought it at a rummage sale for a few pennies or maby a buck,do`nt remember now.
It was made of steel and it collapsed down to about 3 ft. or so,a real funny investment. :rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol: :whistling:
Maby if Whatpole sees this post He might take a pic. of the thing and post it. ;D
-
I fish TFO's (Temple Fork Outfitters). I like the 9'ers and have several from 5wt to 8wt
X2

-
Cabelas Three Forks 7.5ft 3 wt
Cabelas Stowaway 5pc 9ft 6wt
Orvis Rocky Mt 8.5ft 5 wt
I end up using the stowaway the most, as it is compact and easy to transport to the places I need to go to find fish gullible enough.
-
Sage 9 ft 7 wt
GLoomis 9 ft 4wt
LL Bean 8 ft 5 wt
The 4 wt, is typically my go to rod on a day to day basis makes fish of all size fun.
-

Temple Fork outfitters, every one of 'em. Best bang for you buck ;D
-
2 9' Ugly Sticks one is a 6-7 and the other is an 8-9. A Shakespeare 8'6" 5-6wt. And an old bamboo rod (has no info on it, but guy I bought it from told me it was his grandfathers) that is 7'6" and I use 4-5wt line on it. That is actually my favorite rod, and I bought it for $1 at a yard sale. The next few I buy will be TFO's. Once you've tried one, you'll understand!
-
Sage DS 9 foot 5 weight Ist year they were made, liked it so much bought my dad a Sage 6 weight before he broke the bamboo he carried and fished for years. Mom gave it back couple of years ago along with the bamboo when Dad passed. I seem to find myself fishing his rod now, because of all the memories. Sure glad now that I bought him the rod he loved it and fished it almost every evening at his lake. jwm
-

-
Sage XP 4piece 9' #6 weight - (brookies, salmon, wading rivers, fishing small trout ponds)
LL Bean Guide Series 2piece 9' #8 weight (trollling for salmon, brookies, casting in windy conditions)
These two rods will cover pretty much all conditions encountered fly fishing in Maine for trout and salmon, would love to add an Orvis T3
8 1/2' #3 weight for casting tiny dries in dead calm conditions! 8)
-
I've got some newer rod/reel combos nothing real expensive, but my old Herters #6 4 piece is my favorite. I like fishing with the vintage stuff. Old School!
-
Just added another one to the collection last week. It's one of the lowest priced fly rods I have ever purchased. It's an Eagle Claw 6'6" rod. I was looking for something shorter than my bamboo rod for really tight spaces. I tried this one out over the weekend and it's a WINNER! I paid 12.99 for the rod, and the action on it is wonderful. I threw on a small reel loaded with 3wt. and it handles perfectly! It is supposed to be for 2 to 6 weight, but that 3 works so nice I don't even want to try anything else. The rod is even a 2 piece!

I think I saw those at walmart the other day, is it a fiberglass rod?

Just bought one of those Geo, the Eagle Claw 8'6" rod and reel combo for $28 at our little baitshop here in town.
It works awesome, just got back from Michigan and hammered the Gills with it. Nothing real big but a lot of them. Not sure what the rod is made of BBK, but it has good action.

I own a few of them, bought them back when Jordan ran it and it was an actual fly shop and all I can say is that they are OK. There are much better rods in that price range.
It's the only fly rod I know of that you better make sure the tip section is on snug every so often in between casts, they do retreive easy though and I did have a fish chase one one time ;D
-
I just started with an LL bean quest 6 weight 9 footer, I like it so far, but I need to get something smaller for the tight little brooks.
-
I fish with a St. Croix 5wt rod thats 7'6'', nothing special but I love it. Its their base model and will get another if I ever have to replace it.
-
I've got several, i have a 3 wt that i built. it's 5' long and for a little rod she's fast as hell. i use it for blue gill right up to trout. i love that rod, it's also the first one that i built.
i have a St.Croix which was my first 5wt that it bought, she's a medium speed rod and i use her for everything from blue gills right up to bass. that rod has landed some real nice fish.
i have an 8wt that i use for larger body's of water for trout and bass. it a nice slow rod easy to cast all day and real nice on the elbow. all the medium fish feel real big, it's great. i like that rod when I'm in a boat or my canoe.
i have a 9wt which is my stripper rod that i also take out on real windy days. this thing is so fast it's almost like using a broom handle. I've chased down large strippers and blues with it, all the way down to blue gills (i didn't know he was their till i brought it in and tired to cast it).
the last two are both cabela's rod the 9 wt is an ft and the 8 wt is a temple sl.
-
My new favorite rod is the Orvis Helios 3 wt 7'. Bought it for the small streams last year but realized it was a blast to use on the mid sized streams as well. Plenty of power even casting big bushy flies.
-
st croix and sage in 5 wt and 7 wt , also several bamboo i enjoy restoring them
-
7 1/2' 3weight is my favorite small water and dryfly rod, 7'9" 5 weight all around trout rod, 8 1/2' 7 weight for bass, 9' 9weight for saltwater
-
This is my first spring using my new Scott 8 wt 11 foot switch rod. Love the thing!!!!! Completely different from casting a 1 handed fly rod as far as ease of cast and distance casting!!! Also love the extra 1.5 feet over my sage 1 handed 8 wt!!!!!!
