Older craftsman screwdrivers are notorious for getting a white almost  corrosion  looking stuff on the handles. Clamp the shaft in a vise and take a wire brush to it.

Or go buy some Klein tools. I’ve had mine for a very long time. Still look like new.
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

this is what i found out  !

The handles are made from cellulose acetate butyrate, not polycarbonate. The white residue is a decomposition product and you can probably smell the stench of butyric acid.Jul 5, 2019

i was told the reason they used cellulose acetate butyrate was the insulation value  for electrical work....  my set and my snap on set  i got in 1974 to 75   with my  tool set for school  ....i  am obsessive compulsive about cleaning and putting tools back in the right spots.... i honestly never had a issue  but from what i just read this is very common

Soak them in hot water and dawn for 15 minutes, dry them with clean rag.
Apply crc or any non oil cleaner (dont use wd40).
Should be clear after that.
Apply Mcguires polish if you want them shiney
