Title: Fish and Mushroom report
Post by: bigr on Apr 08, 2021, 06:42 AM
Anyone finding any in the northern third. Fish, Hush puppies, shrooms, with a cold beer. I'm not a big beer drinker but it just goes with it nicely.

Too dry in newton county. Rain the next few days should get them going. My asparagus just came up last weekend.  I think we have a little while.

Appreciate the report. With these temps and sprinkles we're getting, it should be a good year for shrooms. I'll be looking in about 2 weeks.

Son and I found some gills and a couple perch. No mushrooms yet. That pic of grays has me drooling. What latitude did you find those?

All I can tell you about finding blacks is just from my experience. I have a few areas that I find them and none of them look the same. One has cherry near it, the others don't, the rest are just random hard woods. The areas I find them in are small as for having mushrooms, 50 yards any direction looks exactly the same except you won't find any Blacks. Once you find them, you will find them there for years, I have places I have found them for over 30 years. Naturally, the weather seems to be the big factor, some years there will be very few but they will almost always be there. I really wish I could be more help and say, “look for this, or that” but with blacks, for me, they sure seem to know what it is they like, but I'll be darned if I can tell you what it is!

I'm thinking one last weekend of shrooming. The giant ones should be up after the rains. I have over a hundred flagged I've left to mature. They have grown but are not yet yellow which I believe is when they are finished growing. I hope another hundred or so of their friends pop up by Saturday when i'll harvest. Big fish and fry planned for the evening. Back to fishing after that. Walleye I'm thinking.

Only had an hour to look. Found enough to take camping this weekend.  Found about twice as many dried up as I picked. I'm pretty sure they were up the last time I looked and I just missed them.  Sometimes I think I find about 10% and walk by 90%.

It's been a disappointing morel year at my place. Dribs and drabs of various morels, but no solid flushes. I've nearly given up hope. Did want to post a pic showing difference between a true black morel and a false(though edible we've found) morel. The false morels we find mostly under poplars. The true blacks are in a place with no defined characteristics though we've found a few most years in the same spot for 7+years. The true morel stems are integrated all the way to the top of the mushroom. The false stems separate before the top. In the pic if it shows up like I think the bottom is true, and top false.

When I was young we called them elephant ear mushrooms. I was told back then they were good to eat but never did just to be on the safe side.

This may have been the best season I've ever had in 55 yrs of hunting. Bumper crop and I've been picking for 5+ weeks now. Worked on the property yesterday and took a quick walk on trails to the same old spots that we have already picked hundreds from and found several more that looked like they had just came up. I'm in the Wabash area, N.e.central part of the state.

That's odd you guys had such a good shroom season. Here in north west I had one of my worst. Went one last time yesterday and found about a dozen dried up. Probably doesn't help I mostly hunt public ground and a lot of my areas got hit by the thrasher.

I have some railroad tracks that I find a bunch every year ,this year it was crazy good, north slopes were carpeted with them.I went through and picked ,then back through in a week and more popped up.I walked through one more time today and found only one.I believe it’s done for the most part,if you wanted to really search the heavy overgrowth in deep in the woods you could probably find a few fresh ones.Me and ticks don’t mix so I’m done

I cut them in half length wise, clean and flower them just like I would to fry them but then layer them between sheets of waxed paper in an air tight tupperware container. When your ready to eat them, take out just what you want from the container, still frozen, and put them right into the hot skillet. I like to save some to have venison steak and mushrooms around Christmas time. Makes the winter seem a little shorter for me!

I have had good results blanching, breading, freezing on a sheet then vacuum sealing. Unfortunately I didn't find enough to freeze this year. On the positive side though, I have a freezer full of panfish and the good bite hasn't even started yet.

Hunting rooms on railroad tracks isn’t the best idea in my opinion. If you ever saw how the railroad crew sprays the right of way along the tracks, you might look for a less toxic area! Just my opinion of course. Railroad Cops can also arrest you for trespassing. I’ll just hunt the woods! Hex

I stopped picking asparagus along the roadsides for that reason. Had a friend pick some that had been recently sprayed but hadn't died. He got very sick.

I know railroads spray to keep weeds and brush down but I would think they wouldn’t grow or come up.I’m looking in the tree lines away from tracks and on slopes or hills. If the weed chemicals were present I would think there wouldn’t be any growth at all just my opinion

I definitely agree! Watching them spray with their water cannon along my place, looked more like a fire truck or something for crowd control!

Looked for morels early on Thursday 5/27 in the Ashley, IN area. Used a small branch shaped like a hockey stick to move the skunk cabbage and other plants to the side to look around them. It had rained 3/10ths a couple days prior and hoped some might have popped out. Did not find any. Saw some gilled mushrooms on an old stump and also saw a broke down sugar shack. Glad some of you mentioned about herbicides and morels. Couple weeks ago hunted a prime spot by RR tracks and fields that had recently been sprayed. Did not find any. Went fishing at a private pond at 10 AM. My friend Don used worms on a plain hook and caught 25. I used mini-mite tipped with spike and ice fish jig with spikes and caught 10. Guess they wanted the worms. We fished 2.5' deep under bobber in 3-5 fow. Beds every where.

I saw the Praying Mantis egg case and the little ones emerging while digging a spot to place a tomato plant. A baby Mantis fell from the ornamental tall grass and landed on my shovel. In the fall I check for the egg cases when pulling up or cutting down spent plants. Found one on a coleus where a large female Mantis was staying. It was a cool calm overcast morning that you wished you where fishing instead of digging in the garden. Seeing them kind of made up for not fishing that day I guess, lol. Thankful to see them.

mantis have always hatched out around my grown up shed area.  when they hatch its a swarm.  seen the cats eat a couple unfortunately, lol  always thought they were neat also.  very cool picture man!

is that why you were asking me about oysters? lol
I need some help to identify the oyster mushroom. Hoping you could help me out. Maybe keep this thread going by finding other edible mushrooms besides the morel. Also need a change from cleaning fish, lol.
