So it all boils down to practice makes perfect and just keep in mind the fundamental cause of wind knots and what you need to do to correct it while you are casting.  Focus on what the tip of your rod is doing the whole time you are on the stream and maybe you can avoid most of the wind knots!

These have been some great posts guys.  Thanks for all the great information here!

great info.......
I actually took lessons from Ed J several years ago.  holy crap, that guy can cast!  he can actually cast AROUND objects.  he will put a person in front of his cast,  and cast straight at him.........but the fly (he doesnt use a hook ;))will land perfectly behind that person without touching him!  now I dont claim to be able to cast as well or as far as Ed.....but he showed us to just give a tiny flick of the wrist at the end of the cast, this will keep your line from colliding with itself.
give it a try in the yard with a piece of yarn as a fly....brighter the better....so you can see where its going.
You will never catch the hatch, if you are not there.
