I agree!  I have 4 electric cannon downriggers on the boat with swivel bases (two low profile and two of the older higher ones).  I also think the dual rod holders are outrageously priced! (check these out). 

As an alternative, you can buy a deck plate pretty cheap (or just use diamond plate) and bolt the base through it and your gunnel (with a bottom plate), thus eliminating the need for the swivel base.  I have seen guys with this set up.  The only hassle is you need to manually change the direction of the side riggers from out to in when you are docking.
