The Chu 4/22/2011 6:00pm
« on: Apr 22, 2011, 08:03 PM »
Finally got to the Chu after dinner this evening. Brought 1 rod and a couple Krockadile spoons. Fished for about 1 1/2 hours. Not a bad evening after casting for about 40 minutes switched from a chartruse with red spots to an all chartruse with a reflective strip. 2nd cast bang fish on 1st laker of the year. 10 minutes later if that bang laker #2.  4 casts later you guessed it #3. No real monsters all about the same size but a lot of fun none the less. Would much rather get them on hardware than live bait. Off to chase the native brookies in the morning and maybe the Chu again in the afternoon. Good luck to all who go out this weekend.

Fish on.  ;D :D 8)

nice job on the hat trick. 3 on hardware is a real accomplishment. i gotta start throwing more hardware. i have yet to get one on a lure from shore. chartruse i would have never thought that would work. now i got to go buy a chartruse one what's the weight and color reflector strip?

Size #4 on the spoon I would guess maybe 3/4 ounce. The reflective strip was also chartruse. I seem to have had the best luck over the last couple years with that color. The other color combo that works well for me is Gold with an orange stripe. I have also gotten several landlocks on those colors in the past years.

How do you retrieve those krocodiles if you dont mind my asking.  Ive never tried using one because i only fish from shore and i always thought of those as more of a trolling spoon.  Do you use a steady retrieve (if yes slow, moderate, fast?) or do you use a jigging motion with the spoon off the bottom.  Thanks for any help you can offer.  You are obviously doing something right.....

I try different retrives. Usually cast it out and let it drop and start with the slow steady retrive or moderate. If that is not working I'll try stopping a second during the retrive, a lot of times they hit right at the stop. Or when all else fails its the retrive with the ocassional slight jerk. Most of the time the steady retrive is most productive but I have taken fish with all styles of retrive. If fishing landlocks the moderate stedy retrive seems to work the best. Good luck.

Love them krocodiles, they are by far my favorite spoon. That lopey side to side wobble can be deadly. With a single hook I find you get a little more action. For a little more flash try adding some white bucktail. ;) A fast and jerky retrieve for fast movers or count it down and reel along the bottom, great spoon.  ;D I even use the 2+oz ones in the salt. They cast very well too.

Diced onions and slabs of butter or margerine in the belly bake in a glass pan at 375 until done. No matter what you do the Lakers aren't the best tasting but they are a meal. I like the native brookies the best. I cook them the same way also as well as the browns and bows. Got some brookies this morning in the rain and a couple browns out of this small stream I fish in Lancaster. I'll post pics later from today. :D

while we are on this subject.....would anyone mind sharing some opinions on where is a good spot to set up for lakers this time of yr.  I have never been out there and it is so intimidating because im not use to fishing bodies of water that size.  Just wondering what gate or gates might be worth a try.  I hope im not out of line asking here and im not expecting anyone to divulge any of their secret hotspots just a little advice....point me in the right direction if you will.  It would be greatly appreciated.  thanks....take care.
p.s. you can pm me if you would rather.

I needed some spoons cause i had none really so after this thread i bought 1/4oz 3/8oz 1/2oz 5/8oz chrome and hammered chrome Krocodile's.

Looked for 3/4 oz but couldnt find any and 1oz is just way to big i would suspect.

Now I just need 2 new rods and reels, I want another MH spinning rod/reel and a bait caster.
