Where Trap?
-
I know you can get some big cats at the mouth of the catt... when does that bite pick up? I'm assuming they are all over that particular area? And is there any bullhead action there?
-
i think i burned a gear up in my old bullhead cranking zebco 33 reel i guess i'll be searching today interesting i still have old johnson100b all setup for bullheadslol
-
I burnt out my faithful Penn 450ss last year. I guess after 40 or so years it deserves to retire. It’s got a home on my shelves with my fly reel collection.
I bought an ugly stick combo to replace it. Perfect bullhead gear.
Peepers were out on my walk this morning.

-
Sounds like it might be a good night for the picking - I might go out again too. Too early for bull heads where I fish but its coming soon I think..... water temp was still in the low 40's Thursday when I put in the dock - with no waders or boots :D
-
burning out reels? are these another kind of bullhead, other than the catfish type?
-

well i was cleaning away while on flopped and slide off the tail gate his horn went threw my sneaker and into my foot!!!!! after words of profanity i cleaned it up and finished cleaning ......was not fun
-
Ouch! Those spines burn for a while. I’ve had a few holes in the hand.
I’ve always done mine in the kitchen sink. Very early the next morning. (Before my bride gets up) The trick is to leave it cleaner than you found it.
Your tailgate must leave a trail. Hmmm, that doesn’t sound quite right.
I have quite a few left from last season in the freezer. But I might just go tomorrow just because....it’s a spring ritual.
Guess I should rethink my thoughts on opening day of trout. Sorry about that.

Hey Trapp sorry I laughed when you called to tell me of your spiking 😜

i must have screamed ever profanity known to mankind ,probably made a few new ones... :rotflol:

When that slime gets in the puncture that can hurt for days too. An old timer I knew used to nail them to a tree to clean ..... that was a little much but it worked - haha

profanity did make it feel better

No bullies there typically John.
And the cats have started, as well the smallies too.

Loaded up with crawlers this morning on my walk. Tried a few of my spots for crappie this morning. Not much going on yet. Heading to the bullhead pond in a while to see if I can get a few for dinner.
Gotta take my morning nap first. I sure like being re-retired.

6 bullheads 2 catfish and 2 big blue gills calling it a early night

just wondering has anyone ever tried catfish dough bait for bullheads ,i have done good with liver for them
-
My all time go to bait for bullheads are leeches. I fish the fair haven park pond and will fill buckets and everyone near me comes and asks what I'm doing different. I ask if they are using leeches and most of the time I'm told hell no those are gross. I tell them have fun watching then. Half the time I offer leeches to them and they still wont take them. I buy them by the lb and go through on average 3 lbs a year.
-
iceman13166
Are you doing mail order for the leeches? Who is selling them? Thanks

Just keep them in water in colder water..
I store mine in my fridge in a big pickle jar
-
Leeches work...no doubt. Very good bass bait as well.
Cold in clean water will keep them going for quite a while. They were one bait I could take to Canada without problem. Oh yeah....walleye like them too.

fished from 5 to 730 tonight with old roy we both got more then we wanted to clean

leeches like people!!!! need leeches take the kids swimming in the swamp
-
I normally buy from local bait shops when they place their order I ask for them to order me a pound or three. I keep them in a cooler with cold water. Once in a awhile I'll dump some bloody bullhead water in to feed them then the next day or 2 I swap the water out with fresh pond water. But lately the baitshops can't get them as early as I need them so I found a guy near rochester that traps them and sells them to me by the pound.
-
Nice bucket of bully 's
-
Where do you guys buy your leeches?
-
Back when I made a lot of trips way up north, you couldn’t bring worms across the border.for some reason, but you could bring leeches. I’d buy a couple pounds of big brown leeches and have a blast.
I always nipped the tail with a scissors to put some extra scent in the water.
Rg
-
it was because of soil
-
it was because of soil
Trap is correct.
Nowadays, in order to take worms, they must be in chopped newspaper or bedding.
Not dirt.
They don't want US parasites from the dirt.
-
I buy the leeches from a local who traps them around rochester. But I hear that Davenports on sodus has a fresh batch and I need to go replenish my supply. Only caught 20 last night in fairhaven but weird thing is how warm the fish are. I know the pond is real shallow like 3' but wouldn't expect the fish to feel as warm as they do. Wonder how they taste? Maybe mushy? I give them all away to people who can't make it out fishing so I just put in the labor to catch them and make them clean them.

i love it when bullheads bite in the day ....
-
Need a little info I am experimenting with different bullhead baits I'm doing quite well with chicken livers but they are a pain to keep on a hook. I've seen different remedies, just wondering if any one has a favorite so far the livers are out fishing the crawlers 3 to 1
Thanks for any advise
-
1. get some egg sac material 2. dry the liver till it is firm 3. find bullheads that like the worms better
-
i love it when bullheads bite in the day ....
I would fish for them a lot more if they did that where I fish thats for sure ..... I'm over fishing till midnight then having to clean fish when I get home (or the next morning when I wake up) :D :D
-
you have to be extra careful to catch bullheads in the day! first always use the lightest line possible day time bullheads are very line shy i never go heavier then 4 pound .......second bullheads become very seletive eaters only feeding on latest natural foods ......and my biggest secret is whats in this brown paper bag which will make anyone a great bullhead fisherman
-
Beer and bratwurst ?????? :D

I’ve tied livers in egg sac for years, but for catfish. If it’s working for your bullhead, give it a try. Seriously messy business though, and I have one of those little egg sac tiers.

nope the bag is full of BS just like the rest of the story ...were talking about bullheads their bottom feeders that eat every thing from worms to hot dogs crayfish to rotted dead blue gills put a worm on cast out and relax they'll eat it
-
hahahaha - I thought there might be some of those Thomas Eel Wiggler Spoons you recommended (I think it was you, for trout) .... I've checked Fish USA every other day and they've been sold out every day - thought you had them all in that bag ...

I've tried this for a couple years. Simple, cheap, and it works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atvUUohfjS8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atvUUohfjS8)

i tossed a few on the grill along with some asparagus and a ice cold labatts life is good ;D
-
Can beef or venison liver be used also ?
-
i done a little experiment ....now different places and different times you get different results i fished liver crawlers ,red worms, lver, and bloodsuckers...............redworms and crawlers out fished the bloodsuckers and liver at least 4 to 1....day before blood suckers dominated
-
I agree with you Trapp that worms “typically” outfish other bait, and not just for bullies.
However, because of this, I have experienced times when smaller other fish would easily pick the hook clean of the worm. So I would switch to leeches and experienced two things. First, the leech is far tougher and harder for smaller fish to pick apart and strip the hook. Secondly, I have found that most of the smaller fish weren’t interested in a leech for its meal.
So, in these cases, leeches far OUTFISHED worms and other bait. They simply caught more fish because the little fish couldn’t/wouldn’t get it off the hook.
BTW, this is why I will often use squid over cut bait and shrimp when fishing saltwater.
-
I use shrimp, actually cheaper than buying night crawlers.
-
I’ve tried shrimp, sardines, livers, red worms, scented dough baits, beef liver, stinky cheese, hot dogs, cut bait and leeches.
99% of the time I use night crawlers....and catch fish.
I’m gonna try some of Danny Kings stuff on the channel cats. There’s some good sized cats in the canal.
Last year I accumulated some good carp gear and I’ve seen a few videos of guys using carp techniques for cats. Most of them use treble hooks but they don’t catch and release like I do. Never really liked the taste of channel cats but they’re fun to catch.
So, I’ll probably use a gauze sac and circle hook instead. It’ll be interesting to see if the bullhead around here like it too.
Rg
-
i know the cheap hot dogs anfraspery jello on them works and 1 inch chunks of slim jims chunks ofcheese as well ....but they don't out fish a night crawler
-
i have caught bullheads on jigs and rapalas i bet if you can get away from weeds you could get a bullhead to hit a crawfish pattern fly.......hmmmmmmmm
-
After going to all 3 grocery stores in my area and not finding any chicken livers, I ordered 2, 14 oz tubs of Danny King’s blood catfish bait. Ended up getting it from Bass Pro of all places. Amazon was over $35 for the two and couldn’t get it here until May 4. Bass Pro was $22 and gave me 2 day shipping.
None available at their stores.
I’ll give it a try and a review......if it doesn’t snow next week.
Rg
-
I was thinking I’d make up some gauze sacks maybe using a bit of flour to help keeping it from sticking to my gloves. Shouldn’t hinder the scent in the water and I can use circle hooks so I can catch and release.
There’s more than one way to catch a cat.
We’ll see how it goes.

We used that stuff when we were fishing cats out in Iowa. Smells terrible. We used the trebles with the springs and just pushed them into it with a stick. Easy to bait and it stays on really good with the springs. Nonstop action.
-
I have a little fixture for tying egg sacs that I’ve used for all kinds of bait sacs. I’ll come up with a way to make bait sacs with this stuff.

catfish contest would be fun

I went out last night. Everything was good until a cold front came in and is was getting blasted with sheets of hail not to mention the lightning that lit up the sky. Enough was enough and I went home with just enough whisker fish for dinner tonight. I may try that borax recipie for the chicken livers. That Danny's goop sounds interesting but also a little disgusting . We'll see
-
Can’t think of a bullhead bait that’s not disgusting. Let’s face it, they’re ugly creatures that live on the bottom of the food chain.

Rented a Cabin in fairhaven tonight through sunday. Hoping to fill a few coolers with bullheads. Hoping the weather gets better. Thinking tonight might be a night for beers next to the fireplace in the cabin

Good luck iceman

Hope you brought your warm cloths ice man. It's tough not to go out especially after you invested in a cabin. Myself, I'm waiting for spring to come back The last time I fished weather like this I was in my ice shanty not that I'm whining but I just don't like it

Hopefully in the next couple days I’ll get out again. Catfish bait is supposedly arriving tomorrow.
On with the testing!!!

Catfish bait got here today. So much for BpS 2 day shipping. 2+3 is more like it.
You guys were absolutely correct......that stuff stinks......bad......realllllly bad. So, I think it’s gonna be #4 treble hooks as they suggest.
I ain’t touching that stuff without a full rubber suit.
Hope it works though.
