I know you can get some big cats at the mouth of the catt... when does that bite pick up? I'm assuming they are all over that particular area?  And is there any bullhead action there?

I burnt out my faithful Penn 450ss last year. I guess after 40 or so years it deserves to retire. It’s got a home on my shelves with my fly reel collection.

I bought an ugly stick combo to replace it. Perfect bullhead gear.

Peepers were out on my walk this morning.

Sounds like it might be a good night for the picking - I might go out again too.  Too early for bull heads where I fish but its coming soon I think..... water temp was still in the low 40's Thursday when I put in the dock - with no waders or boots   :D

Ouch! Those spines burn for a while. I’ve had a few holes in the hand.
I’ve always done mine in the kitchen sink. Very early the next morning. (Before my bride gets up) The trick is to leave it cleaner than you found it.
Your tailgate must leave a trail. Hmmm, that doesn’t sound quite right.
I have quite a few left from last season in the freezer. But I might just go tomorrow just because....it’s a spring ritual.

Guess I should rethink my thoughts on opening day of trout. Sorry about that.

Loaded up with crawlers this morning on my walk. Tried a few of my spots for crappie this morning. Not much going on yet. Heading to the bullhead pond in a while to see if I can get a few for dinner.

Gotta take my morning nap first. I sure like being re-retired.

My all time go to bait for bullheads are leeches.  I fish the fair haven park pond and will fill buckets and everyone near me comes and asks what I'm doing different.  I ask if they are using leeches and most of the time I'm told hell no those are gross.  I tell them have fun watching then.  Half the time I offer leeches to them and they still wont take them.  I buy them by the lb and go through on average 3 lbs a year.

Leeches work...no doubt. Very good bass bait as well.

Cold in clean water will keep them going for quite a while. They were one bait I could take to Canada without problem. Oh yeah....walleye like them too.

I normally buy from local bait shops when they place their order I ask for them to order me a pound or three.  I keep them in a cooler with cold water.  Once in a awhile I'll dump some bloody bullhead water in to feed them then the next day or 2 I swap the water out with fresh pond water.  But lately the baitshops can't get them as early as I need them so I found a guy near rochester that traps them and sells them to me by the pound.

Back when I made a lot of trips way up north, you couldn’t bring worms across the border.for some reason, but you could bring leeches. I’d buy a couple pounds of big brown leeches and have a blast.

I always nipped the tail with a scissors to put some extra scent in the water.

Trap is correct.
Nowadays, in order to take worms, they must be in chopped newspaper or bedding.
Not dirt.

They don't want US parasites from the dirt.

I buy the leeches from a local who traps them around rochester.  But I hear that Davenports on sodus has a fresh batch and I need to go replenish my supply.  Only caught 20 last night in fairhaven but weird thing is how warm the fish are.  I know the pond is real shallow like 3' but wouldn't expect the fish to feel as warm as they do.  Wonder how they taste?  Maybe mushy?  I give them all away to people who can't make it out fishing so I just put in the labor to catch them and make them clean them.

I’ve tied livers in egg sac for years, but for catfish. If it’s working for your bullhead, give it a try. Seriously messy business though, and I have one of those little egg sac tiers.

Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: Mac Attack on Apr 20, 2021, 07:51 AM
I agree with you Trapp that worms “typically” outfish other bait, and not just for bullies.
However, because of this, I have experienced times when smaller other fish would easily pick the hook clean of the worm.  So I would switch to leeches and experienced two things.  First, the leech is far tougher and harder for smaller fish to pick apart and strip the hook.  Secondly, I have found that most of the smaller fish weren’t interested in a leech for its meal.
So, in these cases, leeches far OUTFISHED worms and other bait.  They simply caught more fish because the little fish couldn’t/wouldn’t get it off the hook.

BTW, this is why I will often use squid over cut bait and shrimp when fishing saltwater.
Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: Rugburn on Apr 20, 2021, 07:51 AM
I use shrimp, actually cheaper than buying night crawlers.
Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: rgfixit on Apr 20, 2021, 07:59 AM
I’ve tried shrimp, sardines, livers, red worms, scented dough baits, beef liver, stinky cheese, hot dogs, cut bait and leeches.

99% of the time I use night crawlers....and catch fish.

I’m gonna try some of Danny Kings stuff on the channel cats. There’s  some good sized cats in the canal.

Last year I accumulated some good carp gear and I’ve seen a few videos of guys using carp techniques for cats. Most of them use treble hooks but they don’t catch and release like I do. Never really liked the taste of channel cats but they’re fun to catch.

So, I’ll probably use a gauze sac and circle hook instead. It’ll be interesting to see if the bullhead around here like it too.

After going to all 3 grocery stores in my area and not finding any chicken livers, I ordered 2, 14 oz tubs of Danny King’s blood catfish bait. Ended up getting it from Bass Pro of all places. Amazon was over $35 for the two and couldn’t get it here until May 4. Bass Pro was $22 and gave me 2 day shipping.

None available at their stores.

I’ll give it a try and a review......if it doesn’t snow next week.

I was thinking I’d make up some gauze sacks maybe using a bit of flour to help keeping it from sticking to my gloves. Shouldn’t hinder the scent in the water and I can use circle hooks so I can catch and release.

There’s more than one way to catch a cat.
We’ll see how it goes.

Hit the pond for an hour or so today. NADA!
High pressure, full moon (Supermoon),  cold North wind.........ran out of excuses.

Anyway, didn’t get any bullhead.

went to my favorite hole last night. Had 16 beauties by 11  and then the sky lit up like Disney world on the 4th.  Made a fast dash to the launch and trailered up just to watch it pass miles away. Figured I had enough & called it a night  Liver wrapped in egg sacks v/s night crawlers ran about 50/50
