Made some progress today on a new spiral design. Been mulling over the next big one and have a few ideas. I’ll probably get carried away as usual. But , I’m hoping to keep it under control.

Making circular tracks for the next marble skulpture

Haven’t decided how to support the tracks as yet. But it’ll come to me.

Lots going on there. I like a kinetic sculpture that you can sit in the middle of.

Started to rehab  a rod I made in May of 2002.  Stripped it today and turned a new handle and seat from Sepele Mahogany.

Its all wrapped and ready for finish. Havent decided if I’m going to use UV resin or Flex Coat. This little rod has caught more fish than I can possibly count.

Nah….I don’t smoke any more. There was a time when I enjoyed a good cigar with a glass of bourbon

Ordered some Flex Coat high build, UV resistant epoxy for the finish. Should be here tomorrow. Couldn’t take a chance with an un proven finish on a rod I’ve enjoyed for so many years.

That’s kind of what I was thinking Bob when I asked you about this.
A little fly that (eventually) will get lost is one thing, but a rod that you have a couple/few dozen or more hours (and $$$’s) into is a whole different thing.

Question -
Wouldn’t a few grooves turned into that handle make it less “slippery” when using?  It’s not cork or poly.  I was only thinking about it slipping in your grip while using.  Might also add a little character to it.  Just a thought before you coat it with the epoxy.

Good luck

Nah, if I wanted grooves I’d have put them there. Don’t really like the look or feel of them. This is a 6’6” ultra light rod. The handle is remarkably comfortable and already has 2 coats of spar varnish on it. It’s eons better than the cork grip I put on it originally.

I used all the original components. Even though the reel seat gear wasn’t my favorite. It just needed to be as original as possible. Nostalgia I suppose.

I might have $30 in this rod. Built it in 2002. Hand wrapped. Can’t remember how I managed to finish it.  Another $20 for good rod finish is perfectly acceptable.
