George Snyder Kentucky reels 1805
Well, CNY Farmer gets my vote. If this ins't the correct answer, it probably should be. Snyder's multiplying ("Kentucky") reels formed the basis of just about every type of reel made today. Although it did take some city-folk to perfect the design with the counterbalanced shaft ("New York" Reels)
As for my guess: The first artificial stonefly, Egypt, circa 1400 B.C

william hardy , hardy perfect reel, 1891 Alnwick, England
hardy's reel was introduced in 1891 and included most of the improvements that fishermen had been asking for: it was narrow between the plates, and deep in the drum, with an adjustable check (within a limited range). It had a 'foot' mounting, and a patent 'revolving ring line guard' which facilitated the shooting of line. The reel ran on ball-bearings and could be taken apart for easy cleaning, unlike its predecessors. This ease of disassembly was the key to the Perfect's success. Prior to the Perfect, the side plates of reels were held together with screwed intermediate bars, and a reel that had grit inside it was a nightmare to clean. The only feature the Perfect lacked was an exposed rim, precluded by the nature of the design - the shot above shows the brass spool recessed inside a steel cage in an early twentieth century example.

We have a winner ! ;D
In 1874 Orvis received a patent on a new design in fly reels. Patent Number 150,883 is now regarded as a milestone in American fishing tackle history. The 1874 reel was in some ways a major break with previous reel design. Its spool was narrow, quite unlike most fly reels then in use. The perforations on the side plates, which lightened the reel considerably, permitted air circulation through the line when it was on the spool. As the patent claimed, "A current of air is continually forcing itself through the wound-up line, and all mildew and rot thereby avoided, as under these circumstances the line soon becomes thoroughly dried
For those that don't know the line was silk back then.
billybono contact me with name/addy. archbishop do the same (I'll come up with something) ... you owned that one !

Where is round four. Doesn't matter if there is a prize or not, this trivia thing is addictive. Keep it up, very educational.
-
I'm for Trivia without a Prize... During the couple of rounds I did research for I learned a lot... I'm sure someone here wouldn't mind taking over Lonewolf, if you need the help, those Tournies can take up a lot of valuable fishing time... ;), maybe a once a week type of thing.... I'm game.... ;D
-
there probably trying to figure out a way to not get the answer guessed on the first clue
-
I've got a good next round..... Hint: Fishing Lure
There are some many to choose from, you may have to wait for a second or third clue to make an educated guess...as to the specific make and model.

Does it come in more than one color?
-
You see where this one could take a couple of days to figure out, at one hint a day, first clue needs to be vague, so the rest of the clues start to narrow the field down... or maybe we can start a game kinda like 20 questions except where there is so many of us, it could be called "You only get one question..." , all for bragging rights of course, and to say " I am 6 time MFF Trivia Winner" in your signature line or something like that... ;D
-

Maybe one rule should be that you only get one guess per day
-
actually pike guy...i agree....even though i guess 90 times...lol. that would realy elimanate the early just go untill you get its. thats not a bad idea at all..
it was fun though...thanks lefty..you killed an hour at work for me ;D
-
Glad I could be of help..... I definately agree that it should be one question and one guess per member per day, the only thing I see being a hard time is answering the questions in a timely manner, to help the flow of questions and guesses, I start back to work tomorrow, so I'd only be able to update in the morning before and then all evening when I'm home and online.... I gotta work out the details and get permission to make it official. It was fun for me too, so hopefully it will be a feature in the near future.... ;)

By the way, that was just a general thought for making it last longer..it didn't have anything to do with your guessing a few times ;)
