just wondering ,anyone get any yet this year
-
Nope...went yesterday afternoon for a while. Nothing yet. Didn't stay too aweful long. Realized my license was expired and went home to renew it. Couple more years and I'll pay the $65 for a lifetime license.
Anyway, I put a line in the water.

No peepers yet. :)

No peepers yet. :)
I haven't seen a soul at the usual spots if anyone was catching. heard our first peepers last night.
-
Funny you should say that. I wasn't hearing any peepers either and thought " too cold yet"
Rg
-
No peepers here either ,
-
I’ve been hearing preepers for over a week and I live 5 min from cnypanfish. Haven’t tried for bullheads yet though. I was going to last night but watched the fights instead.
-
Good reminder to put some ear plugs in my bullhead bucket. When a bud and I really got into them last spring the peepers where deafening. My bud sacrificed a handkerchief so we could make some ear plugs. It was so disturbingly loud we ended up leaving a little early. My spot still had ice a few days ago, I'll give it a little more time. I can taste the chowder now though!
-
oh well.........lets share that recipe ;D
-
if theres any peepers out tonight they are going to freeze their lil hineys cause it's getting cold
-
How about the sacandaga any spots for bullheads??
-
Couldnt find any bullheads but found a bucket full of jumbo ramps willing to come home for dinner.
-
Went couple weeks ago with iceralph and got about 40 nice bullhead water was cold but think spillway ran a little warmer water into river...also had to fight off the carp that were around.....been blugill/crappie fishing since then...will. Be getting back on the bullhead maybe next week.
icejohn
-
One more week or so should kick them into gear.
-
After all the rain this week something should happen other than high waters everyplace
-

Every place but Cayuga lake? ;D ;D
-
water temp at Sheldrake Point is 36-37 degrees. I think we need 40+ to get them really active.

33* and snowing here....calendar is broken...

This thread cracks me up. Here in Indiana most people consider them a nuisance and here you guys are anticipating the bite. Just shows the differences in the regions. And what the heck is a peeper?

Anyone know of a place near Cheektowaga where I can take my kids bullhead fishing I used to love going with my grandfather in upstate ny. Looking to get the kids out for bullhead or perch
-
Anyone know of a place near Cheektowaga where I can take my kids bullhead fishing I used to love going with my grandfather in upstate ny. Looking to get the kids out for bullhead or perch
Not really near Cheektowaga, but -
Back bay of Wilson Harbor
Beaver Island Marina - but only before they allow the boats in there - no fishing afterwards.
Big Six Mile Creek Marina in GI
Silver Lake has them too, but I haven't fished for them there since the late 60s and early 70's.
A place closer to try is Como Park lake.
Never fish for them there, but have heard people do catch them there over the years.
One last spot I used to fish for bullies a LOT back in the early 80's is on Home Rd in Millgrove where it crosses the creek.
There used to be a bridge there, but it's now gone and Home Rd is closed basically.
If you can get down it, enter from Walden Ave., just on the east side of the EC Home. Drive down to the creek and enter on the right side of the road.
There is a deep hole there and it was always loaded with bullhead at this time of year.
Pike too, but they aren't legal until May 1st.
Good luck and have fun.

Went tonight. Short story, no fish.
Went to Oneida South Shore. Weather was awesome. Lake was flat, water was gin clear. Did see two or so swimming around real slow. I also heard some surface strikes for about an hour after dark, not sure what they were. There were maybe two dozen minnows around the dock (bucktails maybe?). My best guess is the water needs to warm just a little more & lake needs to turn over. Seems like it's real close. Maybe a little more chop would help, the clear water could be affecting the bite. Great night to be out, looking forward to doing it again.

I've been trying to change mine for a couple weeks. Tried a wide variety of online pics. I don't want another online "host". Won't let me use anything but the "gallery".
-
Starting to get them but it's very weird this year. Without any leeches to use in my spot we've been catching a mixed bag from blue gills, pumkinseeds, rock bass, perch, bow fins and bullheads. But the bullheads have only been biting between 8-9:30 and then pretty much shut off using night crawlers.
-
I got 6 more last night and they are smaller then the ones I got last year ....I like the smaller ones to eat but I did notice that and it's a slow bite and fish act finicky .....seen the loons again 2 beaver and a million endangered geese

A drop down menu will appear
Choose "Forum Profile"
Then just choose "No Avatar"
That will fix the exploded avatar.

Meanwhile.....back at the bullhead pond.......I went for a couple hours yesterday afternoon. No bites. Friday night I'll give it a real try and stay a while. This rain ought to get them going. I did hear some peepers and that's a good sign to me.
On this morning's walk I picked up a good pound of crawlers. Came home and made a 2 bucket worm farm that I saw on YouTube. One bucket sits inside of the other. The top bucket has a lid with air holes in the lid. The bottom of that bucket has holes for drainage into the bottom bucket. I used shredded newspaper and peat for the medium.
Then some research lead me to making some food for the little squirmers. Corn meal and oat meal ground up fine with the coffee grinder.
Seems I've done everything but use that coffee grinder for grinding coffee. Mostly it's used for making dubbing mixes and grinding up spices and herbs.
But, I've got a good supply of bait if they ever start biting.

Never fish for bullheads on purpose. I have only caught a few through the ice, thinking about trying it?

It's a spring ritual, we go catch some bulls, then gather some leeks, and make a pot of fish chowder.
You should give it a go Bart!

I went after the bullheads the last 3 nights with zero luck besides some small perch and sunnies. Def need this rain and some wind to make them turn on.

Rugburn, looks awesome, probably the best motivation for me... food! ;D

I know the bones make the best stock, but in chowder?
Just wondering.
-
I was also wondering how this process worked since i would assume the bones would be all over the place. Maybe i am missing something here but I am very interested in the process. I would love to try it as well with some bulls.
-
Mrs. Rugburn is the cook, I just get ingredients. Yup the whole carcasses go in the stock pot 1st, lightly boiled. Then she pulls them out and takes the meat off the bones. No meat wasted this way. And I'm sure she checks for straggler bones in the stock. The fish meat is then set aside to add near the end. You don't want the fish turning to mush. Etc...etc. I have never encountered a bone in her chowder.

Cool.
And what I have always loved about bullies compared to other fish is the entire skeleton pulls out easily after cooking without leaving any bones in the meat.
Same thing with cats.
Thanks.

Yup... ;) Plus it's fast at the cleaning bench.

Clean just like a cusk and eel.

strange evening with the water so cold ,I started fishing about 5 and was catching some bullheads then I started getting these crazy looking fish! I had a heck of a time figuring it out ,I even called Freddie for help .... then I realized I was catching hybrid fish!!! that's right I got a bunch of them ... this explains why they would bite in this cold water!
here is a picture of a brown bullhead

notice the grey color the spots the forked tail and remember the water temps ...a hybrid for sure

to cold for channel cats! nope those are clearly cold water "bullackers" with pictures as proof I'm sure the state biologist will be calling me for information on my rare and prized catch ...I must warn you don't be trying to trick me into sharing where I caught this strange mutated hybrid of the deep by pretending they are common catfish.... as I have said many times .....we will now see what else is biting ....fish on ;D
-
Peepers were going nutts last nite along the river where I live.
The warm weather this comming week should have the BooHeads a Bitting.

I had to go back and get some more last night I don't know why

How big are the ones you guys catch around here Dutches county a good one is 12 inches but 14 inchers are pretty common and if you know where to go there are bigger ones to be had

Only managed 6 this afternoon. Wind changed to NNW and it rained the whole time. Thank heavens for good rain suits. Anyway, 6 more for the fish fry.
And...this morning on my walk I filled another Ziploc with night crawlers.

Good job on the catches guys, I myself havent been so lucky. Only day I could fish all week is today and its snowing, blowing and freezing out but I went anyway and got skunked. They either werent there or didnt want worms or shrimp. Looks like I'll have to have the leftover shrimp for lunch instead of fried bullheads >:(

I like them on the grill too. Bread them as you normally would and hit them with some 0% fat cooking spray. Bake them on the Weber at 400 or so. Come out crispy and no excess oil to clog the arteries.
I also like to fillet some nd cook them in parchment paper with some Italian dressing and Franks Red Hot or Salsa.
This is making me hungry.

Nice job to those who've scored, and to those who braved the nasty weather. I decided to work on getting the boat and tackle in order, read a Grisham novel, and enjoy a few cocktails this weekend. It will become hectic soon enough. Plan on trying in a few days after the warm up. I don't know if I'm getting soft or wise?

Likley Cayuga Lake as is close evening drive after work
Have seen the crowd at the upper Cayuga lake state park fishing from the pier. Are they always in shallows?
Worms?
Any tips appreciated.

Oil does not clog the arteries, it lubricates them. Lubrication is a key component of any good preventive maintenance program.

You keep them right over your way I have to contend with gobies what a pain in the butt they are...

I used to fly fish for Rudd at Seneca Lake State Park in the early spring.. they're a blast on the fly rod. Mickey Finn streamers were irresistible.
Never eaten one.
