Title: Now I remember....
Post by: Roccus on May 14, 2019, 08:33 AM
what it was like to fish for stripers in November, except back then in the bye gone days  they were bigger and there were more of them.
last night I spent 3 hours in the sleet and pouring rain, I ended up with 9 "giants" that laid nose to tail( all of them together) MIGHT make a commercial keeper... Enough of this foolishness, my boats not leaving the dock again until the air  temp gets above 65!

LOL.

Joe - I wish you the best this season and I also hope that you acheive that goal you have been chasing the last few seasons. As far as I know, you have not crested that 50 total goal.

Time to chase some blackfish down my way. Fluke are right behind them!

This weather is ridiculous.  The extended forecast looks a little warmer but I'll believe it when I see it.

2 more to 20...I've done 2 in one night...all I ask for is a chance...

Worst weather in the country. I Went truck fishing. I  sat in the truck and fished the ramp. Got 2 on worms and stayed warm. Hands get cold fast when wet and over 50. A least fish are here

I get to say this because I know you know better...because I certainly do.  I've avoided the hudson scene this year...I skipped the hold overs in the CT holdover spots...ive ignored the CT river migration...ive caught enough stripers beyond 30lbs where really I am after one thing...that mark.  Granted I'll probably release it and never know the true weight but thats ok.  If I could beat 52" bass (my current pb from shore) I'd be satisfied.  Ill get a couple shots to beat it off of block this year but boat fish don't count  :P

Also not surprised at all to hear you fished at night this early in the season.

Must have felt great to dust the cobwebs off.  Im waiting until memorial day weekend to formally kick off what is a long season!

Alot of things go into fishing success and how we measure it,I know or knew (deceased now)many excellent fisherman that never got a "50" .. sometimes it's about timing, most times a 45lb fish is the same class as 50 or even 60 lb fish,I've been targeting large only since 1982,and in a place that sees summer residents that have had to swim the gauntlet of the Jersey Shore, block island and Cape cod canal , they get educated and beat up along the way..96% of my fish come from 6 FOW or less, and I only use Ande tournament #16 line on my spinners. .25 in the conventional reels, I use a boat because I'm smart enough to realize I'd be severely limited otherwise,I've had the same boat for 35 years, striped bass fishing is my passion, and has been dance 1972,I've found a thumb drive full of pictures a few weeks ago, and it's full, even some tuna pictures. .here are a few bass pictures of 50lbs plus fish including a 61,the oldest us the 61 taken in 86, the most recent Is the shouldered fish from 3 years ago that bottomed out a digital  scale.and I Remember Exactly Where I Got Every ONE Of them.the conditions and the bait.i threw in a fun picture from a time when cod were legal, a striper cod double from the mouth of the river,  that will never happen again in my life time

oh that's BAD.. you should get a time out for wanton waste!.. I don't make many of them, they are a lot of work... I've got one that I've refinished twice, for some reason even though I hydro orient every plug, use the same weight etc. that one out fishes all others...

I'll look and see if I have one I can spare...no promises..

Noreaster Joe.  I couldnt fish the tip amongst east 10-15fters.  (Not exagerating) so I was forced to fish the middle and inside the jetty during outgoing.  The first bass I hooked...ran straight out...normally we'd turn those fish to the soft side.  Unfortunately I couldn't get to the tip...the bass turned into the jetty and got smashed between the rocks.  I could feel it connected so I stuck that combo in the rocks.  So I figured id wait until morning when the tide dropped, and go in and retrieve my fish.  I picked up my second combo tied on a slope head....got smacked and that fish rain up deeper into the breach and cut me off on the rocks.  That occured 3 or 4 times before the cost of plug lost plus the emotional damage of losing fish in conditions I didn't think Id ever hook up in caused me to quit and wait for sunrise.  I took a nap on the jetty.

Morning came...I noticed my line was limp...the wave action cut my leader and the bass and plug were gone.  Probably for the better...no way I could have retrieved the surf was massive still.

I have a divers license. Ill check the Jetty for you pal!

Joe - clearly you stated that they are a ton of work. However, if you were ever up for it, I would pay you whatever you wanted for one of those as long as you signed it before coating it. Would be one hell of a b-day present for my son when he is older. Not too mention a story to go with it.

Guy in my card league's son makes custom plugs.  I play with the guys father who is 93 and is still sharp as ever and makes a few lures here and there.  Mike's Custom Plugs is the company for the son.  They look pretty impressive.  I don't own any but curious if you guys have ever used any of his lures.

Used to fish with him frequently.  His dad is the man!  The plugs work fine indeed.  However the jointed eel is legendary in its own right based of sheer poundage...it took a while to get confident with such a large plug but after time it became a top contender on every trip.  I had one that Joe's friend made (to Joe's spec) that caught stripers from Montauk to Maine before we parted ways!

Jon, what color was yours...I make a jointed bottle plug as well..I only have 2 of those left...Ill post some plug pictures latter,  I  don't sell because it would cost more than most people are willing to pay ...Liz at surf land asks me every time I see her if I'll sell her plugs to sell.

I had both the olive and brown colors.  Love the reverse bottle plug.  I miss the plug game.  I got good at jigging and stuck with it for years...then eels in the surf.  I got back to swinging darters last year.  That was highly successful.  Perhaps I ought to plug again...

Versatility is the key, best known as an eel slinger,I use every tool at my disposal, plugs, jigs, soft Plastics  etc.including a 10wt. Fly rod that has taken fish to 38lbs when they were sipping rain bait like a brook trout..

I've developed a darter that I use along the beach,it's 5" and 2 ounces, but instead of birch, I use red cedar and use added weight to give it action, it needs very little current, and provokes vicious strikes by sweeping the rod and then twitching it like a spook, intermittant rest between sweeps ,parrot and white seem to be the best colors, pink seems best in twilight and bright moon light.
I've got to do some more digging,  I've got plugs EVERYWHERE.

Its an easy habit to get into.  Back years ago I was skipping the crappy tides and taking 3 hr rides to winchendon to turn plugs with Jimmy.

Funny you mention those colors.  Ive done surprisingly well with the parrot at night.  Granted I'm just tossing super strikes nothing special but they do work.

If  you know how to work a plug, you can catch a fish on a stick with hooks,as you know, plug fishing is alot more detailed than just chuck and reel...

Was going to fish tonight, but had a new set of tires put on my truck... should have went fis8, it would have been cheaper! :o

Ha I just had that done last week.  285-45-22's.  Not cheap...I did fish tonight...but it was nymphing for trout followed by a few swings of some big sculpin steamers.  Educated a few on the nymphs.  Streamers went untouched....water temp a tad cold where I was.

Memorial day weekend I kick off the season.  Last year was a bust year before I landed a 37lber.  Its gone back and forth for years in big fish that weekend.  If it gets busy Ill go to cowtown.  The internet doesn't know where cowtown is Joe!!!

Yea, I bought Bridgestone Dueled Revo 3 AT 265/70/ 18 E.. as you said not cheap.

Water is real cold, kudos for trying, should warm up next week from the look of the long range,,  alot of debris in the river here,, plugging my eel traps, but I'm still getting some, main migration is in june,Memorial day is a good kick off, we usually see our first Mac's then, fat bottom girls will be close behind..
I love this time if year, it gets better each day.last year was pretty good here, 2019 has been good so far(ice fishing), now it's time for the real fishing to begin.

I think you'd be surprised at how much people would pay for a high quality plug.  Mike's father was saying that the more he charges the faster the plugs seem to sell.  It is however a huge time investment to produce them at that quality and for retail purposes.

I've been making plugs for 40 years,,my investment was paid for years ago,I've got jigs and patterns made for over 30 styles of plugs, it's the labor that goes into the production of a true custom plug that makes them so expensive, very few builders hydro orient each and every plug, then weight, and test it before sealing it ,I've caught fish on prototype plugs that were bare wood and unweighted, and not even sealed, sometimes it doesn't matter..everything is labor intensive, comercial builders just can't spend that amount of time and turn a profit, I get requests from people and bait shops all the time,I'm not interested.its a hobby I've been doing most of my adult life, selling them would take that pleasure away.

That's great!  Glad you have such a passion for it.  I tie some flies and understand the time consuming process of creating something from scratch.  You need so many darn materials for tying flies that it isn't a money making operation either once you take your time into account.

Last weekend the schoolies were loving my white and blue zuddler (zonker/muddler) that I use for trout but they were keyed in on pretty small bait.  I got a few on chartreuse and/or purple clousers but the bigger I went the less I caught.  The fly is beat to hell now so I need to get back on the vise but there's too many fish to catch this time of year.

Well Joe & Pat..I am optimistic but curiously so.  Tide looks good.  Incoming tide early in the morning.  We're launching in east haddam and going to search on our way down.  Plus if the bass don't play nice we will chase pike near where we launch.  (Probably will anyways!)

Spot lock and stripers ought to be fun.  I need to grab a few staples that I used in the spring.  9" white sluggos 100% must have.
