Glad to be started on what I hope is the best open water season I have ever had. I have more time and money invested for this year than all my previous years combined. My 2014 season will be mainly focused on pike and tiger muskies with the occasional trout adventures to mix things up a little. Started off our May 3rd season opener at a tournament. Had very tough conditions and fishing was cold and slow. Managed one hammer handle all day seen below:

Yep. On the NY page. Now that I've hooked up and felt a fish I can concentrate on the biggins

Nice start with the hammer handle. X2 on the biggins, its about time for me to start chasing some tigers myself now that the wipers have moved off to open water

I'm very fortunate to have a tiger lake close by which gets no pressure. I plan to spend a lot of time paddling there. Caught my first one through the ice there this past winter, and now I'm hooked. So is the fiancé ;D

My goal is a tiger muskie. I don't have much faith I'll get one

Herkimer is one of the places I've seen em pulled out of. I'll get one this year....just watch! ;D

Just keep after it. Just because they aren't there one day doesn't mean they won't be there tmrw. Find good structure like points, saddles, islands, ect. They are constantly on the move. You need to cover a lot of water or pick your spot and wait for them to come to you. Think big in terms of bait. I like to take 12-14" suckers that I fillet for laker strip bait. They seem to like that. I've also had good luck on big live shiners. But remember, I fish an unpressured lake. So idk what the bait used in the river is like.
-
Forgot to mention what side of islands and saddles to set up. Tigers move out deep at night to hunt and move back in shallow to digest. So when your looking for structure, look for something which provides direct access to deep water in the main lake from the shallows. I like to set up in 8'-15' of water.
-
Thanks for the tips! I have a feeling it's going to be a fluke when I catch one....I usually get all my best fish when I'm not targeting them lol
-
Hey, either way, it works. Just as long as you don't hook up with a tiger on walleye gear lol
-
Lol good thing I only have bass gear! My luck is I'll hook up on my finesse fishing set up
-
Well, since I have limited time right now and I have had a very tough spring hooking up, I'll post some past year pictures:

Thanks! Felt good to get some fish to hit on the rise. Can't beat it.

Friend of mine with a nice SM out of Keuka. We were at the state park and I saw a nice fish rise out of the water about 20ft off shore. He had one of his rods and a little tackle with him. Third cast out with a little top water zig zag action and the fish exploded on it. Put up one heck of a fight. He got it about half way in and it just stayed pinned on the bottom. It was fun to watch to say the least:

The black and orange has been very good to me. It will be in need of new paint by the end of the season ;)
-
That's exactly the same lure I got my last pike on! :) What is it about black and orange that get's musky, pike, trout and walleye fired up? I guess it doesn't matter as long as we use 'em and they bite 'em!

That right! The bass too. Both LM and SM hammer it as well. The good thing is when I know it's a bass on, I know it's going to be big.
