A good friend of mine and of a few members of this site,Rutnut,is in bad shape in the hospital.

He's a Great,friend and outdoorsman.

he's recovering pretty well but it's going to be a long road. He was alone hiking on a trail in Benezette. Alone, no cell reception and 2.3 miles in. Stepped over a small stream to get some water and the snake got him. He told me if he was in 3.3 miles instead of 2.3 miles he wouldn't have made it. He got lucky, when he was coming out at the trailhead there was a guy just coming in to check on a cabin he owned. He told me that when he gets out of the hospital he's stopping to pick up a set of snake boots! Probably wear them mowing his lawn, going to the corner store... church...

I told him there ain't no snakes when you ice fish! ;D

He's doing better but still working at it. They are waiting for his platelet count to get higher before they release him. He's hoping for after the weekend sometime. I heard his story and to tell the truth, he is one lucky man. If you go out where snakes are prevalent,  think about snake boots and worry about cell reception. That was his biggest problem after the snake bite, it took him an hour just to get out of the woods because he couldn't call for help and he got lucky that there was a guy at the trailhead that was coming in to check on a cabin. He tells me that his first purchase will be snake boots and a sat phone/sos gps locator.

Thoughts and prayers to him.  I'm glad he's doing better and wish him a fast and full recovery.  As for his list of stuff to buy I would suggest adding a Taurus Judge and a few boxes of .410 shotgun shells with 7 1/2 or 8 shot  along with the other stuff.

He's home. I stopped by yesterday to see how he's doing. His leg wasn't pretty to begin with, now it's downright scary! LOL! He's gonna be out of the game for a while but he's still playing. He said he has checked out the thread but can't post on it cuz he doesn't have his password. He said he appreciated your prayers and good thoughts.

Just glad to be ALIVE to fish another ICE season!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE PRAYERS!!!!!!! THEY WORKED!!!!! 😎

Wow wee Rutnut, that is my worst nightmare, snakes that bite! Never had the pleasure to meet you but after reading this thread I said a prayer for you and your family. Not sure where you're located, I've heard of rattlers up in the north east, but fortunately never run into one. It's great to hear you are back home mending!  :thumbup_smilie:

Rugburn,

First off it is ‘Ol Snakebite now!  ;)

Next- Thanks so much - all prayers appreciated!

I live in Pike Co where I have always been told there ARE rattlers. Luckily I have never seen any here in 25+ years.
I have done several backpacking trips in North Central PA where they do the snake hunts. Saw a dark phase Timber Rattler on a trip several years ago. It was easy to see,  but did not rattle til I almost touched it with my hiking staff(not to harass, but to see if it WOULD rattle. It did, much too late for my liking!  :o

This time it was a yellow phase Timber which blend in amazingly well. It never rattled and I did not see it til it was striking!  ::)

While doing research this week Timbers are noted for NOT rattling! So don’t expect them to. The other nasty thing peculiar to Timbers, is the venom not only attacks the surrounding tissues of the bite, BUT ALSO attacks the platelets!(other rattlers do not do this)
So a major concern is an inability to CLOT!  :o

When I got my first bloodwork I was down to 7,000 platelet count. “Low” is considered <130,000 and “normal” is 150,000

So bleeding was a MAJOR concern- why they were keeping a CLOSE eye on me for safety reasons. Could not use razor and a fall could be disastrous! And the way I was walking, with a walker, that was a possibility. I had to wait til my platelets rose above 50,000 before they would release me. Keep that in mind!

I will now wear snake-proof chaps when in the woods!

Glad you're on the mend. Realistically it could just as easily happen to me although I haven't seen a rattler in years.

A few years ago a friend of mine in Vermont got bit in the face. You could say it was his fault because he was messing with it. Long story short, they got him to Rutland hospital. No anti-venom in VT. Medivaced in a dose from Albany. Apparently it had expired and was no good. Had to medivac a second dose days later from New Hampshire.  He was in the hospital for a month and a half. He's lucky to be alive!

Get well!   ;D

Post by: ‘Ol Snakebite (RuttNutt) on Jul 30, 2018, 07:51 PM
Thanks KP!!!!! Glad to still be breathing!!!!  8)

Fishmachine- Thanks! Bites are VERY rare!!!! Avg of 2-3 venomous bites in PA per year- and 1/2 of rattler bites are “dry”( no venom) I was just in wrong spot at wrong time!
As soon as it hit me I knew it was bad!!!!!!! Fingers and toes started tingling, lips swelled and went numb and head was spinning as I walked back down the mountain. Just tried to stay calm and keep moving. It was just over 4 hrs til I got first dose of anti-venom. They say under 6 hrs prevents permanent damage/death.

Tell your buddy the good Lord was protecting him! Days later is not supposed to work!!!!!!! :o That’s just crazy!!!!!!!!They we’re concerned with me pushing past the 4 hr Mark. Why I was airlifted a second time from Altoona to Pittsburgh. Apparently that’s where all the best toxicologists are in Pa!

I'm glad you're doing better and you're proof what determination on a person's part and some prayers will do for a person.  I hope you have a full and speedy recovery and when you do we have to do some fishing.  Oh and don't worry I'll bring my near and very dear friend Sam with me.  Chez saw how well Sam and I work together and you can be sure I don't hesitate on having him go into action.   ;)

Chris- I look forward to getting together and meeting Sam! When we do, I will tell you guys the whole story-it is amazing! But nothing I did- it was ALL GOD!!!!!!!  ;) He got me thru it so my family did not have to find me (dead) on that trail! The way things were going I figure I probably could have made it a few more tenths of a mile on my leg. But NOT much more!!!!! THANK GOD I had stopped 2.3 miles from my car to set up camp!

THANKS GUYS!

Filet- LOL! I can only imagine!  ;D

Yesterday went for bloodwork in AM and family Dr in PM. Got GREAT news! In 3 days platelets went from 50k to 272k!!!!!! God at work!  ;) Toxicologist in Pitt said it would be weeks before platelets got back to normal(NOT days). Can’t explain it.

Dr. Is a quirky, funny older Jewish gentleman. And blunt!  After he heard my story, he said “Good thing God gave you more “hutzpa”................to make up for your lack of brains!”
I then told him: “story of my life, doc! When you are NOT Dean’s List material, you gotta make up for it by being REALLY tough!”  ;D

They also weighed me- down 20 lbs! Just don’t have my appetite back yet.

I see some “kayak therapy” in my future! I need to keep my leg extended with a slight flex in the knee- as in the position you are in sitting in a kayak. I think at least 3-4 days per week should do it!  ;)

For whatever reason I got sucked into several episodes of “I was prey” on the animal planet network, and it made me think of this thread.

The show was about survivors of horrible incidents in which each individual survived amazing odds against a shark attack, snake bite, yote attack, and so on. Everyone on the show had decided to survive because of x,y, and z, but almost universally it was about god/family. Made me think of your comment about your family finding you on the trail, and how you just were not going to let that happen.

If you’re interested I would contact them as I am sure they would love to air your story in an episode on TV.

I am glad everything worked out for you and your loved ones.

Thanks zwiggles, but I have no desire to be on a TV show like that. Just trying to get the message out on outdoor sites/message boards to warn folks. NOBODY wants to go thru this if it can be avoided!!!!!!!  :o

Actually, I did that. (Team UBP) little advertisement for our state Bowhunting org!  ;)

They were measuring my leg every day to guage swelling and marking it on my leg, so I didn’t think a little more graffiti would hurt!  ;D

Hospitals definitely aren't cheap but worth every penny.  When my daughter was hurt her bills were just shy of a million dollars.  She was in pediatric ICU for 21 days and then another 5 in the pediatric unit.  If I didn't have a heart attack opening them bills I never will.  It's amazing what a person can accomplish with faith and determination and there's no better motivator for determination than having to get it done for your family's sake.  I've been in some really bad situations over the years and I always said I'll never give up, not even after I'm dead and between that and God's help I always made it home.  Sometimes banged up but I always came home.

Yep- amazing what you can do with the right motivation! I just remember thinking..................”this is really gonna suck, but you just gotta do it! 2.2 miles...............let’s go! You got NO CHOICE!”  ::)

I'm sure it sucked big time but the alternative certainly is a lot more permanent and sucks the worst.  I'm a total believer in the theory of if you think and believe you can do it you will do it, never give up, and if you doubt me just sit back and watch me do it.

I normally don't read the "prayer" threads... so don't know why I read the entire thing..I just did... glad you made it.. it just wasn't your time... and your love of family, god and country saw you through.. for the record. Haven't heard an update in a week.

Getting better, but very SLOW progress!  ::).  Saw Dr. today and was hoping he would say I could start PT, but he wanted to defer to the Specialists(Toxicologists I see next Tuesday). So still no driving. Walking better with cane, but still have a ways to go! Still swelling and pain in ankle/foot. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks- sure thought I would be further along by now!  :(

Got good news at my follow up today! I got clearance to start PT, start driving and can go back to work in a couple weeks. Toxicologist said I am progressing as expected. He said it will probably be several more months until everything is back to “normal”, but that I should have no permanent damage. Just what I was hoping to hear!

Thanks for all the prayers guys- they work!!!!!!   8)

Amen to that, and I'll take it a step further in hoping the SOB died!  When it comes to snakes I shoot first and ask questions later.  In my book the best one is a dead one and if there was just one left on the earth and I ran into it there'd be none.  I'm glad you're continuing with your recovery and making steady progress.

Well, made it thru my first week of work. Thank God it was only 4 days. Had to lie down and prop the leg up at lunchtime and in the evenings when I get home. It’s swelling a little more since I am up on it most of the day now. But it is slowly improving. Doing well in PT and walking without a cane now.

Hope to get the kayak out on the water this weekend.

Thanks Stonecat- the toxicologist said I did everything right except I put ice on it for a short time waiting for the ambulance.

Thankfully, I had recently read somewhere what to do and what not to do. NOW the advice is don’t mess with the bite at all- no tourniquet, no cutting and sucking venom, just get to help ASAP! The quicker you get the first dose of anti-venom the better!

I do not know about these guys but you can fish all year round in my neck of the woods. However, hunting season is far more limited. Plus, it takes 1 good deer to fill a freezer and save hundreds of dollars on protein.

For my family, Venison = beef and upland and migratory birds = chicken.

My neck of the woods we have hunting opportunities all seasons ,between ,ctows, ground hogs and varmits,we can hunt all year long ,basically. DOVE HAS STARTED ALONG WITH EARLY GEESE.
I KNOW WE DON'T EAT CROW OR VARMIT BUT, THE OPPORTUNITY IS THERE.
I love huntingcat much as the next guy.
CHRIS CAN VERAFIE THAT.
I hunt all seasons.with all wepons.i own My own land.
I'm just saying this is the best time of year ,FALL,for fishing.BY FAR.
I agree with RUtnut.
Hunt saturday,fish Sunday.
CHRIS likes hunting better than fishing for the fact of LESS SNAKES AROUND HUNTING SEASON........
CHRIS,I SENT YOU A TEXT EARLY WEEK.
I NEVER HEARD BACK FROM YOU.
HOPE ALL'S WELL.

I'm sure we will be on SHAHOLA again before ice on,Rutnut,we we meet up.Enjoy your Family.Lets get some Deerdogs made this season,Ha........

CHEZ2, Early dove and early goose is open here now as well.

However, your statement of the best fishing being fall is your opinion and is most likely based on freshwater species in your area. The best fishing in my area is everyday of the year. It just depends what species you want to target, both fresh and/or salt. I do agree that fall is a great time of year for freshwater ponds and lakes, but its not the best time in general...... for me.

This doesn't prove anything. And since you want to take another dig at me both my largest fluke (haha) (over 13lbs) and largest striped bass (over 45lbs) (haha) came in June. So I guess that proves summer is the best right?  About 8 lbs better....?....is that how this works? We can have a pissing match all day long but i know your a good dude so im done here. Ok guys- let’s bring this back to the original topic- God is good and thanks to all your prayers it looks like I will be sitting in my treestand Thurs. morning down in Berks Co.!  8)

I tried my climber this week for the first time since the Snakebite and although it wasn’t pretty, or easy, I managed to climb up to height. I think the stiffness of the new snakeboots actually help to work the stirrups on the stand. Don’t think I could do it with my lightweight early season boots I usually wear.

It will be so nice to sit in a tree again and watch the sunrise and give me a sense of “normalcy!”  8)

KP- I gotta find a good one. The guy that I used to get them made up went out of business. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get that hotdog consistency as opposed to a sausage or bologna. Think I have it figured out now- I read that emulsification is the key. You have to use a food processor. Now I just have to figure out the spices. I should have it worked out by ice season.

If you want to cut grass I have a riding tractor and half my yard that still needs to get cut.  It took me six 1/2 hours to get the front half done on Saturday.  I've had my fill with all this d**n rain, this was the first time I got to cut the grass in a month.

Yes!  Let us know if you find anything, please...   I have several wildgame cook books here..  Never really thought about making them.  But this subject of Deer Dogs got me hungry ....
My son had some made 2 years ago from a deer butcher..  They are costly from a custom cut butcher.

I just bought a Ted Nugent cook book, didn't even look through it yet...  Ted's gotta have deer dogs!

Ol Snakebite (RuttNutt) congratulations on the does, is this a special program where you are able to harvest additional deer to feed the needy. I'm not a hunter but know most places you are limited to one buck  and need an additional tag to harvest a doe.

Mr.Clean, no and yes sort of. It's a special program where the licensed deer butchers can take donated deer and grind them for food banks that are associated with the Feed the Hungry program. In PA you can purchase extra doe tags and hunters use these tags to take does and donate them to the Feed the Hungry program when they can.

The hunt that Rutt was on was a special hunt for the United Bowhunters of PA that was started by a few individuals on the PA bowsite (Rut and myself included) to meet and hang out and it has grown over the years. The concept is for a committee to get written permission from farm and land owners for hunting rights and then provide that info to the members at the campout (although it is much more complicated than that). The goal is to take as many does from the farm areas to help the farmers and donate the meat to the Hunters sharing the harvest program.

Spider 1 thank you for the explanation, I have to assume the deer herd in Pa. is doing weel if hunters are being encouraged to purchased extra doe tags and then donate their deer to this program.

Post by: ‘Ol Snakebite (RuttNutt) on Sep 25, 2018, 07:09 PM
Sorry Mr. Clean, just saw this. But Spider nailed it. A few of us decided to get together for an early season bowhunt down in what was then called the “Special Regulations” area around Philly and up towards the Lehigh Valley back in 2005. You can get as many tags as you want there until the quota is gone and the season opens 2 weeks before the regular statewide season opens. (There are liberal tags there due to the high deer numbers in this suburban part of the state.)

It started as a one day hunt the first year and then the second year we hunted 2 days and camped in one of the guy’s back yard. By the 4th year (I think) we didn’t have enough room for everybody to camp so we moved it to the local campground. Each year we talked to the local farmers and got more and more property to hunt. Now we have more properties than we can hunt with 50 guys.

We encourage everyone to donate their deer to HSH and now most do.
It’s a WIN/WIN for everybody.

Here are the original members of the UBP 5C Hunt:

Hi Chez and Kingperch .... I noticed your posts about Big Bay at Oneida.    I only get up there a couple times a year, but 2 summers ago I got the biggest pike of my life by complete accident in Big Bay on a small spinnerbait and lightweight casting rod & no leader !    Alot of things went right for me to land that fish, especially considering the thick weeds there (he was released to fight another day).    Anyways, I was hoping you guys might be able to help me ... last summer, I took my wife up & the really nice state park public launch (I think it's called Oneida Shores) was closed ... it looked like it was closed permanently.  We searched & found some private marina way farther up the lake & were able to launch, but it wasn't ideal as I only have a 16' boat & prefer to launch closer to the end of the lake.    Can either of you guys recommend a boat launch near the I81 end of the lake now that the state park is closed ?

Also, if I'm not pushing my luck ... would either of you guys mind telling me what water depths you are targeting smallies in Big Bay ?    It's so weed choked - I find it pretty difficult to find any open water at all unless you leave the bay & get out to 14 ft or deeper ...

Much appreciated fellas ...

OMG...I have not been on this site for a long ,long time.....
I was just scrolling around and saw this. I am so sorry you had to go through this nightmare ruttnutt, and I am happy you are ok.

I am very wary of them timber rattler critters, and see them quite often in my yard here in Lordville, and along the Delaware . You are correct about how they blend in so well. Yellow phase, black phase, yellow/black and I even took pictures of a chocolate brown one 2 years ago, they all blend in to their habitat extremely well.
If any of you guy's fish the Delaware, or tribs, in the area from Hancock to Callicoon (NY side), or Starlight to Damascus (Pa. side) , please be aware that there are a lot of timber rattlers in this stretch. Last year (2018) I only saw and took pictures of 4 rattlers ...but summer of 2017 I took pictures of 17 different rattlesnakes ! some of those 17 I saw over and over during the summer, probably 30 sightings.... 5 in one bunch sunning themselves. They are generally pretty docile, and do not want anything to do with humans...but some can be more aggressive than others,.... and some of them "buzz" and some don't.

Some of you might have read in The New York Outdoor News last summer about the NY DEC had to remove a timber rattler from my neighbors car last summer. He opened the hood of his car to check the oil ,  and there was a large rattlesnake coiled up and started buzzing on top of his engine !
Thankfully that snake warned him.
I am sorry that I did not see this sooner to tell you that I am very, very happy that you are doing ok !

Imbit, I was off icefishing, sorry for late response. 😁 Oneida Shores is always open from 5:00 am till dark. Those are the times it opens and closes.

As far as the smallmouth fishing goes, our SMB were tough to find after the ice out last year. We managed to catch them in June, then it went downhill from there. We struggled to find them in tournaments all summer and even spent time during the week to locate them. I managed one SMB every trip, but, not the numbers or quality Oneida is known for. Largemouth bass push out a bit deeper as the water warms and weeds take hold. Cast along weed lines and rock piles with weeds. Football jigheads and trailers work well. Topwater early morning till the sun comes up. Jerkbaits and 1.5 crankbaits also produce. As the summer gets warmer, most cover should produce LMB. Toss senkos around/ under the cover and let them soak. They work good on Oneida. Hope this helps! Good luck!😎

Thanks choo choo!  I have snake boots, but want to get gaiters that I can wear with hiking boots and now thinking inside knee-high rubber boots or waders. Don’t wanna take ANY chances! Believe it or not, May 19 will be 10 months and I am still dealing with the effects!   ::)

That’s alright, my leg hurts (more) when I just see a pic of a snake now!  :o
