Steelhead Ladder/Staircase...Port Hope Ontario...Lots of Pics

On the weekend ChowderHead and I made a trip up the the staircase in Port Hope to see if the fish were running yet. Although not yet in full swing there was some good action and I took a wack of photo's

I'll start off with some shots of the runway. This area is a year round fish sanctuary and most fisherman just stand in awe.










Here are some shots from the stairs...man can these fish jump, it was incredible to watch them fling themselves up...then to hear that slap if they missed the target and hit the rubber mats.

At first we thought some of the fish were tagged, but as we got a closer look we notived that the marks we saw were wounds..some took up half the fishes body. here is one shot I could get



Once the small crowd moved I was able to get some overhead shots as well





I can still hear this guy hit the cemenet wall











As the fish are sunning their are Ministry guys on hand to do so tests as well as count the fish. We showed up just in time to get some pics of the guys in action.

First they hoist a cage full of fish out of water



then they give them a weigh in....Look at the length of these guys





Finally they do a scale sample test ( or so it appears)



Then the cool release as they give them a ride down a water slide...nice landing



Well thats all....I told you I took a wack of photo's...I think ChowderHead took some video, and if so he will probbably post it. It was a cool day, I lived most of my life 30 minutes away from this and vever got a chance to drop in...very cool

Great pictures,I work at a R.V. resort a half-mile from the Salmon/Steelhead hatchery on the Klamath  Its great to see the fish come through our park and then see them going up the ladder at the hatchery or spawn beds. Truely a sight to see whether you fish or not.

Thanx guys...my camera did all the hard work, I set her on high speed and fired off a couple hundred shots..you gotta love digital camera. I kept about 60 shots and shared these 20+.

.You would be amazed at the number of fish that come thru this ladder. When the run is over I will try to get you a total...they usually announce it in the paper.
