I like the Black's releases. It looks like a similar design to the Chamberlain, and I started using rubber bands to attach line to the release. Pretty pleased with the results.

Stick with the 8 lb. ball. You won't want to crank up any heavier than that. If you keep having problems with the Chamberlain release, try the Roemer release.
