IO vs. outboard
« on: Aug 24, 2018, 10:52 AM »
Not sure this the correct place to ask for help. But , I am looking to upgrade to 22 -25ish boat. I am interested in a WAC. And wanted some input from those of you who may have owned both IO's and boats with outboards in that size. I fished on many IO's but not an Outboard. How is it downriging and landing fish around a large outboards???
Thanks,

I have a 22' CC with an outboard and netting fish is not a problem.

I've had both but far prefer an outboard for everything except when the motor needs replacing. Inboards are a fraction of the cost to repower.

It's nice to have all that room inside the hull instead of a big hump of an inboard blocking access to the transom. Landing fish and using downriggers is no problem with an outboard. In fact it's way easier because your net guy can stand right next to you.

I grew up fishing out of an I/O and now use a 4stroke outboard. I will never go back to a I/O. Maintenance on the new 4 strokes are a dream and quiet and self draining. Money is the biggest difference and I believe in the long haul the outboard will win if taken care of. Landing fish with down riggers isn't much of an issue just a learning curve, speed and where to fight the fish, every boat is different.

Thanks guys. I have been fishing a 17 ft. Lund with 2 riggers since 1990.  Looking to go bigger I think it is  my mid life crisis purchase....
I think I will jump on the deck of a few and see what calls to me...

I have owned both on a LOT of boats.

Will probably never own another I/O.
Takes up too much room in the boat.

Also, outboards are lighter.

The new 4 stroke outboards make I/O's unnecessary.

And as far as fishing around the motor............get a net with a longer handle.

Lastly, get a kicker too!!!!!
Not a trolling plate, or drift bags.
An effin kicker!!!!

Go do a search on "kicker" here in MFF.
The topic has been thoroughly flogged to death.

Haha thanks! Yes, yes I know, it's definitely NOT coast guard approved but I do put it up front at least when I'm actually cooking instead of next to the outboard and on top of the gas tank like it is in the picture! Of course there was one time when I put it over the hatch that has all the lifejackets in it :-X :o I realized that was probably not a great idea either!
