Dr. IceGeek - I think the mount you did looks better than the first one, more life like, WOW!  My only suggestion might be to fully extend the dorsal since that seems to be the more common posture for perch.  Colors look great and the eye is very good.  Most professionally done fish mounts I see look very artificial when it comes to the white bellies of the fish.  Almost like they use too bright of a white color and extend it too far up the body.

Bobman,
Thanks for the kind words and feedback.   I too noticed that lots of people use WAY too much white on the bellies of many fish.  I tried to use many layers of colors to give the paint a little more depth but not overdo it either.  I really appreciate the constructive criticism though,  of course I'm still learning quite a lot, and I am certainly making mistakes, but I try and learn from each mistake I make.  Thanks again

I agree with Bobman on the perch......the dorsal fin has to be extended but man that crappie looks GREAT! Awesome job!!

Really nice work!  If that's just a hobby, then you have a lot of talent, and could do this as a sideline to your day job!

Monophil,
I was kind of thinking something along those lines.  Art for me was always a release (in addition to hunting and fishing) and it seems to be the perfect combination between two things that I really like to do.  I picked up a book last year and started reading about fish taxidermy and then scoured the internet to find info.  Although it seems that many taxidermists aren't really willing to share their knowledge, so much of it has just been trial and error.  Again, I appreciate the kind words.  At some point maybe I'll open something on the side......

Here's my first mount, which I got back the other day. It's a 26", 7 lb. walleye that I caught through the ice on Oneida Lake this past winter (at the January IceShanty Get-Together). This is a trophy for this lake. The fish has a hanger on the back, but I think I'm going to have it put on a plaque.

Zach,
Very Nice walleye!  I've caught a lot of walleyes out of Onieda but even close to that monster.   As far as the hanger on the back...give it some time.  I think it will grow on you.  I don't really like the looks of fish on plaques as it seems to detract from the fish and also tends to make them look darker for some reason.
