For those connoisseurs of fine fillet eating... the white perch are starting to show up. Caught a dozen last evening on the big lake. Including 6 of the largest sunfish I've seen in awhile.

Love white fish (or silver/white bass) caught in the colder waters of spring. The flesh is firm. And although they aren’t as mild as yellow perch or walleyes, they are not very “fishy” tasting at this time of year.
One way we like to do them is over an open fire and then tossed in wing sauce.
Great snack at night with friends around a campfire.

Guys will be netting floaters any day now

I've heard about that , but haven't witnessed it yet!

Dumb question maybe, why they float do they die after spawn?

Normally they don’t, but for some reason on Winni this happens. Maybe they can’t pass the eggs and it causes them to float upside down. Either way you can get a bunch of fillets with just a net.

Correct, to many eggs. It’s a sight to see.
I don’t know about legality, never tried it but have seen it and could easily see how you can. They do not die after though Dirt just to clarify

I can think of 5 places it happens on the big lake every year without a hitch but I won’t say bc of all the Scumbag non posters. But you can PM me anyone who contributes.

That happens with yellow perch too. I lose about a half a dozen a year in my rearing pond because they have trouble passing eggs. Once the eggs start coming out they absorb water and increase in size. Apparently it plugs the urogenital orifice?

Very interesting I bet the eagle has figured this out too. At first I was thinking how do you know if they are any good, any floating fish I've usually seen are bloating. At least they're not getting wasted got me thinking need to hit up the local white perch spot and get a couple for the fryer. I guess should probably bring a net along just in case

Are they dead, or dying and floating?
I figure that if they've been floating for awhile, they might be a little off.
Plus, the eagles, hawks, osprey and loons might be having their fill as well?

The sunfish are going into pre-spawn and some of them can be outright HUGE.
My simple goal when ice fishing is to hopefully (and usually) get a "hand-sized" sunfish.
I tend to get my biggest in late spring/early summer, some really egg-packed cows and some nice beefy bulls.
Always a good catch!

No not dead just loaded and plugged up with eggs. They recover
