Safe boating certificate
« on: Apr 04, 2023, 08:20 PM »
Don't forget guys, we will all need one by 2025. Like it or not it's mandatory. Best sign up for a course now before the big rush next year.  Go to NYS Parks and Recreation and search for your area and or a date you wish and look for a class. They fill up fast. I'm doing it in May. There are some online options available, but they can be expensive.

It's free on line in FL.
Of course NY charges for it.

I got mine in 2017 because I was taking a trip to Canada and to rent a boat it said I needed
a boating safety certificate. The place never asked to see my certificate and rented me a boat anyway. Well now I am prepared for the new NY law that is coming in 2025.

You're a hoot Trapp   yes we can probably take a Fla course on line, but to actually use it we'll have to tow our boat to Fla. Not worth it to me.

Fishin-Mission,  Not saying you got bad info, but I rent a cottage in Quebec every couple years which comes with a boat. I have never heard this mentioned up there. Great walleye fishin there

Yup.  I had no choice living in CT.  Can remember the class vividly as there was a mom and sons asking every insane question you could ask.  Made for a long 8 hours.

I did mine online.. you could do the course at your leisure as long as you passed the test at end of each section..  I don't rememeber the cost but it was minimal!!!

I took it 3-4 yrs ago Trap, before NY came out with their mandate.
I actually wondered what you ask and was going to check into it but never did because it wouldn't matter in my case.
So I never looked.

However...........I just went back and looked.
Not sure if my Florida course certificate is accepted in NY and won't worry about it anymore.
But I did find a FREE safe boating course for NY, that is accepted.

Well, if I still have a boat in 2025….I’ll take the course…..again. Took one when I was 12 I think. At the Coast Guard auxiliary in Charlotte.
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

I believe the course is free but you pay for the certificate if you want one. You can have it added to your drivers license for free at your next renewal.

I did the coast guard course at lake pleasant when I was 12 also, I think I still have the certificate. I wonder if that would count as coarse completed.
