Title: Lake Michigan perch
Post by: Spencerville on Nov 24, 2019, 01:48 AM
Anyone ever hit the perch on Michigan this time of year? Monday looks pretty nice. Any tips? Ate they in the harbors or out on the main lake still?

I have heard of a pretty good perch bite over in Cal Harbor.  I am not certain if you need an Illinois license but I understand the perch are available and most launch out of Hammond and head either out to the break wall or head further towards the river.  Hope this helps...

The perch fishing just west of Hammond and I believe in Illinois water is still quite good.  I really do not know the name of the body of water but we launch out of Hammond and head north and slightly west.  It is short run and we go up a river type body of water that meanders under the sky way bridge.  Anyway, on the way up the river, you look for slack water on the sides behind jut outs and barges and watch your electronics.  The perch are not everywhere but tend to stack up in large schools.  With the limit being 15, it is not too difficult to limit out with a little effort.  You pass by groups of people fishing from the shoreline randomly located.  I purchased an Illinois license as I could not get a clear cut answer about boundaries and reciprocity of license.  The annual Illinois license, I think, was $30.   Anyway, this past Sunday, the wind was howling and we made the run with 6 people in the boat and limited out with 90 perch in about 2 hours.  We had several at 12" but the majority were 9-10".  It is such a bonus to be out this time of year, with friends and to be real productive on the water.  Give it a try...

Thanks for the report. Dont think I will take the boat out, but, may try off shore. I like the old scrap iron bridge,. Think it is the closest to the lake.

Fish by the skyway 95th area.  Slips closer to the lake are producing smaller for me. Bigger a little further in off the lake.

If you have the Illinois and Indiana you are good anywhere over there. Plus a Lund should give you special privileges hehe. Indiana only gets you the channel no slips and not very far up the calumet river. Inside the far out break walls on this side of the river is alll Indiana, even though it’s pretty much south Chicago.

abis - I would think fish are being taken from shore. There is no shortage of people trying but I have only accessed this area by boat and would not begin to know access paths or the safety of the neighborhoods.  I would agree and the larger fish seem to be a bit upstream, so to speak from the big lake and would also say, I have never fished in a more noisy environment with the opportunity to have these pretty darn large barge/tugs somewhat silently glide up in a somewhat sneaky way.  It might be all the additional noise around you that allows these barges to kinda sneak up on ya.
