I seen two people with a lantern last night at a creek that runs into the river ......I heard beepers ......and a see Wal-Mart stocked up on beer ....it must be real close ;D
-

-
Ice on my bullhead spot still.... :whistling:

If it’s good ice Drill a hole!
-
seen 3 lanterns out last night and one guy with a bend pole as I drove by!!!!!
-
if we get that warm rain I think it's time to go get some of the slimy beady eyed horned bottomfeeders ;D
-
Yep might be time to get some mud guzzlers
-
I've got to find some new spots. I used to love it. I haven't fished bullhead in many years due to too many A-holes overtaking the old haunts. I don't have the temperament to deal well with them.
-
hey go with sully he'll show you how to use a bucket ......you won't have no more problems
-
hey go with sully he'll show you how to use a bucket ......you won't have no more problems
Omg , sully called to tell me that story about bucket head , almost leaked some water 😜 ,it seemed to teach a little respect , I can’t speak for everyone but my tolerance isn’t what it use to be either
-
I got 2 over at lake neatahwanta this morning and had a eagle watching me from a tree .......lot of wood ducks ;D
oh darn I just slipped and let out a secret spot
-
Trapper get some leeches and follow me ...I'm good with bullheads ..no limit so I don't have to count :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie:...

Awesome John
-
john good job buddy
-
Planning on going in the am. Anyone been out since last week.
-
Check my post above....went yesterday on the river near Cayuga lake. Caught a good mess...some on shrimp...mostly worms...good luck.
-
Hit my favorite pond this evening. Pretty slow yet. Water is really cold there. But it's a dozen more than I had.
It'll only get better.
Rg
-
pond bullheads are the best tasting to me and a doz is a good meal for 2 people
-
Yeah Trappwr, these guys are only 12" or so and some a bit smaller. But, man they taste so much better that those big old lake bullheads.
Rg
-
bullheads can be great just like ANY trout or salmon
cook them all slow next to a fire on a tire
throw the fish away and eat the tire
haha
-
I guess you remember that I don't care for trouts.
One thing I always do with bullhead is keep them in a cooler of fresh water for a couple days before cleaning them. I change the water 5 or 6 times. Kind of flushing them out a little. I think it makes them taste way better.

I do the same thing....it's amazing to see the water after just one day...the stuff that comes out of them.....having said that...if I have any that swallowed the hook I clean them right away and eat them that night and have to say..they're still pretty darn good. Only eat river bullhead....much better than the lake/bay's bullhead.
-
Sorry guys. I just don’t like them. A lot better eating fish out there.
-
toss them in a rain water tank for a few days.
bullhead gumbo.
-
I just went and got a dozen and in the grease they went ;D
-
Sorry guys. I just don’t like them. A lot better eating fish out there.
Compared to spring bullhead, I don’t know many.
-
I have not gone bullhead fishing in years.......sounds like fun
-
sean it's relaxing
and I guess everyone has different taste ......I don't like bullheads all the time but I really enjoyed these ;D and RG is right smaller ones really are a lot better I have a 100 gal cooler i'll toss the next batch in for a few days
I want some for the BBQ too
steak taste better then burger but sometimes I just want a good greasy burger off the grill ;D
-
I have not gone in a long time but people who don't like them usually it's because they ate summer fish not cold water spring fish
-
You guys should come to Indiana. We have tons of bullheads. Nobody targets them.
-
It's a spring ritual around here. I've been going out for bullhead since......well......1960 or so. My brother and I used to go bullhead fishing when I was a kid.
Trapper's correct. It's very realaxing to sit by a pond or lake in early spring. Listen to the peepers and the hiss of a 50 year old Coleman lantern, chase the bugs, catch a few fish and have a great meal.
Rg
-
its not that at all greensider i catch them for people in seneca lake in feburary and that water is just a degree or two above freezing,if you get a south wind there in winter you can get them...just not a fan is all
-
i like fishing for them along with cats just sitting chilling out ,but give them away, i have plenty of people who take them
-
Really wanted to get out this weekend, but we are working non stop on the homestead. We built a new home last fall, and this spring we are building a pole barn with a bit of help from ole KP. So we sent the weekend taking everything we could ot of the old... and I mean old barn, putting it in a pod, and getting ready for the new one.
I digress, Like Rg and Trapp said, Smaller ones are better than big ole Lakers, Yellers are better than Brown's, and Blacks from a spring fed pond, or stream are the best of them all :D Trapp, try throwing a few in a bag with XVOO, cajun and garlic for 12 hours, then cook em low and slow over some charcoal.... man oh man what a spring treat!
-
Try filleting them, top with home made salsa and Parmesan cheese, wrapped in parchment paper and roasted on the Weber......Charcoal that is!
Oh man!
Rg
-
i got 8 in the cooler swimming around fed the raccoon two white perch and a dink yellow perch (i counted him on my limit) and i am prebaiting for trapping so all legal ;D....got home picked up 3 dozen crawlers my back hurts so having a rolling rock ;D...all 10 to 12 inchers
-
Pre baiting sure more like want and waste shame shame shame
-
Pre baiting sure more like want and waste shame shame shame
wrong wrong wrong green signs all along lake neatahwanta says to dispatch any white perch you catch and a dink perch that swallowed the hook and bleeding from his gills is not waste to toss to a raccoon ........waste ? do i care ...no i don't , please go hug a tree over there >>>>>
ya know picking nightcrawlers can make a old man sore :rotflol: but our bait supply is restocked ,i will be heading out in a little while to add more fish to the cooler ( RG probably has me looking like a fool keeping these things in a cooler of fresh water) ...... i am planning on truying the grilled bullhead recipes ;D i am also going to toss some in my air fryer ....worked good on walleyes
-

You're right about picking the night crawlers - I never used to "let" myself come back in unless I had picked at least 100 in a night - now if I get to 75 I don't even think about keeping picking - hahaha. I think you meant hug a pickerel, not hug a tree ;D The raccoons (and foxes and coyotes and eagles) in my neighborhood just named me their "fisherman of the year" :D
-
in Phoenix on the river we had a hurt blue heron and all the fisherman last year tossed him dink perch ....he healed up ....he still comes around but now is fishing for himself .....i have pickers of him eating perch i tossed him and a video i'll try to post it later i have had a eagle hit the creek i was fishing and grab a trout but i have never fed one ....that would be so cool
-
You guys should come to Indiana. We have tons of bullheads. Nobody targets them.
And big ones too. I caught a yellow bullhead once that was close to a world record. Lots of big brown bullheads in Clear Lake east of Freemont.
-
Tradition, rite of spring, whatever you call it.....we always enjoy a good bullhead chowder with fresh spring leaks (ramps) wild onions. Just something we've been doing, enjoying, for years. The onions need a few weeks though. :thumbup_smilie:
-
What methods do you guys use in the rivers? I want to try this

They are cool birds - I mostly fish the small lakes in Madison county - the eagle(s) don't come down to feed when we are on the ice but I've seen them come down after we pack up and are in the truck to take the odd pickerel that might have been left behind (accidentally of course - once in a while 1 seems to slip out of my sled some how) ;D . I've seen 7 of various ages at once feeding on a deer carcass on the ice a couple years ago too. Pretty impressive site

coveralls hot tea and my heater is going with me tonight ....but I'm going to try ;D
Sounds like fun. I was born to hunt and fish but this think called work takes up 5 of my 7 days a week to fish. It's just snot right. Should be a 3 day work week and 4 day weekend
-

-
iceman nice hey did you use crawlers or bloodsuckers??? I can't find any blood suckers yet
Davenports bait in sodus has them
-
I only use blood suckers. I drove to Farmington and bought a pound off a guy that is trapping them. My bait guy should be getting bigger ones soon. Guys to the right and left of me were catching them also last night and i doubt everyone was using leeches. So they are hot right now.
-
Hit my little pond yesterday afternoon for a couple hours. Nada! Water temps dropped a lot and shut it down. Should pick up a lot this weekend. If not I'll head someplace else.
Rg
-
I tried last night and the wind was directly in my face from the east and I wasn't prepared for it. So I stayed until I couldnt stand it and left with 10 big ones.
-
they were pretty slow last night I got 3 and some white perch for the coon .......
-
Trapper u get my message

Try the river...they're hitting pretty good right now....did you ever try wide water?
John
-
Only fished cats at the widewaters. Lots of them in there.
Did better this afternoon. Got a dozen. I used to drive all over the place for them. Long pond, third creek, bay bridge, Honeoye, i-Bay..... these fish are 4 miles from home. Best of all, they hit better during the afternoon than way into the dark. Fits an old man's schedule much better.
Which river are you talking about?
Rg
-
I did a couple doz and I'm home having a beer by 9
life is good

Well I'vgot. Big fat cooler full to clean in the morning. Some good size too. Got there around 3 it was 70 and calm. When I left at 5:30 it was raining and 43. They shut down completely.
Not that I'm surprised.
But, it's just getting started in my favorite little pond and there's fish for the fry👍
Rg
-
Nice weather and plenty of catching, great day RG
-
I got 28 and horned right in the palm of the hand >:(
-
Looks like I'll get another shot at it tomorrow Fred. I sure like bank fishing. Been doing it since I was a kid. Tried an old trick of mine today and it paid off. Clipped a bobber to the barrel swivel above the leader and kept the bait just off the bottom. They took it 3 to 1 over a bottom rig.
Rg
-
Gee...that's too bad Trap.

oh I did the magic bullhead horning cure and it's fine now but it hurt for a minute ,little guy got me

Single malt or straight bourbon Trap?
-
scotch I like bourbon not so much ....but nope you just have to get the bullhead slime out of it I have a extractor kid and it draws it out
then some antibactin and your all good to go
-
I've never been stuck.
My grampa taught me how to handle them and to watch out for the 3 stickers.
I've seen a few people over the years who got stuck and it got nasty red and painful.
Only lasted for a couple days, but still something I will try to avoid.
All cats and bullies.
Glad you guys are having fun.
-
I had a great time last few days catching them
-
I've been stuck plenty of times. Now I just use a towel to handle them. Saves all that good booze and a hole in the hand. A lot easier to hang on to them too.
Rg
-
Never forget when I took my kid brother-in law to Redfield reservoir camping and in his bare feet stepped on a dead bullhead and stuck him good...the poor kid was hurting....felt so bad for him.

Did you feel bad before or after you stopped laughing at him.

Got another 20 or so today. Temperature dropped around 4:00 and they just shut down.
Anyway they were really big for this particular pond.
Rg

-
Well Races got rained out so I went fishing slow night ended up with 3 nice catfish

Nope. Only for channel cats.
Rg.
-
channel cats are fun
-
I'd love to target channel cats but only ever caught them by mistake...either bullhead fishing or fishing for walleye....any hints Bob or Trapp?

Almost lost my rod Saturday night. Yes have seen many of poles go for a swim from cat fish.
-
Open bail, slip sinker rig, chicken livers wrapped up in egg sein. Rubber band around the pole near the bail. Loop the line through the rubber band and set when it stops running. No lost poles.
I sometimes use a piece of a craft foam with a slit hung on the line as a strike indicator.

Have to try it pretty good current where I been fishing

Anyway, brought home 20 today in just under 2 hours. Left to get ready for some dock fishing tomorrow. Gonna chase some gills for a change.
I'll hit the pond a couple more times, but, I've got plenty in the freezer for this year.
Rg
-
Cool Bob
Throwing them in the freezer yet?

Late lunch today.

hey that's not a weber!!!! nice job!
-
I've got 3 gallon bags full in the freezer Mac. First nice happy hour night and I'm breaking out the big deep fryer for the gang to do a fish fry. I'll make a few more trips to the pond before the bite is done. This temperature drop will probably shut them down for a day. Tomorrow looks perfect.
Rg
-
bite wasn't real impressive last night I think i'll try up in the marsh
-
Only managed 3 at the pond this afternoon. But...that's 3 more than I had already.
Rg
-
On a good note, I replenished my worm supply on my walk this morning. Not as many as I expected, but the town rolls all the soccer fields and the rest of the park each year with a big highway roller. That must have had an effect.
Rg
-
Did ok last night 14 plus 4 keeper perch and half dozen dink perch that went back in to grow up. Hit the north end of Cayuga Lake. Bullheads were hitting before and after sunset, the biggest hit after 9. I need to replenish my worm supply but the current weather forecast does not look to nice.

Were your bullheads clean or did they have grubs in them

No grubs in the bullies I pulled. Is that a problem where you fish?
Rg
-
They were clean.
-
Yes grubs are a problem around here I havent fished for bullheads in 3 yrs because of it..lots on seneca river and 3 places I fish on cayuga lake have been bad .mudlocks was bad state park bad mayspoint on seneca river were bad bonnet bridge all full of grubs
-
Last bunch I caught on Seneca river... all were grub free. have had them in the past.
-
i cleaned a lot of bullhead this year found a couple with grubs
-
Only got 3 yesterday afternoon. This yoyo weather has things all fouled up. Should straighten out this week. I think shallow ponds are affected more dramatically by extreme temperature variation.
Might have to try for some perch instead.
Rg
-
oneida river shut off for me too .....we got 7 the other evening
-
It'll come around. Rain this week and near 70 on Thursday. Should get them going.
Rg
-
i was surprized how many smaller catfish i got this year..... still fun
i haven't payed attention to the water temp but i'm sure it's like a yo yo one day i'm in a tee shirt next day i'm in my carhartt bibbs lol
-
All this talk about those mud guzzlers
Made me hungry , so cooked up a 1/2# of these 😉 a good friend shared some of his smelt he got , thanks again CK

Oh....those look good Fred. Reminds me of the days of filling buckets at Russel Station on Lake O. Staying up till all hours cleaning smelt, breading and tossing them in the fryer. Beer....smelt......friends......don't get much better than that. F
Alas, the smelt are gone from there.
Tried the pond this afternoon.......nada!
Rg
-
Went to the river...slow...bunch of white bass but bullhead were slow to start....only ended with 20 for two of us.
Icejohn
-
Thanks Bob , they are pretty much gone here also , I to remember cleaning with several brews those were good times for sure
-
Thanks Bob , they are pretty much gone here also , I to remember cleaning with several brews those were good times for sure
Yea I remeber as a kid going with my Papa asked him the other day when we could go again he doesnt know where to get them anymore
-
I've never had a problem with grubs in the river until the water gets warm. Then I start seeing the grubs in the river bullheads. I will say though that all the ones I've caught north end of cayuga lake at the state park, above the locks and down at cayuga all have been full. Just gotta know where and when to go and you won't have a problem. Just went out last night and caught my personal best bullhead and released her cause she was full of eggs and came home with a solid bucket full with little water. Chilly night but the bite was steady.
-
Iceman were u In your normal spot ..and did u find leeches yet.mite give it a go one night this weekend
-
you won't catch no stinking bullheads man you can't catch a cold :rotflol:
wait and go with me and AL and we'll let you wind them in again

(https://i.postimg.cc/xkFKH1Tf/IMG-2652.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xkFKH1Tf)
Had an additional surprise catch too.
(https://i.postimg.cc/JsrJ2ks7/IMG-2650.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/JsrJ2ks7)
About 2 feet across. Luckily it just opened its jaws and let go of my hook.
Love that kevalar line.
Rg

get the weber!!!!! turtle on the half shell
-
I don't know about that Trap. He was probably older than me.
Rg
-
Hit a local hole this morning. Struggled to get hookups on chicken liver in spawn net and no bites on leeches. Caught a rudd on the liver and filleted it for cut bait. Put eight BIG bullheads in the bucket in the next hour. No tape with me but the biggest was in the 17-18" range. New plan next trip. lol
-
Yeah, there were some real hogs in my catch as well. All on night crawlers.
Rg

A guy next to me had crawlers and his bite was slow too. He fished from 5:00 a.m to 11:00 and had 7 small bullies. He did catch a bunch of gills and rudd though.

Did you ever try worms cut up in spawn net? Puts out a ton of scent. I go to it when the water starts warming and the bluegills become a pain.

Rg
No, this was my first try with the liver/netting. I was missing a lot of bites with it but I think it was a lot of panfish, rudd, and golden shiners as evidenced by what the other guy was hooking on the worms. I have a tub of wrapped liver left and will give it another shot in a different hole. Such a mess to tie up but it definitely stays on the hook. Just concerned about the bite to hookup ratio. Maybe just a bad morning for it. If it clears this afternoon, may make a run to Honeoye for pannies.
-
Try circle hooks. #4 Gamakatsu octopus. Don't snatch the hook to set it. Just put pressure on the fish. Hooks in the corner of the mouth 99.9% of the time.
All ready for this afternoon. Rain or shine!
(https://i.postimg.cc/LJmnXkVj/IMG-0823.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/LJmnXkVj)
Works well with redworms too.

I'll keep them in mind and the crawlers sacks as well. I may make a run to Mac's favorite catfish hole in the coming months. Been a long time since I caught a real catfish.
-
Used some this afternoon.
(https://i.postimg.cc/R3B6jTK2/IMG-2654.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/R3B6jTK2)
They're only good for a couple fish. Then the netting gets sloppy and the fish don't get to the hook. But they're easier to handle than worms in some situations. I was equal sacks vs whole crawlers. 15 in an hour and a half was ok by me. Cleaned 22 this morning with the biggest measuring 16". Today's were smaller thank heavens.
Might go back tomorrow for a while.
Bought some livers. I was thinking about catfish as well.

I've filleted the bigger ones, especially if they're getting fried. If they're whole, I'll slice them vertically a few times to let grease or heat from the grill get deep into the bone. I'm not a huge fan of bullhead to eat but it's a rite of spring, have to have a few or I don't feel like it's really spring. Love to sit peacefully and catch them but I give more away than I keep.
-
I have to admit I like them more as I get older before i'd eat a meal or two a year now I filled the freezer with them and been eating a lot of them ....I really like the smaller ones better and I do like them on the grill with the salsa like RG recommended ...and fried
-
:'( cats and bullheads are way overrated. . ;)
-
Well, less competition anyway.
I fillet the larger ones and depending on how I want to cook them, leave them whole or chunk them up. Yes, they're different from white meat fish like perch and gills, but, they have a great flavor. Especially in the spring from cold waters.
I've eaten bullhead in the spring for more years than I can really count.

I have a really cool spring fed stream that never warms up much and has a gravel bottom where I grew up catching Bullies. They are the black ones with the white bellies and rarely grow over 10 inches. gotta wait till the end of may usually for the water too drop, but when it does, man oh man 2 dozen 7 inchers on the Coals...... 8)

Tried in the fairhaven pond last night and got 1. The weeds are starting to fill in so guessing it's time to move onto another spot and try again.

Tried for an hour this morning without a single bite. Went home to mow my swamp.

I have a tub of bait I want to use up and that will be it for me unless I chase real cats over mac's way. Winds already 20+ here, may make a bank fishing road trip today.

If you do Greg - let me know.
I might join you.
I have tons of work out there to do when I get back, but that doesn't mean I cannot work on my head a little bit too.
