Title: Irondequoit bay Pike and eye
Post by: capt hookem on May 18, 2004, 10:37 PM
Pike was 34 inches but only weighed 6 1\2 pounds  walleye was 27 inch and 8 1\2 pounds and after eating both of them I went from 202 to 208 pounds   ;D  aaarrrr(http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v44/framerjeff/wallleye_and_northern_20040006.jpg)

Two nice fish! Did you consider C & R? Nothing wrong with keeping a few for the table but without C & R there would be nothing left to fish for.

You are correct, nothing wrong with C&R sometimes, but if everybody released everything then we would have lakes full of small stunted fish.  That is why most lakes are full of dink bass with very few true lunkers,  in the old days people caught and kept their fish and the fisheries were better off.

amen crappie 66 too many fish to little habitat = stunted fish  I do release fish especially pike and if I didnt release fish that day thier would have been 8 pike 6 largemouths 7 sheephead and 1 brown I caught out in the lake first thing in the am I only take what I eat and not an ounce more but I got to tell you all  them dink perch this icefishin season I through back made me wonder if I was doing the right thing.. there were days I just wanted to pile them up on the ice and let the gulls have a feast As for walleyes I dont think I have ever released a legal one in my life but I have never let one go to waste either.. Theyre just so gooood   aaaarrrrrrrr 8)

Everyone is right. The best thing you can do for a fishery is to selectively harvest, which means keeping the smaller ones and letting the big ones go. I know it can be difficult but in my opinion the 13" walleye and trout and bass taste better than the 18" ones anyway.

13 inch walleye and trout are illegal in finger lakes NY

15 inch is the limit

yes they are illegal 15 and up on lake ontario also... they dont want you to keep the little ones.. huh wonder why since alot of people on this site say throw the big ones back Maybe them biologists that create the laws on what to keep and what to throw back are just plain dumb.. but when I pay for my license and they give me the rule book and tell me if I dont follow them their gonna fine me I tend to listen to themI like living in a world where people voice their opinions freely I just like it more when they back their opinions up with facts and the fact in this state is their is no law protecting the big fish right now but if they do decide its neccesary to put slot limits on them Iwill follow the rules but until then pass the tartar sauce

exactly!!!!!!!   I love eating fish and if we don't eat fish then what is the reason for fishing for them?.... Are we using there fear of being caught for our pleasure only?  Whatever makes them run away from the "captor"  to appease our desires???  I will throw pike and musky and pickerel back too bony, and I like the fight when I fish for them, but if it is legal to keep them, I am keeping them. NY DEC stocks for me to eat so I will eat.  Don't get me wrong I belive is CR but eating them is not wrong, and all those that look down on those of us that eat them need to re-evaluate their thoughts????  You C/r but don't attack us! thanks...  Sorry I got into it again

Way to go Capitan. Nice pair  ;)

BTW I have never eaten a 13" walleye, but I can tell you that a 15" tastes every bit as good as an 18" or a 20" or a 22", 23", or 30". They are all yummy, however I refuse to keep a female walleye directly prior to or duning the spawn no matter what the size. The males on the other hand....not so lucky depending on what they are. We don't have any rules here governing that, its just the way I do it. We do have mim size limits of 15" on most lakes and rivers in this area.

Our bass rules here for largemouths sound like your walleye rules mostly. 15" and up is legal to keep in 95% of the lakes, but no smaller.
In a few lakes, there is a 12"-15" slot limit where you have to let them go. And trust me, I do not look down on people for eating fish, and if it was implied that way I am sorry. I do eat fish as well, and every walleye I catch I keep, except if it is a huge spawning female. Walleye do taste great, but in my opinion not quite as good as a real trout!!!

Still very nice fish and you are entitled to keep LEGAL fish. I disagree with sports people taking it upon themselves to manage a fishery. You may do more harm than good. Throwing dink perch on the ice only to have the gulls eat them is considered "game waste" and is illegal in NY and most states. Seen alot of that crap in Mass where you can't even eat the perch because the water (Hoosatonic River) polluted from GE and still the perch are thrown on the ice and left there. That's a waste. Ignorance is not an excuse either, two days ago I was fishing for stripers in the Connecticut and a guy caught a 24" pike which he thought was a pickeral and kept it. In mass the pike must be 28" Man that really ticks me off. You can't have it both ways - A body of water that produces numbers or trophy fish. Some may argue they like to go out and catch something, even "smaller" ones but others prefer mto catch less but larger fish. But you can't complain about catching only 1 trophy every few days if you don't want to be the one catching 50 "dinks" in an outing. Nothing against what everyone has posted, just venting.

Just want to make this clear, nothing wrong with keeping LEGAL fish to eat, but wasting them is just ridiculous.
