Title: Slipbob's 2005 Walleye Chronicles! (page 12 nice walleyes)
Post by: slipbob on May 09, 2005, 03:41 PM
Finally it's here.  Walleye season opened on Saturday here in NY.  I got out early in the morning for some shorefishing down at the "local walleye pond" and we hit the water a little before 4am.  The bite wasn't very good with only a couple fish taken.  I got one keeper and lost another.  I'm getting too old to be getting up at 2am to go fishing I'll tell ya that.  :P
Here's the wally I got in the am.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv89%2Fslipbob%2Fspring05%2F602e0a7b.jpg&hash=ae83e3ba2c7ce69e37fb130ce56a2275)[/img]
I attempted to catch some sleep Saturday but it didn't happen and I managed to get my second wind later in the afternoon and we went back after em.  The first spot I tried yielded two keepers and I had one fish follow my lure up to the bank but he wouldn't hit.  As we were leaving that spot a kind older fella asked me if I wanted his walleye because he only caught one and didn't want to clean just one so of course I said, sure, I'll take that fish off your hands.  I gave it a good home in my frying pan.  ;D  We hit up one of my favorite spots next and the fishing was still slow but I managed to get 3 within about 10 minutes.  2 nice 21"ers and one about 18".  So not too bad of a day, with me getting my limit between the 4 I caught and the one fish I was given.  Here's the two better fish I caught Saturday night around 10:30pm.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv89%2Fslipbob%2Fspring05%2Fe21e6dee.jpg&hash=d3acad6f124d73a0af38d4e7db41911a)[/img]
Here's the cooler of eyes from Saturday night.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv89%2Fslipbob%2Fspring05%2F65184d51.jpg&hash=8dfe0a7243d0d05c0ac3449bafbb1ff2)[/img]
So that's that.  I'm WAY behind on some projects that must be done around the house and I'm also in the midst of starting my own business that's going to require me to work a LOT more hours now so I'm going to be fishing a lot less, which sucks, but it's a change for the better that will hopefully give me a lot more time in the future to fish than I would have if I stay in my present job.  I'm hoping to get back out once more this week but if not I'll be fishing again this weekend for sure.  Stay tuned for more chronicle updates sometime in the next week when I can get the chance to go again.

Yee-ha! Let the chronicles begin!
What's this crap about working too much to fish?
Are you sure about this, SB?  ;D

I don't have much time during the summer to fish either,
but one can always make time!
Best of luck with your business. It isn't easy, trust me...

Keep the walleye pics coming!  8)

Your walleye lake must kinda be like my walleye lake. Not really many trophies but enough 13-24" walleyes to keep everybody happy, plus the cleanest water= the tastiest fish ;) Slip, thought I'd tell ya I caught 3 walleyes yesterday before the storm hit on a 1/4 oz. gold cleo, the fish were on the flats. Where have you been finding the walleyes this time of year? Nice fish by the way :)

Once again you pulled through. Just one question (you may have been asked this before) With all the fish you eat that you catch aren't you worried about the new warning here in NY. As far as I know almost all NY lakes are on the list. Granted you proboly get more poison from our air, but you eat a lot of fish from these waters. I'm just curious on you feeling since you do eat most of your walleye

The alcohol in the beer kills off any poisons or toxins that may be present in the fish, besides isn't everything bad for us now days, we will all die eventually.

Exactly. We're all going to get cancer and die so why not eat a few highly-toxic fish while we're at it? :P

That first walleye in your last update is a very nice one. Good job.
I think slipbob always mentions his water is the cleanest around, so maybe it isn't on the toxic list thingy in new york?
I'm glad we only have a couple lakes with that problem in CO, and it is natural for the most part. I feel sorry for the pollution you guys have.

Regardless of the size SB, any time you can catch fish in numbers has to be a blast...especially if the tackle matches (i.e. light tackle for panfish).

I wish I could get out to fish as often as you do....

I agree with dwayne not to overcomplicate things, I caught 3 gills, 2 11" and one 12" yesterday on a full sized rapala skitterpop. Although mine weren't on light tackle, lol. Those are some pretty bluegill, ours are looking the same right now as those two in the middle with the orange near the throat. So the ratso works for open water too? ;D I'm gonna have to try it thanks for the info slipbob and nice fish!

Troutfishingbear, "I caught 3 gills, 2 11" and one 12" yesterday"

Doest that mean the average bluegill has been lowered from 13 inches down to 11.33 inches?

Alot of unnecessary arguing... ::)  Maybe Slipbobs water conditions are clearer, maybe that results in spooky gills. Id think a nice 10 ft light rod would do the trick perfectly for them. Not every man wants to be seen casting with a 10 dollar snoopy rod equipped with a zebco spincaster. But whatever works.... ::)

I'm sure Slipbob was making the whole gill fishing thing alot harder than it needs to be. ::)
I have the same d**n problem with my fish now, flyrod or long crappie rod is the only way to get them when its sunny and the water's clear.

He's not making this up.

The bluegill can be easily spooked at times.  In cleared water if they so much as see a shadow from a distance of 20 or so feet they will flee.  There have been other times I have been wading in the water within feet of the bull males and had them aggressively hit one fish after another.  I prefer using my 4.5 foot microlite rod, I simply tightline using a black knat fly pattern tipped with a spike, no bobber no splitshot.

Chronicle update.  It's been a whole week but I finally got some time to go fishing last night and the walleyes are definitely starting to turn on.  We're right at that critical presummer peak when the bite's hot.  I hooked 7 nice eyes in about 2 hours last night and landed my limit of 5. The fish were just slamming the lures last night and they are fighting much harder now as we are in the favored temperature range for eyes.  It's funny what a difference the temps make in regards to how hard the fish fight.  These walleyes were taking drag and making runs.  8)  I also hooked a smaller yellow perch pretty bad with a treble so I kept him and also kept a big ole white perch for "cat food".
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv89%2Fslipbob%2FSummer05%2F4e82afbf.jpg&hash=a6cad40eb72066e72a1ae3b52575ccd3)[/img]
Stay tuned for more updates as we roll through June.  I'll probably get out later in the week.

You don't like those white perch?  I haven't tried em yet, but one of my buddys says their good.  But then again he loves largemouth bass.  lol  Although, if i had a freezer full of eyes i wouldn't bother either.  Is 'toga the "walleye pond" you and red refer too?   ???

those are some nice eyes slipbob. just like d-man said. if you have a nice hole why not fish it as much as you can. sooner or later they are going to shut off. it isn't like you are fishing the hole pond out.

You don't like those white perch?  I haven't tried em yet, but one of my buddys says their good.  But then again he loves largemouth bass.  lol  Although, if i had a freezer full of eyes i wouldn't bother either.  Is 'toga the "walleye pond" you and red refer too?   ???

No white perch for me.  Some guys like em, but I don't care for em.  Much darker and stronger tasting flesh compared to walleye.  Yellow perch have darker flesh too but a sweeter flavor than the whites.  As far as where I fish,  it's just down the road from your house at Lake &*(%%%$.  Love that place.  ;D

You don't say!!   Now i know you grew up in oswego>

5 times in a row? For you? Not a problem!!   ;D Those eyes look great in that cooler, but I'm surprised there isn't a frosty brew or three in there.

That walleye closest to the bottom of the cooler has no coloring on it. That is different. They all taste the same in the pan  ;D 5 for 5 no problem SB. GO get em ;D 8)

I am beginning to think we all should chip in to purchase one of those GPS tracking devices that you stick onto the underbody of a car magnetically.  We can go to the Insurance Agency and slap that bad boy onto Slipbobs car and we will then find out where this walleye "pond" is located.

Nice fish slip.
Just wondering, do you guys have possession limits there? I notice you said you were 4 for 4 and your limit is 5 or whatever.
Here our principle limit is 5 and we can only have 5 at any one time in our freezer or anything like that. We can't catch and keep 5 one night, then go out the next night and catch and keep 5 more unless we ate the 5 we caught the previous night. Confused yet? Just wondering if you guys have those kind of limits. (btw it doesn't have to be the same number, panfish limit is 20 but we can have 50 in possession)

Post by: devil-man on Jun 21, 2005, 07:20 PM
Well, I'm not SB, but it's five in posession on the water.
You can have three freezers full of them at home.
(I think he does!)  ;)
The panfish limit here is fifty per species. Same rules apply.

nobody follows it here either. Call your DOW or dec or whatever it is there and they can check someones house for the game without a warrant! Our CDOW won't check for fishing violations but for hunting violations they will. Yours might care more about fishing, its hard to say for sure.

My freezer's stacked with pannies and trout, we can have as many as we wish here. Our limits are on the water, you can have a bunch at home if you wish.

Nice eyes, Slipbob.  Do you tip those Chubby's or fish 'em 'naked'?  A small minnow head or whole fathead would be nice on the front hook, but would it affect the action?

Nice chubbies.

I'll wait till the wind dies down.

I like to bring three rods (pre-rigged) myself because tying different lures on in the dark sucks and I'm not as young as I used to be.

I will probably just take all my Rapala's and Nilsies right out of my boxes because they don't catch a fraction of the walleyes that chubby's do.  Chubbies have a completely different action and that's why I believe they are so deadly.

That is a very bold statement, SB.
