Title: PERCH, SENECA, KEUKA
Post by: percher on Jan 23, 2010, 04:42 AM
Fished out of Severne yesterday, picked up 10 and our second boat ended up with around 25.  Had 3 real nice ones, small plastics, a few on meal worms on a drop shot. Ours came north of the launch  in about 21 ft of  water. Beautiful day, quite a few boats there and everyone was getting them

I know Seneca doesn't freeze over. But what about the ramps and launches how do you get your boat in and out? Are they not covered in ice and snow.

Wellsley,
No problem at the launch, I know guys who have been fishing since October. Severne has a nice launch with ribbed cement ramps. You just have to pick your days and dress for it. Some guys hve those small propane heaters that work well.

Severne is a good spot for trolling for lakers. I've been there in the summer. My hats off to anyone that fishes Seneca in the winter there can be some tough conditions. I hope the state keeps the road down to the launch clear. I think I'd try to put in at Lodi. I've caught some nice perch off the point at Lodi(in the summer) Good Luck with the perching.

fish seneca last sat, it was way to cold till around 11:oo. Could not keep the rods from iceing up and no wd40 in the boat.
Started to pic away at them on the east side around sampson area. At the end of the day 32 nice fish.

Hey Trucken,
When our  guides did ice up we just dip them in the lake. Does the wd keep the eyes from freezing up?
Sounds like you did well. We fished last Friday and the temps were the same. A friend went over yesterday and he and his partner got limits. I pullled the boat in the garage today so maybe next week I can get it wet.

Hey percher

WD does the trick we use it at the niagara river if its in the teens or low 20,s .
One thing different though my perch rigs have much smaller eyes and the fire line seemed to be a little stickey.
Our line was breaking at our blood knot way to much in the morning. I prob wont be there for a few weeks due to onedia being so good.
Good luck

My perch partner and I fished out of Severne today and picked up around 30 keepers and several smalls that we released back. 4 other boats were out and some trout trollers. All came in 20 FOW.
Weather was a little cold but hardly any wind until late in the afternoon when the north winds came in.

Start at Roy's Marina about 2 miles south on Rt 14 of Geneva.  Not the best launch, but pay the $6.00 and talk to the owners Larry & Roz.  They are super nice people and will give you some good and current information.  They also have a decent amount of the right tackle to get you started.  There is good fishing for perch right in their bay - Glass Factory - and it's as good a place as any to start.

Go with light line 4-6lb test, but not necessarily a light action rod.  These fish are caught as deep as 100' sometimes and most often between 20-50'.  Heavy weights are used to get down fast and an ultalight rod just doesn't give you the sensitivity you need with heavier weight.  I use medium & sometimes medium light action rods.

If you are lucky and get a calm day, cruise around along the drop or in the deepest water you can see bottom in.  You will eventually see what your after.    Probably won't catch too many of them, but it will get you fired up.   These are uncommonly spooky fish, so give others plenty of room, whether you are just scouting or looking to pull up and anchor.

This is a tough lake to fish!!!!  Don't get discouraged, but you need to put your time in.

My suggestion would be find someone who has already fished it a few times or your going to get VERY frustrated, the perch can be very hard to target and even harder to catch with any consistency. Don't get me wrong maybe your really good and you'll have no problem but, I've been after them for more than 10 years and still have some BAD days on Seneca Lake.

Good Luck,
Steve

Anyone been out on Seneca. I have the boat ready. My wife just had our first child 6 days ago. I hope to get away for a few hours now and then . just wondering if anybody is doing any good. I am not looking for your spot just would like to know if they are hitting. I am not going to get to make many trips over there. It would be nice to know if anyone is catching them before I drive the 2 hrs. Thanks for you're help.

The "locals" hope your not talking about Roy's. There ALWAYS killing them thats a selling point for bait. Keep at it you'll find them sooner or later and be rewarded with a few pigs

They're always killing them the day before.  That's a Seneca Lake given.  But to be fair to Larry & Roz (the owner's of Roy's) I don't believe he just gives good reports for the sake of selling bait.  He has told me plenty of times nothing much was going on and likewise he has put me in the general area of fish lots of times too.  It's a big lake, to say they're getting them in front of the Pink Cottage can be accurate but still leaves a lot of water to explore.

I will also add this, there are a handful of locals that go out of Roy's that almost always are on fish and they could very well be the ones that "killed them".   To anyone starting to fish on Seneca for perch I have to repeat myself.  Don't get discouraged.  You will probably have more bad days than good.  I fished 8 hours with my very skilled partner Saturday and we got 1 perch and one smallie (I know, I Know I can hear all the jokes already).  That's the nature of Seneca.

friends fished out of sampson today nothing going on fished them hard but they have been catching fish seneca is a tough lake to fish and the locals are hush hush  on where there picking them up lot of searching  and more arguements out there if you dont use ur ethics very serious fisherman on our lake sometimes a little more than i like but to each there own so if u see boats dont storm in or u will hear it the perch are spooky and can blow the day if u bang the anchor or anything ill see you all out there good luck

Fished Seneca today.  Tough day, found some fish but nothing schooled up.  Caught 12 perch (2 of us) and just couldn't seem to get it going.  Also got 5 nice smallies, so between what we caught and what we missed enough activity to keep it interestiing.  Beats falling through the ice.  Caught them all on plastics - swirl tail minnows and slider grubs of various colors.  Fish were shallower than I usually get them this time, 15-20 fow.  A lot of debris and crap in the water.  Water temp 39 degrees.

Kingfisher,

We also use swirltail minnows and sliders, both work great. If you ever need any pumpkinseed swirltails drop me a line, I had a few thousand made up and have been supplying guys with them. Thursday is looking good so far for Seneca and I might try and get on the water again. We useally fish out of Severne and have done well so far there this year.

Thanks, but I'm not so sure 12 constitutes a great job.  It's a start and enough to make me want to go back for more, but nothing to write home about yet.  I got them on Seneca,  I don't want to come across as a jerk, but I won't divulge specific locations.  I caught them in 15-20 fow.  A few we caught fairly close to the boat and parallel to the drop with the depthfinder reading 17' so I'm guessing they were all around that depth.  No bladders were popping out of their mouths so they weren't too deep.

I make my own rods, but I use a lot of Cabela's blanks.  This was a 6'6" Fish Eagle II heavy action blank.  I mentioned before I use heavier than normal action rods so they don't go mushy with big weights (up to 1oz, sometimes more).  Helps to maintain sensitivity with a lot of weight and wind.  I also think a lot of manufacturers call their rods a little heavier than what I actually feel is a heavy action.

Went again today by myself and only caught 3 in the same area.  Nice fish though, of the 15 we caught in 2 days not one was under 12" and one was just shy of 14"  If I can figure out how to post pics, I will start posting some.  Fish I cleaned today had snails in them.  Yesterday I noticed some spit up zebra mussels.  No wonder I can't catch them.

Thanks for the offer, I'm pretty well stocked myself.  I bought a bunch of both lures in bulk, way cheaper than buying them at the tackle store.  I've been thinking of trying Severne, but all the east wind lately has kept me away.

When you guys are fishing plastics and doing well, are you riggin them with a standard jig head and fishing it right on the bottom or are you running some sort of drop shot rig?

Seems the Plastics frequently out fish bait on Seneca, so I was thinking of trying the same on Cayuga where bait is usually the preferred offering.

Thanks

I like a 1/16th to 1/8th jig head (preferably a stand up or chub jig style but ball heads are fine) and the plastic colors need to be different shades of greens and/or browns.   Something that immitates an oak leaf grub.
Brewers crappie Sliders in Avacado glitter have been hot for years and still are.   Maki Plastic "Stonies" in green or brown are killers on Seneca as well !   One of my all time favorites is a small 1 1/2 tapered grub body in motor oil glitter on a 1/16 oz jig head or rigged on # 6 or 8 hooks on a dropper with a pencil sinker on the bottom.
One word of advice for catchijng Seneca Lake perch.    DON'T JIG.......DRAG....SLOWLY ON THE BOTTOM !!

Drop shot. Usually 2 lures about 16" apart anywhere from 12"-24" above the sinker.  I usually put the slider on a 1/32 oz jig head and attach them to the main line with a short dropper loop like you use ice fishing.

Don't know if it really makes a difference, but when you get into fish, I find it is a lot easier & faster to get the hook out.  When it's cold I can use forceps and pinch the head with out taking my gloves off.  Also saves chewing up the plastic.

I hear ya on the drive with Oneida having the quality perch that it does !    I'm in the same boat.    I love Oneida !   Best inland multi specie fishery in North America !

Only reason I go to Seneca these days is for the challenge and/or to take others out who've never fished it or who've struggled in their attemps to catch the big perch there.   The draw of catching a 2 lb perch in 70 ft of water still gets my attention  ;D ;D

Gammafish you are exactly right
with the colors and technique , motor oil and slow, also find weeds, drag through very slowly, when you feel the weeds pause for a couple seconds I like to use just 1/8 ounce jig with a big fathead

It's on the east shore about 1/2 mile north of Watkins Glen.  There is a big American Flag along with some other grafitti painted on the shale cliffs.  There is boat launch right there in Watkins Glen,  I used it years ago, but don't remember exactly how to get to it.

70ft that's crazy.

After today I'm about ready to pull my boat home.  At some point I have to smarten up and get practical...I'm 5 minutes from the boat launch on Oneida yet I continue to drive an hour and 1/2 each way to get my butt kicked.

Caught 1 perch today (almost one - when I swung her in the boat my line broke)

Yep, live right off Lakeshore but I love those Seneca Perch!  I get just enough great days to keep me addicted.  Besides bass, it's probaly my favorite type of fishing.  I put Seneca (actually all the Finger Lakes perch) in its own category of fishing.

I don't know about the crappie.  I've never caught one there.  My friend told me years ago he got into some really big crappie while looking for perch in Dresden.  I don't why it wouldn't, being connected to the Seneca River, but then again you never hear anything about walleyes in the lake either.

Hit up Keuka today.  Caught a few dozen perch with maybe a dozen of them between 8 and 10 inches.  None bigger.  Most perch caught were 7 inchers and looked to be chubby little females.  Didn't keep any.  Went out of Penn Yan.  That current is ripping in the outlet.

Four of us fished Canandaigua lake yesterday, with only one perch caught between all of us. ??? Water was so clear that you could see bottom at 40' - Unbelievable. Marked no schools of perch anywhere.

Fished Seneca by Sampson from 8:00am - 11:30 am.  Caught 7 perch.  All on plastics between 10-17FOW.  Very few boats and didn't see anybody really getting many.  The few boats that were out there were moving alot.  Beautiful day...wish I had more time.

This was Friday 4/2
