Water Wolf's 2009 open water adventures.
« on: May 11, 2009, 07:23 PM »
Hi all,

I started my new open water season on Sat. May 9th.
I though I would try some evening fishing.

Spot 1 yeilded no fish, so, after an hour I moved to spot 2.
I met a family coming in from fishing who said they hadn't even have a single bite all afternoon.
Not good news. :P

I too had poor luck, except for this little guy.

This would be my only catch of the day, lol.
Next time I hope they are alot bigger. ::)

These two grebes decided to check and see if I had the right bait.

A final shot as the sun set.

I think it's fair to say we've all had days like that  8)

Either way, it sure beats a day of work!

Thanks ScubaBrian24,
A poor day of fishing definitely beats a good day at work.
When I go fishing I go for the experience, fish are aways a bonus for me.

I was able to make it out for the second time this season on Sat. It's been a month since I have been out so was chomping at the bit.

The weather was cloudy and cool with a bit of wind so I found a nice sheltered and quiet little spot at the mouth of a river feeding into a reservoir.

The water was quite shallow with weed growing a foot below the surface. They were nice and green so I thought there should be a few the warmer oxygen rich water.

Twelve min into the fishing and I get 2 taps and a solid strike.
The fish comes leaping out of the water and puts on a good show.
I land it and this is the results.

This little nipper. ::) :)

I fish for the rest of the afternoon but that was the action for the day, oh well, better than a skunk.

On a side note, I also find a pickerel rig still in it package just in the water along the shoreline. 8)

According to some folks I have chatted with, the fish still seem do be in a negative feeding mood and have been that way for quite a while.
Why we are not sure, but, there are probably several factors involved.

I hope they start to respond in a positive manner soon. :-\

The fishing has been up and down in my neck of the woods as well.  It will get better, it always does!  Thanx for the report

Thanks fishinfiend.
Yeah I have heard everywhere, that the fishing has been up and down in most of the lakes in my area. :-\

I have heard the fishing starts to get better once the poplar fluff starts to fly, and last week the poplar fluff was indeed flying, so on June 11th my uncle and I set off for some evening shore fishing.

On the way to the lake a fox family crossed the road ahead of us.
Two of the four pups remained on the other side of the road from the family.

They were popping in and out of the culvert, like that whack- a- mole game.

It was a nice evening at the lake with a bit of a breeze and not bad temps.

The fishing started off a bit slow with the bites coming only an hour and a half before dark.
In that time we had a couple of nibbles and 2 that got off right at the shore.

In the end I caught the big fish of the evening.

A  2.9 lb walleye.

This was the end results.

a walleye and pike for the both of us, not a bad way to end the evening a good meal to come. :)

On June 13th I went to Theodore Reservoir.
I only had an hour to fish but it was not bad while I was there.
I gave it a try at the Regional park and in the hour I had 3 pike follow me right to the shoreline, 1 bite off, and this guy.

A 2.5lb pike.

While I was at Theodore Reservoir I heard that the shore anglers were doing better than anglers in boats.
Lake of the Prairies has been unusually slow for most folks, and that Good Spirit Lake has been hot in shallow water.

Hi guys,
Here are my two most recent fishing adventures. ;D
The first adventure was on June 22nd at Theodore Reservoir.

My fishing partners and I made it out for 2 hours in the afternoon.

There was a nice breeze blowing in off the water just to keep things cool.

The water on the other hand was algae filled {kind of like a green felt rug} and was odorous.

It was a half an hour before I had the first tap. I cast back to the same spot and bang I felt a hit followed by a hard but brief fight, I though I may have a perch, not so, more like a perch sized walleye.

This one was just at the 1lb mark, so it went back.

A while later I had another tap and a strike before the lure got back to shore.
A pike was now landed and added to the stringer and another pike was landed 10 min before we left.  :)

I was the only one out of my group to find fish that afternoon.

As the afternoon wore on more and more anglers showed for the evening bite.

All the fish that they caught and kept were walleye the same size or smaller than the one I had.

While fishing I noticed that most of the other anglers use either a large round bobber or a fixed float and frozen minnow combo.

My 2nd trip was yesterday June 27th.

Last night I was passing by Fishing Lake and thought I would stop for some night fishing.
I fished for hour and a half.

I was again fishing off shore, but in that time I had a 2 nibbles and landed 2 walleye. They were not very big at a half pound and pound each, but they made up for it in fight.
They both went back to fight another day.
Walleye 1.

Walleye 2.

While out fishing I was treated to a fireworks show on 2 different areas of the lake.
On the way home I stopped to watch a field of fireflies, both put on a good show. :)

On both trips I had the best luck on Len Thompson spoons in the mid size range. ;)

LOL, no, those little walleye went back, I just kept the pike.

I did a bit more fishing on July 6th.

My fishing partners and I made our way up to McBride Lake.
We arrived around mid afternoon and fished until dark.

It was a nice day with a slight breeze and warm temps.

It was the first time I have fished this lake so I didn't know what to expect but I was optimistic that it should be good. :)

The view from my buddies boat was great, the tall spruce trees were like silent sentinels looking down on us.

Wildlife abounds in this area.
We saw many species of bird life and a few deer.

These little bufflehead ducks had to be the cutest guys we encountered.

Over the course of the afternoon we encountered 5 separate families, one of which had 15 in the group. :o

We found if you watched where the diving birds were you would find the fish.

This loon was a good guide.

The ravens were hanging around the fish filleting shack, looking for some leftovers.

The water lilies were just starting to bloom.

They should be in full bloom in a week.

The fishing was great.
We landed a total of 14 pike and 1 crayfish. 8)
Eight were kept. All the pike were very similar in size, between 1.5 and 3 lbs.

Overall this was a very enjoyable trip, with good company, fishing, scenery and wildlife.
I hope to try this area again someday. :)

Hi all,
It's been a while since I have been fishing, but on Monday Aug. 10th.
I hit the shores for some short evening fishing.

On the way to the lake I passed some wild boar, both large and small.

Along with their guardians, the lamas.

This lama was a bit agitated so I didn't want to get too close for fear of being spit on.
In the past I have seen a lama spit it's entire stomach contents on a small child who was pestering it at a fair.
It's funny to witness but gross to experience.

The temps at Fishing Lake were good that evening, and the lake was like glass.
The water had some algae bloom reducing visibility a bit.

The fish were quite aggressive and very close to shore.
They were busting small fish right at the surface and for a few fish all I had to do was just throw to the swirls and bang, fish on.

This was the end results.

During the evening I had a fish bite me off, half an hour later I land this pike.

It was the exact same fish that I had lost earlier and was able to recovered my lure from it. 8)

All the fish were caught on brightly colored spoons.

One pike and one walleye stayed as lunch, all the rest went back. ;)

Not to bad for an hour and a half of fishing.

It seems that both the shore angler and the anglers from the boat were sharing equal success that evening.
I hope this trend continues. :)

Hi all,

After seeing my success the last time I went fishing my uncle decided to join me on my next fishing adventure, so on Aug. 21st we were bound for the shores of Fishing Lake.

It was a nice afternoon at the lake.
The temps were good and there was a fair South wind, creating a walleye chop.
The algal bloom was alot less than before.

We fished from 3:30pm - 7:40pm.

On his very first cast my uncle lands a fish, a good start. :)

It was a real good day for fishing, we had action every few minuets with a slight lull around 4:00pm.

In the end we land 18 fish, 10 walleye & 8 pike. ;D

We kept a couple fish, but the majority went back to fight another day.

The pike were between 1.5 and 3.5 lbs with the largest at 4.1lbs{I caught this one}.
My uncle caught the largest walleye at 2.5 lbs and the majority were between 1 and 2 lbs.

I also had a bit of action when a young sea gull tried to eat the slip float I was using.
We had a brief tug of war before it left in a huff.

The float and worms didn't produce a single fish, but a faster retrieved sassy shad style lure did, as well and the good old Len Thompson spoons.

Hi all,

I went out again last night {Aug.29th} to do some evening fishing at Fishing Lake.

The water this time was very algae filled {I could only see a few inches into it} and was odorous.

There was only a slight breeze and the temps were warm.

There were a few folks out fishing and most reported 1 or 2 fish. They said the
action has really slowed down this last week, with a few skunking even from the anglers in the boats, not good news. :-\

I went from 6:30pm - 8:00pm and in that time I had one bite off {darn pike}, one fish throw the hook right at shore and 2 in the net.

Here are the 2 that made it onto land. :)

The pike was the big fish of the night at 3lbs and the walleye at 1.2lbs.
The pike stayed and the walleye went back.

A shot of the lake at sunset and after dark.

Hi all,

On Sept.5 I decided to try a new area for shore fishing, my destination was Echo Lake.

It was a nice day with sunny skies and more waves caused by jet skies and speed boats than wind.

My first spot was in front of the fish hatchery, I fished for an hour and a half without so much as a nibble for my efforts. :-\

Spot 2 was the E river mouth and area.

A shot of the lake from the E.

There were a few anglers leaving as I got there and they said they had no luck at all.

The river had a fair current with alot of sediment and large clumps of algae and weedgrowth floating by.

The only other angler fishing in that area was this guy, a swan grebe.

He was very tame and came within feet of me to see what I was doing. 8)

I tried for pike and walleye for a bit without any luck and then decided to try for whatever was around with a small weight and earthworm.
This was the ticket and I was into fish with the first cast.
Yellow Perch were the residents of that area and I had fun picking a peck of perch. :)
They were all around the same size as these 2 fish.

I fished in that area until the mosquitoes got real bad.

All the perch went back to fight another day, and grow.

Hi all,

It's been a while since my last post, waterfowl hunting has taken up a good part of my spare time so on Oct. 18th my uncle and I decided to do afternoon / evening shore fishing.

It was a dark and windy day, with a bit of rain mixed in for good measure.

We set up and on my 2nd cast I get a hook up and land a pike.
Ten minuetes after that I get another hook up and fight the pike right to shore only to have it bite through the line and take off back to the depths. :P
It looks like a good start to the afternoon.

Not long after I thought that, the rains move in again and last all afternoon and into the evening.
My uncle and I fish through it anyway without so much as a nibble for our efforts. ::)

Half an hour befor we leave, the rain stops and the sky clears just enough for a sunset to show through. I cast my lure to the sunny area of the lake and get another hit and another pike is landed. This would be the last active fish for the day, oh well, at least we avoided being skunked. :)

The days action.
