low water levels forced me down the chain yesterday to mission. couldnt launch at pasqua or echo. slow day dozen keeper perch, 8 lb pike no walleye. the weather was crappy and with the low water levels the fish seemed to be in deeper water than usual.
-
Has anyone fished off the shore on mission yet this year? How far down has the water really gone? I've heated it's crazy low.
-
I was also wondering if anyone has been shore fishing at the hatchery on Echo, and if so, how did you do?
Is the Qu'Appelle River low as well, or is it still high and flowing strong?
WW
-
Depends what part of the river you mean Rory, it‘s a long one. I just checked the watershed authority website and the graph for Echo at the hatchery shows the level 4 metres below the median as of a few days ago. That‘s pretty low.
-
I was thinking the part of the Qu'Appelle River that flows through the Calling Lakes and the Fort.
I wonder why they don't just close the dam at the end of Katepwa? :-\
That should raise all the lakes to the W a bit, I would think.
How are you doing buzzbomb?
Have you been carping or regular fishing yet?
WW
-
The graph for Katepwa shows. (As of about 5 days ago), level well below the high water mark but still just above the median. If the dam‘s still open there should be some water in the river. Where‘s Big Burk?, he should know. I‘m still on the surgery waitlist for re-fixing my leg but I‘ve had 2 half days shakedown but no bites. The hard to get to swims are out for a while but at least I can get to some places that were drowned last year. The wind is supposed to go down this afternoon so I may give it a shot.
Modified post: No fishing this afternoon due to inclement weather, (beer clouds), cheers! :D
-
I'm here but its been a brutal start to the fishing season, was in an accident and shattered my knee cap april 15 so haven't been very mobile and been working on boat as much as I can. I haven't made it out yet even shore fishing. Will get a water level report today or tomorrow and will be on the lake this weekend if plans change and I don't end up going to the north end of LML. Once the boats ready to go I have the next few months of recovery so hopefully the fishing is as good as it was last year.
-
Planning to head out to Lebret to fish off the shore tomorrow, I hope the herrings good!
-
on the saskatchewan watershed website there is a warning that was issued last friday http://www.swa.ca/WhatsNew/Advisories.asp?id=154
im wondering how high the water has come since this was posted. it says they were to be fully opening the craven control structure to allow water to flow through the system. any body been out to see the water levels recently? any info would be helpfull!
-
Last time I looked at the dam a week ago the water was still about 2‘ low but was moving fairly fast heading east; it didn‘t come up as much as the river at Big Valley and Valeport. That dam and the Valeport flood control gate have been wide open all winter, (there was an advisory last fall), so I don‘t understand the warning. I‘m going to have another look at the graph.
Okay, the water‘s risen way over the normal high water mark downstream from the dam and all that valley bottom is still saturated from the past 2 years of flooding so that advisory is primarily for the landowners who‘ll have a long shallow lake on their hayfields and pastures again. It could well mean no fishing at the weir by the old #6 highway as well, but since the main flow is heading for the fishing lakes and they‘re dry it isn‘t all bad. We‘re forecast to have a hot dry summer and I‘ll be happy to see the water come up a little now so it can last a while.
-
On Sunday I went from Craven to # 6 and the water‘s definately coming up E of the dam. The first bridge W of # 6 is washed out as is the next one W (from last year) and the river looks on average 2‘ below the bank though there are already large parts of bottom land covered. You have to be seeing the fishing lakes come up soon.
-
Echo is still low but has been slowly coming up. Haven't made it to pasqua yet
-
Well me and my one buddy made it out to the lake this morning and after a night of wind and rain we were blessed with a nice calm hour at sunrise then the wind and rain came back. Didn't get much fishing done due to first time taking friends boat out and ran into some carb problems on the ol 70hp johnson and were only able to go about 1/4 throttle back from pasqua to the launch at the fort. If you don't have rollers on your trailer you will have to back up a fair ways at that launch its still low but slowly rising. The river channel connecting pasqua and echo I'd only recommend travelling if you have power tilt on your motor unless you know exactly where to drive. Am heading back out once the weather lightens up this week as the rough water took a beating on my broken knee. Any body else been out lately?
-
Hit pasqua up tonight and bite was slow then it started to rain for a while and the walleyes started hitting good. Rain and wind went away and so did the fish. Last hour spent on lake didn't catch anything. 7-9pm was our most productive time today. Possibly going out again tomorrow and will be out saturday too. Anybody else been out lately?
-
Today was a good day but lost count of how many pike and walleye we caught after two hours of steady action. Nothing of any size but the amount of small fish caught made up for the biggest fish of the day being a 3lb walleye. Gonna head out to a few spots I haven't fished this year yet in the next day or two.
-
I'll bite and start posting instead of lurking since your putting fourth such a valiant effort to generate discussion Big Burk :P I often icefish the quapelle chains and love it. I've hit up Pasqua a couple times this year just fishing from a buddies dock (Dads a little slow getting the boat "ready" as per usual). But me and the girlfriend made it out to Pasqua last Wednesday and had good success; caught 12 Walleye, nothing massive but some good eaters, 4 Jack, and a nice 13" perch. We hope to make it out again tomorrow/today, I'm currently working in Manitoba on a rig (recent geologist grad) so gotta take advantage of any days off I get and hit up the lake.
Kind of off topic but where my rig is located is just walking distance from the Assiniboine River, anyone ever fished the river/how does the angling license work? If I'm on the Manitoba side (just barely), because its a shared waterway do I need a Manitoba fishing license or is my Sask License valid.
-
I know when fishing lake of the prairies if you want to fish the sask side you need a sask license and when you go to the manitoba side you need a manitoban license. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I am almost positive that this applies to all other waterways that border a different province
-
On page 8 of the 2012 Sask Fishing Guide it states that either Sask. or Manitoba fishing licences are valid for Lake of the Prairies. You do not require both licences.
-
I've fished lake of the prairies with only a Sask license and was told that was just fine but had to use barbless hooks. I'm just unsure about the Assiniboine but to be safe might as way call. Side note made it out today to Pasqua.
Very windy day got into 10 Jacks and 9 walleye, one beauty 28" walleye which an online calculator said was 8lbs yet my girlfriends cheap spring scale said 4lbs. Felt heavier then 4lbs so was surprised by her scales reading but the online calc. Said 8lbs which is double the scale weight. Obviously girth plays a role on weight but in your opinion what's a 28" walleye typically weigh? I don't trust that garbage 5 dollar scale but don't want to be pulling peoples legs saying it was a legit 8lb haha are these online calculators typically accurate or a good representation?
-
There‘s always a little give or take with measurement charts, but I think a 4 pound walleye is usually about 22“.
-
Hi Roughrider44,
I would say you were accurate in your assessment of your walleye's weight, nice fish. :)
I have never found those spring scales to be too accurate, they are usually quite stiff. :P
WW
-
length x length x length, divide by 2700 for walleye and 3500 for pike. 28"x 28 x 28 / 2700= 8.13 lbs.
ive used this calculation for years its scary how close it comes to a digital scale. if the fish looks normal and healthy this formula is pretty acurate.
p.s. throw out your spring scale lol they are garbage!
-
roughrider44 that is a nice walleye, any pics?
-
Yup snapped a few pics gotta monkey around on here and figure out how to upload. Thanks for the replys, I was pretty shocked when I finally got it in and it was a big walleye, thought for sure it was a jack. Was a good day overall, took out my girlfriends sister and her nephew for their first time fishing so they wanted pictures with the fish and enjoyed themselves
-
Got lazy and decided to put them on Photobucket hopefully it worked. I did end up keeping the fish, I normally like to throw back walleye bigger than 5lbs but I had it hooked fairly deep, promised the little nephew a fish fry, and the excitement of the new fisherman/woman wanted pictures so the fish got handled fairly rough (as you can see by the grass on it) so figured it would be s waste should the fish not make it. Little guy is the nephew, his mom is the brunette, my girlfriend the blonde and I'm the goofy looking one.

Went out today on the river in my small boat and hammered the walleye. Heading out again in morning
-
On page 8 of the 2012 Sask Fishing Guide it states that either Sask. or Manitoba fishing licences are valid for Lake of the Prairies. You do not require both licences.
You need a manitoba licence to fish downstream of the dam though.
-
Went out last night from 6 till midnight and was a slower night but still managed to find rhe walleye.
-
Had a great day on the lake today, hammered the pike and walleye, biggest walleyes were 5lbs &6lbs.
-
Sounds like a good day, I'm hoping we're done drilling this well early this morning and may get out and see how the fish are on Pasqua. Likely no boat again so will have to try the buddies dock/river. How deep were the fish when you were getting into them Big Burk?
-
Was catching the walleye jigging and trolling in 12-32ft of water. Pasqua has been good this year but have had to cover a lot of water to find them, normal hotspots haven't been producing as good as past years but it should pick up in next few weeks.
-
Well my options are limited fishing from shore but have had decent luck so far hopefully it all works out.
-
Well went out this morning and to start the morning off, the battery for the boat had enough juice to fire the 65hp mercury once and then barely had enough juice to run fish finder. So instead of loading boat up and driving the ten min home I toughed it out by using just my 4.5hp kicker to move around. Didnt make it to my choice spots but hit some back up areas close to boat launch. Was catching walleye and pike pretty steady with the longest time between hits being 5 min. Might head back out tonight or tomorrow either on the lake or on the river.
-
Hey guys has anyone been to Round Lake in the Quappelle chain this year? I'm heading there for the weekend and am itching to hopefully get into some walters. Any advice or water conditions would be appreciated! Thanks.
-
Made it out today and fishing slowed down from last week but I can't say the fishing was bad. Went out after 4 and stayed out till almost 10 and managed to catch a couple dozen pike, a dozen walleye and a couple perch. Gonna head out again a few times later this week.
-
Hi Big Burk,
Great fishing you have been having, keep it up. :)
I was wondering how deep it the Qu'Appelle River on average?
By looking at it flowing through the Fort there it's hard to tell for sure. :-\
WW
-
On average with normal water levels it is between 4-8ft depending where you are on the river. I will only take small boats on there as I have seen a few props destroyed by people trying to push it with larger boats :P
-
I see, thanks for the info Big Burk. :)
WW
-
Had a good afternoon on the river, caught nothing but walleye.
-
Went out on the river yesterday morning and then again in the evening, walleyes were hitting good and got a couple nice 4-5lbers. Fishing was great right before the storm hit last night then the bushing in the prop decided to let go when we were making our way back to truck. Ended up soaking wet and pulling the boat up the side of a pretty steep sloap with a tow strap hooked to the truck during the storm. Was a good day but prop couldn't of let go at a different time
-
Good to hear that your still nailing them Big Burk.
Those are nice sized walleyes. :)
I am convinced "Murphy" was fisherman. ::)

Well was a beautiful day on the water, we didn't catch huge numbers but got quality fish. We got on the lake around 4pm and after taking my son for a little boat ride we started fishing and first fish of the day was a nice 5.5lb walleye and followed by 3 dink walleye and 4 walleye 2-4lb range. Then took my son back to cabin and took my youngest brother out with us. Almost as soon as we start fishing my girlfriend hooked into her pb walleye weighing in at just over 7lbs, we then caught 9 walleyes in the 1-4lb range and 3 perch. Forgot the net in the truck and because of this I lost the biggest pike I have ever seen come out of these lakes (would of been trophy on tobin!), I didn't get a good grip on him and with one last shake he slipped out of my hands and broke the line. I am hating myself for saying we shoudnt need the net today and should of went and got it after the two nice walleye. Pike would of been around or over the 30lb mark no lie, but didn't get it in boat so only me, my girlfriend and brother will ever truely believe the size of this hog. I am seriously debating on fishing the tourny in fort qu'appelle this year with size and numbers we have been catching it may be worth a shot.
My 5.5lb walleye

Nice looking fish there Big Burk! Keep it up man. I'm taking my girlfriend down to Fort Qu'Appelle after work today and was thinking of fishing the river between Echo and Pasqua, any updates on the bite there? What kind of bait and lures is everyone using in there? We will be fishing from shore and I would like to get into some walleye and perch hopefully!
Thanks everyone.
-
I've been busy with work but did get out again last week and fishing in the river was slow for us. Early season was very good and all I was using was a perch lead head with a light yellow/green sparkly twin tail tipped with a crawler. I let the current take some line and sloooow retrieved. The slow retrieve and letting out some line seemed key because the people to my right I hooked up with my same setup because they weren't getting much action, but they didn't follow my retrieve advice and so.still ended up skunked. I didn't wanna seem like a know it all because I'm far from it so just let them cast and retrieve as they pleased hoping they would catch on to what we were doing to get them.
After the river we tried the hatchery and had some good success with perch and small walleye, all we were doing was tossing pickeral rigs, brother also got a surprise 15 lb carp. But good luck hope you find some.
-
Got out to Echo on Thursday evening, started fishing aroud 6:30 and fished until about 9:30. Started out at the river on the East side of the highway, North side of the river. Lots of carp flipping their tales close to shore and jumping but I didn't even get a bite and neither did the 3 other guys fishing there. Headed over to the hatchery and fished there from about 7:45 to 9:30 and only managed one tiny pickerel that went back. I was using a white lead head with a yellow/green sparkly mister twister double tail with a crawler and dragging it along the bottom. Also tried a pickerel rig, small spoon, and wild eye small perch with no luck. Water was pretty green when it was calm...cleared up a bit when a boat would come by and make waves. I also noticed that the water level is way down since I was at the hatchery in June. Planning on trying Regina Beach today hopefully have better luck there! Thanks for your info Roughrider44 but no perch for me this time!
-
Any updates on the 4 lakes around Fort Qu'Appelle? Going to try Echo tomorrow and the river b/n Echo and Pasqua again. Heard that later in the evening towards sun down the walleye start biting in the river, anyone have any insight on that? I will report back when I get a chance...
Thanks
-
I was out yesterday and was fishing off a buddies dock on pasqua, all I managed there was 1 carp, 1 jack, 1 perch, 3 walleye. Towards the evening I went out to echo and fished where a bunch of ropes lead down to some rocks. The fishing picked up later and managed to get into more walleye however nothing of notable size. I haven't been back to the river for a while so have no Intel there.
-
Thanks for your reply! Is that place with the ropes on the south side of echo at that roadside turnout between hatchery and campgrounds?
-
Yup that's the place was tossing pickeral rigs with minnows and worms both seemed to work. The bite picked up around 7:30, like I said lots of small ones and the bite was fairly light. I had similar success at the hatchery with perch mixed in. I usually just choose the location with less people :P
-
Great news, hopefully we can pull some in today! I have fished the hatchery a couple times this year and only caught a few walleye, what were you catching the perch on there? I am new to these lakes this year but will be fishing them as much as i can in the coming years...so thanks for any of your valuable knowledge! Much appreciated guys.
-
I was getting perch on smaller minnows and worms on a smaller hooked perch rig or just on a normal pickeral rig with a worm. Lazy fishing just tossing the rigs out and waiting for the bites, giving the rig a little jig now and then.
-
Got rained out before we left for Echo last week, ended up in the bar instead  hopefully get out this week and try for some eaters! Thanks for all the info Roughrider44. Anyone get out over the weekend?
-
I was in the Fort Qu'Appelle area for an hour just before dark on Sunday {Aug.5th}. I shore fished in the river on the E side of Echo.
There were a few fish jumping in the river so I cast my bait to one of them and not a minuet later had a bite.
It turned out to be a small, but feisty, carp a few lbs in weight. :)
I was going to take a photo of it, but it jumped out of my hands and back into the river before I got the chance, lol. :w00t:
That was the only bite the time I was there.
It seemed that other anglers down from me did not have any action either.

Anybody have any reports from those who have been fishing by boat? Have not even wet a line since canada day weekend (new record for me...) Have been to busy with yard work and other things that have had to take priority... Planning on getting the boat back in the water this weekend but have been thinking of headin to marean lake if the fishing hasn't been great. Any input would be great
-
Hey Big Burk did you get your boat out lately? I am taking the gf fishing this weekend and I'm trying to decide where to go. Fishing from shore so my expectations are low but hopefully Echo is producing this weekend!
Thanks!
-
The girlfriend and I made it out to pasqua/echo today for some shore fishing. Didn't catch a single walleye or pike, the water had the nastiest green slime over the surface but it would get blown out and a second patch would later blow in. We did catch some fish but 7 were carp... Up until this year I rarely caught carp now everytime I go out I'm catching multiples. It's a good thing I got braided line cause those fish fight pretty good and a few have been pushing 20 pounds I'm sure. We also caught several perch but couldn't get the walleye to bite.
-
Hi guys,
Hows the shore fishing been at the Fort Qu'Appelle Lake or in the river this season?
Have any of you tried the around Round Lake or the river in that area?
If so, any catfish?
I hope I can try for cats once at least this season.
They look like they would be a neat one to catch. :)

Has anybody havin any luck on these lakes yet
-
I am heading out tomorrow not sure where to try, Haven't fished these lakes this early so not sure what the typical pattern of the walter are.
