Title: The Salt Is Alive
Post by: SHaRPS on Jun 02, 2021, 11:05 AM
I hope all is well with everyone and that you are all slaying something on the water.

1 fluke trip in the boat so far and worked hard for them. A handful of keepers with this 6lber and many shorts. Striped bass have been plentiful as well and I had one outing where every cast equaled a fish. Still need to make a seabass run and hoping to do so this weekend. Weather has been sub par with rain and High Winds, week after week after week. Lets hope for a better weekend stretch for the future.

Did much better than I did all weekend....

You had a whole weekend of Ditch Pickle weather.  Mother Nature sure screwed up a nice long weekend.  I'm praying my trip next week to cutty has more favorable conditions.

Wow, the fluke have eluded my line so far this year, but I'll probably be out there again this weekend.

Might be because they didn't allow inshore spring dragging this season or last.  Those daggers absolutely decimate the fluke population.

Lets bump this one back up again.

First and foremost, CONGRATS on the new additions to both of you, Jon and Matt!

The fluke are having close to a 0% chance of escaping my wrath. Each trip I have put a good one on the boat as well. It has been a grind and I have not had a spectacular day yet, but I know is coming and I actually like to grind it out like this. Makes it rewarding.

The salt is alive indeed. Nice doormats, congrats.   I'm envious. I only got out on the open ocean once of recent about a week and a half ago but we hit some big bass on top water.  Looking to get back out soon.

I did not want to hijack another thread so updating this one.

This is what a 6lb average of fluke looks like. Biggest being over 8 and smallest over 4. Those seabass were all good fish as well.

Tons of big scup and cunner and we easily boated over 150 seabass. Some school striped bass on the way in. Great day but a rough and wet ride back.

If it doesn't work out I am taking out a second mortgage and buying something obscene.  So tired of looking at boats....lots of people do not take care of their boats then want to sell you the headaches.

As for CC's not for me.  I couldn't think of a way to be more uncomfortable on a long steam, especially if you aren't behind the console...

I have been saying it for decades, it is the FL market that drives the industry- Short runs, warm water splashed in your face...
Title: Re: The Salt Is Alive
Post by: SalmonAndStriper Stalker on Aug 04, 2021, 07:36 PM
the way I fish I could never work with a cabin style boat. too much maneuvering to be able to cast if the fish don't pop up conveniently. I agree cc's are a wet ride but I personally don't mind. proper bibs and it's nothing. can't beat the fishability of a cc and I'm personally more than willing to sacrifice comfort for fishability.
Title: Re: The Salt Is Alive
Post by: lowaccord66 on Aug 04, 2021, 10:02 PM
This boat would be used more jigging lakers and maybe jigging tuna.  Casting is for suckers.  I can cast all day long at the canal...(it was empty Saturday night).

Re comfort and fishability...you'll learn when you get a bit older.  I tend to like to fish for days at a time.  As hard as I can and I'm not doing that in a crappy CC (I have my stratos if I want to feel the wind)...and this is coming from someone who fished in a century 2901 for a while.  Sick boat, for someone else.

Title: Re: The Salt Is Alive
Post by: stripernut on Aug 05, 2021, 12:27 AM
Guiding I have fished out of most types of boats, for me, I like Duel Consols, nothing high to get in the way of a fly, still, fish the front and yes Jigging tuna is fun but watching them hit my plug is more fun! I have no trouble fighting a fish around the whole boat and 2 nice seats and a windshield to block the spray... Early in the season we put the canvas up and can fish the snottiest days. We all know no one boat can do it all, every boat is a compromise...

Nice electronics package on that one. 4G radar is great.

Personally can't understand the center console mania either. I want a full windshield and a roof over my head if I'm on the ocean. But different strokes for different folks they say.

A "trick" that has worked for me and Bonita is to get ahead (best guess) of them, cast in a good direction, and just let your line sink (I most often use intermediate for them), even if it goes vertical, then when they pass by, even if they are not breaking I start a fast strip in and often hook up... I also have hooked stripers that I did not know were there... Saves on the arms blind casting, but it keeps you in the game.
Title: Re: The Salt Is Alive
Post by: SalmonAndStriper Stalker on Aug 09, 2021, 07:45 PM
I personally never blind cast. I'll only take a couple casts after they sound but hold my fire till they come up again. what separates a 2 fish day from a double digit day is what allan said which Is reading their direction and patterning their movements

Im a huge blind caster...Ive caught many albies and bonita guys never made a cast for.  Days where youd think there were none around...no surface activity, no cues to pattern any movement....just a big open ocean.

Maiden trip complete.  To keep it interesting I chose to throw eels at nignt.  I learned to run the boat fast...the radar is amazing!  Missed 2 bass.

Nice! Are you able to find a Terrova right now? Do you have a good spot to mount it or do you have to build a bracket? You gonna order a lithium battery from behind the Wendys? You might be able to pay Mac's guy in Dogecoin if that's more convenient.

I am on a waitlist for one.  Have a great spot to mount it and a good spot for batteries.  Will likely do 3 group 27 agms.  Had thought about 2 36v dakotas but god forbid a lithium battery gets punctured somehow...thats an unstoppable fire.

I was at the race last night and would have slaughtered if I could have spot locked right before the tide rips...instead I salughtered my passenger with sea sickness...

I did catch a fluke though...(not mike sized)

I was at the race last night and would have slaughtered if I could have spot locked right before the tide rips...instead I salughtered my passenger with sea sickness...

I did catch a fluke though...(not mike sized)

Relief Band motion sickness Electrode Stimulator
Best thing I have seen yet, only seen it fail once (this past weekend) and I think it is the unit, as it is over 10 years old... I have put it on guys that were hanging over the rail and stopped them mid puke!

Its fishy for 50's

(https://i.postimg.cc/47tnvYbn/20210815-203559.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/47tnvYbn)

Ran 90 miles round trip Sunday and broke my arms all night on big bass.  Landed one larger than this but pic didnt save.

Ran 90 miles again yesterday and crushed seabass all day.  Boat fishes really well, it didn't do this:

Apparently happened Sunday while I was right there.  I didnt notice and am unsure how it happened.  It wasnt rough.

Thanks guys!  Come down to old saybrook sometime after the storm.  Can take you out.  I like making the run to block and stay there for 10-12 hours.  Fish fluke and seabass during the day then switch to eels at dusk for bass.

I love that stuff, but not everyone puts it along the inside of the gunnel so you can lean your thighs against it in rough weather or a long fight with a big fish... Like toe rails, they just make a boat a real fishing machine!

Post by: stripernut on Aug 28, 2021, 06:05 AM
Best of luck! One "trick" I learned long ago that makes things "safer" when using wire leaders for sharks is to use a two-part leader. 1st part braided wire 4+ feet long then an oversize swivel, then the section of single-strand wire (coffee-colored) to the hook. The main reason to use this "rig" is that when the fish is boat side, grabbing a big oversized swivel with your gloved hand is much safer than wrapping wire around your hand (though I use the back of the hand trick if I need to)... The other tip is if you hook a jumping mako, lighten up on the drag and run the boat 50-100 yards away and then start the fight... Much better than having a new member of your crew jump in the boat and cause all kinds of trouble!
I am going to have to break down and get a 14wt fly rod, lots of fun when the blue sharks are thick... It is just so much money for sadly a limited amount of use...

Seabass, scup, a mack and 2 bonito made the ride back home. Fluke, searobbins, striped bass, bluefish and dogfish are sharing their story  ;D

Fly rod???

Guy I follow on the insta John McMurray who is a guide out of NY had a video of a client hooked up to one.  I don't know if they tease them into casting distance with spinning gear w no hooks or if they chum to get them close enough.  Thing got into the backing instantly.

So after my first experience I would tell you that they most likely did both of those to get them there. Or, maybe nothing at all. Additionally, I am not sure what weight fly rod they were using but I was using 15lb braid and 25lb mono leader and they fought like a 6lb bonito with the added 5 foot leaps into the air. The bulls we got, they fought way longer and more so like an 8lb albie. I can tell you this, I definitely felt like I could have some fun with them on a mickey mouse rod or Mh ice rod and say 6-8lb test line. The bulls would most likely spool me but the 8lb and less would be fun as......

TBH it looked like an 8wt or 10wt.  Hits the fly like 5 feet from the boat, instantly into backing, two jumps and spit the hook.

This was on spinning gear but they aren’t casting to dinks.

I too went on a tuna adventure last week. absolutely slaughtered them. the boat total was a little over 60 fish for 20 guys. well our group of 3 caught 1/3 of the boat total of fish with 20 tuna. absolutely amazing fishing.

Very nice.  Tried to make it out for tuna yesterday....the wind stopped me.  However, I did have another night of killing eels.

I bought that boat for champlain and ontario because I was getting blown off...if the trolling motor was available it would have been ripped out of the slip and I would have jigged lakers all season.

If you want it for your dad next season lemme know.  Definetly looking to go 32' or up next season.

I can say the same for fishing while standing next to 40 people trying to snag pogies.  ;) or driving to a fishing spot with drunk drivers or people on their cell phones. For me (and many on here know) its not just a passion for hunting but truly a way of life. With all of that said, I respect your opinion because we all have different experiences. Busting tuna, dropping a big buck (buck fever is a real thing) stepping on a grouse or woodcock, or my son setting the hook into a tog like he is in the bassmasters is all a high.

Oh, I love drawing down on a big buck and I won't stand next to a crowd to snag poggies and we all take our chances driving to hunting and fishing spots... If I had infinite time I would do both, but few of us do... I wish you the best of luck hunting, for the next week I have to "settle" on trout fishing in CO (poor me...) Sons "real" wedding, but I would still rather be on the salt, casting to busting fish.

I got really sea sick for first time a few years ago and while I have been in rough seas since and with dramamine not one chumming I still get uneasy feeling.
Also Jon,  while I trust your judgment I know you would go out and stuff I wouldn't so I was airing on the side of caution 😉

Oh Matt I have the text! Ribbing aside I get it. I also get butterflies, I get sick on charters occassionally becuase im not the captain.
The other day I was organizing gear in the cuddy in like solid 3's and my head was spinning.

My efforts Friday night into Saturday were for nothing.  Mike your back yard was packed with boats.  The ground fishing was excellent so I live lined for 0 cows (bluefish of course since I had snelled a 9/0 octopus.  Should have went to the ledge.  Was a bumpy ride home.

Nice togs, thinking about heading to CT after it opens.  My son and I  targeted the funny fish Saturday and it was good via the pink Hogy jig but halfway through we committed to the fly rod. We had some good chances including some swipes but failed to connect. Definitely more challenging with the long rod. They are so fast.

I snagged a bunch of fly rods at an estate sale last year.  Guy I gave a 12wt to landed a 40lb striper on one so they can handle good sized fish.  It'd most likely be a 10wt but if I have it I'll part with it for like $50.  PM me if you are interested and I'll see if I have one.

the amount of 15in fish is absurd. I did easily catch 40 keepers yesterday though. was throwing back the 16s 17s looking for 18-20s. I've noticed that since I have gotten the feel for the correct bites I'm swinging and hooking up more on sub keepers and keepers compared to rats.

Ya not sure, im never one to hound anyone for a boat ride. I appreciate the offer (s) none the less.
Sounds like you guys had a epic day. Ive yet to target Tog from a boat, im sure its blast being able to get at bigger fish
While i have found spots that produce from shore, i dont generally  get fish much over the minimum 16". Also limited by the tides/ and currents when i can get my bait on the rock piles..but when it lines up its pretty consistent until tide flips. Still trying to find spots. Tried a few times in RI last year and struggles to find them, while i find some they were tiny...

That's a dandy tog.  Just spent this past weekend in the salt on my annual trip with my boys and their buddies. We hit the false albacore pretty well in the morning with everybody cashing in on the atomic zingers and then spent the afternoons on the bottom catching some nice tog, black sea bass etc.,  and had a few fish fries. When the wind kicked up we found a bunch of school stripers feeding on peanut bunker in the estuaries.  A little bit of everything.  Fun trip, glad we missed the bomb cyclone.

It was my bad Matt, had 3 guys so there was room for 1 more.

Bart that sounds like a great trip.  I got my buddy into a single albie while we were blackfishing but I still havent caught one this season.  Maybe Sunday.

Ah my buddies slammed them same day.  If you were in a CT based boat you were not far away.  Im going to go out in the crappy weather sat and get tossed around for a bit.

The bad:

My seasons done.  Wasnt paying attention to my trackline trying to show my buddy how much further we had to go to get back.  Hit rocks hard...lower unit is done, skeg gone, prop shaft bent!  I dont think there is hull damage but we will see soon.  13 mile rode back at 8mph but its back in the slip....

If this is a habit Jonh, you might want to remember; if you get a bigger boat, they usually stick deeper into the water...

salt may be done for me and my boat. not sure when my next window will be and the tog are moving deeper and deeper each day it seems. not the easiest thing to do in a 14ft boat. may make a couple more runs for squid as I hear the catching has been good. the chu and stocked trout are keeping me busy though

I've taken that boat on 40miles round trips before. that boat I can positively say has been around the entire coast of Massachusetts and parts of ri. furthest offshore was probably 7 miles from the coast. I don't really do much offshore but cover a lot of ground inshore. so fuel efficient I get around 7 miles to the gallon

Its been a good season.  My 19' is almost ready to fly again.  Only a couple of hours of break in left and a gear oil change should be good to go.  Will be chasing pike/lakers until ice up.

We can, might explore some Friday.  Every year I try a bit early and they are still spawning...
