Kodiak Island In July
« on: Mar 02, 2007, 03:56 PM »
Planning a trip to Kodiak this July.  Can anyone give me advice on what to expect as far as fishing goes.  This will be our first trip and want to experience as much as possible.  Our main focus will be on fishing and our time will be split between fresh and salt water.  What can we expect in the salt water?  What fish will be in the streams? Based on our limited understanding, we will be fishing for Halibut and silvers in the salt and chums and sockeye in the streams?  Is the rainbow fishing any good? Thanks for your help.

Schleede are you taking a guided trip or do-it-yourself?

The salt water is a no brainer, and will be easily figured out...  Halibut are relitively easy to catch and you should score well in Kodiak.  Sea bass and ling cod are a kick in the pants and you should fish them with standard salmon gear/heavy jigs.

Fresh water is accessable right around town, and out of town...  You can fly fish the lakes, and  the rivers.  The dollies are pretty aggressive as well.  Egg sucking leech patterns, and most basic drys work well.

Lures to stock up on are Alaskan favorites like #5 silver Vibrax with green, orange, pink, and yellow bells, silver pixies in 3/8, 1/2 oz. and 3/4 for long casts in pink, orange, and green inserts, black maribou jigs in steelhead sizes, 1/0 red gamagatsu hooks for reds, slinky sinkers, etc...

Leave the sidearm at home and carry a sharp knife! ;D
