Use a small circle hook, then do not set the hook in the traditional manner, just start to reel in when the line moves.

I use long shanked light wire hooks  with a real wide bend and the barbs pinched off, i found light wire offset bass hooks work quite well. Wider bend keeps them from swallowing them to to deep, still can hook them easily since they have quite a big mouth, and the long shanks and barbless help you pop them out easier when the do swallow it, and as a last resort you can cut the hook off and push it back out or hope that it works its way out.

All great tips but I fish for Channels and catch the bulls. A small circle hook is probably the way to go. Thanks guys!

Not really a nuisance, I hate to keep a fish just to get my hook back, I am talking DOZENS a nite. I do eat them and they are good.
