Chumming for perch
« on: Oct 09, 2021, 03:56 AM »
Yesterday on Erie the boat next to us was slamming the perch while we were just getting them occasionally. He let us come up closer to around 30í and we still were not doing as well.  He told us he was cutting shiners up in pieces and chumming and that, he said, was the difference.  I am from from the coast and am quite knowledgeable about salt water chumming during my charter years there  - but freshwater?
I just donít think that small pieces of shiners would settle right under your boat in 64í in Erie. Eventually, his luck ran out and us and other boats near bye slammed them.
What do you guys think. Luck, or did it really help him?

I think he was wasting his money!!!
This spring when I was out there I had had the same thing happen.   One boat was slaying them... one after another..boats around him were picking away at them..(he wasnt chumming) he boxed out and we slid closer to where he was(3 other boats) our bite picked up.    I think for whatever reason mustce been a really small TIGHT POD of fish and he was right on top of them. LUCK

i been chumming for years. perch are scavengers too.  they also roam constantly.  if you can get on some and chum a bit they seem to stay under you.  so yes it works.  it has drawbacks too though.  if you chum a bunch, sooner or later the cats will find you and then its over.  they will run the perch off.  this works  under the ice too.  i been preaching it on the shanty for years.

i do agree with john on him wasting money though.  i freeze blended fish scraps in 2 litter bottles.  tie it to your anchor below the perch caller, poke holes all over it and send it down.  people are very reluctant to chum for some reason.  i have been telling friends for years about chumming and or drop lights at night and they still doing the same old thing since 1987. lol  some even still start motor and rev it up when bite slows.  remember those days? :D

When I fish the river if there is a hole I KNOW fish are in.. if the bite slows or isnt there I'll take the motor into the brush or drive slow up and down the hole in tight to where the lumber is...
This pushes fish out of hiding  and easier to get a bait in front of them
It WORKS GREAT sometimes
People think I'm nuts!!!!!

I just wonder about 64í deep water yesterday.  Maybe shallower.  Maybe Iíll freeze a block of leftover minnows and tie it to a weight and let it down.  My luck, Iíll snag it constantly

I know a guy who gets his perch bait in bulk for cheap and hes been known to drop a handful of minnows on the ice and step on em, twisting his boot back and forth a little and then kick them down the hole.

I don't know how helpful it is, and i doubt he would do it if he was paying full retail for the bait.

Old timers around here would put fish carcasses in an onion bag, sink it thru the ice. They would then shake the insects out and fish over it. Worked for days.

I chum all winter long. I also dip my lure and bait in a secret oil. It can't be found in any grocery store.

ill give you another reason to chum.  this ones funny.

had a guy PM me on a fishing site.  he wondered if i could take him and his kid out to catch some of the hog crappie i was posting pics of.  most times id say no back then but but he seemed ok (later to find out he is not) and assumed wanted to show his kid how its done now i dont take people.  anyhow i said sure meet me there.  we he had his kid but he wasnt a kid.  20 some years old.  so 2 grown men couldnt find fish for themselves and looked to hustle mine.  so i led them down to a spot away from my normal area.  sure didnt want them on my spot with friends next time up there.  i caught a couple nice crappie and bounced them off their fancy shack full of gear to ooooandaahh over.  then i got my gill rod out and started catching tip up baits.  i took 6 or 7 over to a hole outside their shack and smashed them down the hole.  i knew what would happen.  this lake has a bunch of bullheads in it and it doesnt take long for them to invade.  i was laughing I disagree off at them in that shack.  they caught a bunch of them.  bitchin about the swallowed hooks the entire time. lmao  they stayed about 2 hours doing that.  now if that guy would have brought a child like he made on to, i would have showed them a bunch of nice crappie.  im not a free fish locator for no talent looser deadbeats. lol  take your live scope and find your own.  you dont need skills for that. ;D

so if guys invade your area chum heavy and pray for bullheads. lol
