Anyone seeing fiddleheads yet?
« on: Apr 24, 2020, 02:41 PM »
If so, where (i.e., what town)?

They generally come a bit later where I live than down in the Pioneer Valley, but the length of time they're at their peak is so short it's practically over before you can blink, so I would be grateful for a "heads up" so as to "be on the lookout" for them.

PM incoming.  It's a little ride for you but you could parlay it into some fishing.

I got them 4 days ago around the ct river but they were opening up. I think they are done there now sadly.

I was doing yard work yesterday and look what I stumbled upon. Not the mother load but there’s a few bunches right in my back woods.

Jim if they look like this in Southwick. That area I told you to check should be popping now or very soon.

TBH I’ve never actually harvested them so I’m not sure when it’s ideal to pick them.

I spotted "the first fiddlehead of spring" in my neck of the woods today.

So, based on past experience, the "harvest" should last the next few days.

wrong kind of fiddlehead to eat but that's the right stage to pick them.

Those are NOT the right ones either...look at the picture with the bowl in it. See the brown stuff? It’s like tissue paper and will be on the fiddlehead. If it is fuzzy with hairs it is NOT the right one. The correct ones will also have a u-shaped stem.

Well Jim guess it’s not a honey hole. Do the two different types typically grow in the same area?  Didn’t know the brown papery material was the real indicator.

I haven't found them in the same area. it's weird finding the right ones. I found mine by the ct river and I hear they like the bigger river areas. the Housitonic might have some along with the Westfield.
