Deepwater jigging for pike
« on: Apr 09, 2004, 11:38 PM »
I have had interestingly good results on deep-water jigging sassy shads for pike (about 20 ft deep.) although I'm sure there is a better jig out there for them. Can someone tell me what kind of jigs they use for pike?

My two favs are the Northland Whistler & the Airplane jigs, both in glow.
A 4" buzzbomb is wicked action too.

I have heard that the airplane jigs work great as well.

My favorite pike lure is a 3/8 oz. or 5/16 oz. black bucktail jig with a black ripple rind strip on it... That's more or less a standard lure in Seneca lake, one of NY's Finger lakes... I use a short length of 30 lb. test mono as a shock leader, and check it often, changing it if it is nicked by thier teeth..

What color BuzzBomb do you use?

6 inch curly tail grub in white. Have to look in the saltwater section for this size. Jig head is either red or orange.  Weight depends upon conditions, cold front use lighter size for a slower sink.

1/4 oz chartruse(sp?) head with a chartruse/flake twister tail. I have lost a lot of them walleye fishing (tug, snap), also finally landed a 22lb pike with one. You might want a heavier leader though, 8lb mono is a good way to get practice tying knots.
If I were going to try jigging for them, which sounds like a blast. I would use a jigging spoon with a lot of flash.

I use a 3/8 perch colored bucktail with a chartreuse grub about 3" long hanging just behind the end of the hair on the jig. Works great!

I've never really went after pike by specifically jigging for them. I typically just catch a few while jigging for walleye. I usually just throw spoons and other flashy lures at them and reel them in. I might just try jiggin'
