Title: Anybody have Wave Wackers or a similar brand on their boats?
Post by: taxid on Sep 09, 2020, 07:02 PM
As I wind down my fish taxidermy business possibly retiring, and make more time for fishing again, I can remember getting lots of fish back trolling (deadly on other fish besides walleyes). Back then could only back troll on relatively calm waters 'cause I didn't have back trolling plates to keep out the slop. Once the speedboaters cranked up forget it with just an unprotected transom. I'm getting a new boat cover made so thought I might go ahead an order a couple and install the mounts even though I think the plates are detachable?

Are really kicker for vertical jigging as the back is where you transducer usually is.

I see I could make these and even make them detachable but not sure if I could find plexiglass slanted like that.

Bend it.
Use a heat gun and go slow.
Guys make new lexan cuddy hatches and bend them all the time.
Up to 1/4”
Do a search on you tube for bending lexan sheets.
Good luck!

I do have a heat gun. I'll have to check that out! Thanks Mac!

That looks easy Mac!

The wife says the price of Lexan has gone up due to demand for shielding for Covid-19 protection. She works at a school where they have to buy it for protection.

I think a thick black rubber floor matting material would work fine for the motor sides. Only thing now is how to make the bottom bracket where the lexan sides into. I'd like to be able to remove it. I'm sure I can figure out something. Probably two pieces of aluminum or sheet metal stock either screwed or welded together.

Just ordered what I need off of Ebay for $89.70 including Sales Tax and shipping is free. Turns out it will be shipped from a city about an hour and half from me in the same state.  Will be a lot cheaper than buying a commercial one and I enjoy DIY projects. Thanks Mac.

I can show the steps in making the entire thing with the materials I used and where to get them if anyone is interested.

Looks like this aluminum material could do the job for the bottom slot to hold the 1/4 inch Lexa for easy removal. It has a 1/4 inch channel. Would prefer it be deeper but since here are two more attachment points higher up (wing nuts and rubber washers) perhaps it's enough? Thoughts?

Just curious because I've never done it or really looked into it but what does back trolling do for you that forward trolling doesn't?

Better boat control.
It was created many years ago before the bow mount electric trolling motor was around, or people had them.
Sitting back in a tiller boat and back trolling allows you move very slow and move side to side in small increments when working a jig or using a slow presentation with a bottom bouncer or live bait setup.
I feel the bow mount electrics today give you the same thing, but many guys still back troll.

And you are right on top of your transducer so you can turn on a dime to follow a particular contour line.

Yea, spot lock is for sitting in one place.

Wave whackers are for slowly and precisely moving thru an area or around and thru structure when presenting your bait in a slow precise manner is required.

I'd say I do that with my trolling motor just moving forward trolling sewn smelt or even live bait at less than 1 mph. I never personally understood back trolling and why it's preferred in some instances but then again I've never caught a walleye in my life.

Like I said in an earlier post Geoff, I believe it started before decent bow mount trolling motors were around.
It goes back into the early 60's but I think maybe even back into the late 50's.
I agree with you that a good bow mount will allow you to do the same thing.
And if you have I-Link, it will automatically follow a contour.
Or retrace a previous path.
Etc.

But how tight to a contour line can you stay with bow mount motor with your line behind you? Say you want to follow exactly a 20 foot break that shifts rapidly back and forth. I challenge you do that with a bow mount motor. Sure you can do it if you're standing in the front of the boat but not as precisely. Or am I wrong?

Well there are lots of different ways to present your baits , whether it be trolling or jigging , Pitching etc , More techniques you know the more well rounded you are , just my opinion

Chart plotter + I pilot and you can creep forward at .1 all along the 20’, 30’, etc line.

And I feel that someone backttolling nights be lucky to get this accurate.   If they paid attention 100% of the time, which never happens.

I can record a track along that 20ft contour with accuracy and then make the boat run that track all day while I watch my prey on panoptix mounted on the head of the ipilot. Its amazing.  I use my remote 90% of the time.  If I'm being lazy I won't follow a contour ill hit autopilot, set cruise speed and let the unit do all the work.  I like that it'll adjust the power with the wind speed and I'm hands free all the time.  No tiller work.

Yes sir Ive used them ,

Mac been using a terova for 11 years  , mine doesn’t have the capability to lock on the contour line and follow but then again it’s not that important for walleye fishing here 😉
Far as wave hackers , Oneida when it’s rough  holds back a lot of water
I have a back troller just prefer other methods

That's awesome. Can't wait to install mine and get out there again. Probably won't be until next year though.  :(. But sacrificing now and getting all my work done and out the door will be worth it for next year. Hopefully we will be done with this d**n virus. I want to make a trip to Canada next year.

Just some of them mounted up and ready for finish work. (Couldn't get them all in the frame).

I'd say I can do it pretty accurately. I use the downriggers when I want to do that so I can turn real quick and the lines are fairly close to the boat. Even if I'm fishing 5 feet down I'll use the riggers sometimes. Here is an instance that required precision trolling... this is Asizcohos Lake in Western Maine. I camped there a while back and if you see on this map, it's a river basin that was flooded. The lake is fairly shallow except in the river channel and the water was down a good 10 feet from normal due to our drought in the northeast. I wanted to try trolling right in that deepwater, so I used the chart along with my sonar and was able to stay right where I wanted, trolling slowly.

Absolutely DYING to get Panoptix. It's why I went with a non-side scanning unit for my current headunit. Budget was kinda blown with the Ulterra purchase but next year I WILL be getting Panoptix and then look out!

You need I-Pilot Link to do this and I "think" it needs to be connected to a Humminbird device to do this.
You plot the course on your recorder and then the motor will follow the course.

The basic I-Pilot (without Link) will remember a course that you run and then run back over the course in either direction.
But you need to run it manually and push some buttons before and after running the course to save it to memory in the motor.

(I think this is correct anyway)

But spot lock is for sitting still in one location.
I love spot lock for perch fishing in Erie.
Hold us WAY closer to the spot than any anchor can because of all of the rode out when using an anchor and swing that results.

Yes Mac I can record and and play back but fish don’t always sit still so always running the same track doesn’t always produce

Yes to do it automatically you do need link and you do need a hummingbird unit.  However if you use the track record on ipilot while you manually track on a contour you only need to manually stay on that contour 1x, which isn't overly difficult.

Geoff its worth the investment.

Yes Jon I can do that and I have lowrances on board ,
I find on Oneida as much as the eyes move when trolling , recording isn’t all that productive , I can turn and lay on the same gps line if I wish

I get it, but sometimes it's great to be able to go thru that school a 2nd time.
(or so I'm told)

Me, I really don't typically do this out on Lake Erie.
By the time we get the fish in, and say, "maybe we should go thru there again.", we are 1/2 mile plus past the area.
Then it would take a long time to slowly turn around, because we have 6-9 rods out, and then finally get back to the place.
Might be an hour later.  lol
So your comment holds merit.
We typically continue on looking for more fish elsewhere.

Yes sir long lines take a long time to turn , like salmon fishing Ontario with 400’ of copper out on a board  or long lines off dipseys
There are spots much tighter than this 19’ difference in 134’ ,
I only run 4 rods anyway , and my lines are pretty short So it doesn’t take all day to pick my line back up , plus I mark the spots I hit fish , like I said I spend most of the time jigging anyway which is more productive at least for guys I know , and Oneida 40’ is deep 😉
