The open water season so far in Aitkin County,Mn.
« on: May 13, 2009, 09:59 AM »
Hey guys ,just stopping by to share on what's happening up here in northern Mn. where we have had about 3 weeks of open water.
I started fishing 4 days after the ice went out with water temps around 40 degrees. It's up to about 55 now and the slabs/gills are being caught with small hair jigs that are 64th - 80th oz.
They are being found in 8 foot or shallower.
Here's my Dad on his 1st outting last night with his 1st slab of the season.

We caught near 200 last night.

The gills are starting to show up too.

All you guys know Baron Von Crappie...ie MT.

Here's Moosehead with a nicer male.

like I said the gills are starting to move in and so are the seeds.

We did take a break for Mooseheads kids to do some sucker/walleye fishing.
We hooked a few new fishers I'm thinking.

Last I heard the 1 tyke wants to take me to school for show and tell.
LOL
A family friend that I work with at the local radio stion was out for a day.
He was like a kid in a penny candy story with a C-note in his pocket.

Those males are turning black...

I did take a break from ice fishing for some steelheads and smallies.

but back to the crappies.

Here's mark 10 days after ice out.We started the day with a 49 degree water temp and the air was 38 degrees.

Not a fish was caught on meat.No minnows or worms.
Light little bobbers 2-4 test lines and my jig were used with every fish shown in this post.

It's been a great season so far.
I bet I've seen better than 1000 crappies caught not to mention a bunch of bass, gills, perch, pike, walleyes and suckers.
I'm hoping y'all have a great season this year.

Welcome back Keith! You brought pics back to prove it as usual! ;)

I never saw you over on the Iceshanty last winter, how was your ice season?

I guess I got banned for talking about T.H.E. Jig over there.
I've learned my lesson.
I reserve most of that for forums that I'll sponsor or on my forum.

I had 132 guys on the ice last year. We had a gas!
here's a few pics.
I have 32 pages in my photobucket from this winter.

Here's an early ice video.
We caught a bunch of these quality fish back then.
