what ever works for you I carry A OLD SET OF TOOLS AND A FEW HOOKS AND MATERIAL IN THE  JEEP JUST IN CASE I HAVE TO MATCH SOMETHING ,I'VE  TIED ON PICNIC TABLES FIRE GRILLS AND MY HOOD BEFORE LOL

Can't tell you how many flies I've tied back when I was working...... on lunchbreaks of course , with my old Thompson C-Clamped to the steering wheel of the truck and also on my cars steering wheel streamside on fishing trips.....no wind to deal with and lot's of good tunes to make tying a pleasure regardless of weather.

I can tell this story now because my brother is retired but he used to repair gauges and instruments in a dust proof controlled room that locked only from the inside. When there wasn't gauges and such to work on he was known to tie flys clean fish etc. His boss told him he didn't care what he did as long as he did his job when they needed him to.

Can't saw I've ever tied anywhere but on a bench of one sort or other. I fill my vest or boat and go. For expedition fishing I have a big fish pond back pack with a chest style tackle bag. That's for the long hikes in.
